3DS XL First Impressions/Previews

I wouldn't argue it, but I imagine some may feel there's a lot more they like on the Vita right now than on the 3DS up to this point.
Well, the problem is that there's practically nothing much on Vita; specially when you exclude ports of games which are already present in a superior version on consoles.

But I admit 3DS is still a Nintendo console, and won't match the taste of some people; so I understand your point, subjectively.

Well, I was thinking of ports too, though even the 3DS can be blunted there somewhat given Ocarina of Time, Star Fox 64, and Tales of the Abyss, going further if you include updated ones like Cave Story 3D and Metal Gear Solid 3D.

I honestly feel that Vita's performance so far has been so bad that calling it a 3DS competitor is giving it undue credit. And I'm saying that as a Vita owner that actually likes the thing.

Has the camera quality in the 3DSXL been confirmed anywhere, or is this just speculation that the camera isn't changed because Nintendo didn't say it changed?

Was expected, plus on the specs they gave out:

I agree; specially in the last year and early months, 3DS was almost a port machine too.

I don't care about the resolution, but the image quality seems like crap, which is a big waste considering how it is practically the only mainstream device capable of 3D;
was the DSi XL camera any better than the DSi one?

Kidding.

Uhh...are you actually suggesting that the 3DS had as good of a software library four months in as Vita does? Because that's objectively false if you look at the ratings. Vita has a fantastic library. 3DS over a year in also has a fantastic library, but it was terrible at first.

The way it's worded makes it sound like it's a full 800x480 when in 2D mode. I highly doubt that's true, but it would be pretty cool.

Same, 640 x 480 (2 cameras -1 in front, 1 inside-).
3DS is the same resolution but has an extra camera (2 in front, 1 inside)

So what's the deal with the 2nd analog add-on?

Since it only has one, thats it? is going to be unsupported then?

Honest question, I though this thing was going to have it built-in, just like the GBASP had backlite and a rechargeable battery

Nah, he meant Vita now versus 3DS now, Vita now versus 3DS at the same point in its life is a complete joke, at best you could make the case OoT trumped anything the Vita had... and man, Vita at least has more variety in good stuff to play than the 3DS did then.

Not that I think Vita has a better lineup than the 3DS, but I think there are several examples that are better than those.

So 3DS XL looks pretty spiffy. Looks like it will be good for longer play sessions without hand cramping due to the relatively small size of the original model.

I think I'll be getting the red one unless holding out for a special edition takes my fancy.

Is the volume for anyone else much louder with a DS game in the 3DS than with 3DS titles? I wish I could get the 3DS games to match my DS games' volume. Purple 3DS, if that matters.

That's not what objectivity means.

If it helps, toy around the settings and change between Stereo, Surround or Mono. Some found improvements and louder volume with it set to "Stereo"...or something like that. :p

I own a Vita and absolutely love it, but you definitely just listed some seriously mediocre games. The fact is that in a year if someone asked you what the best games on the Vita are, probably none or very few of these would make the list.

The 3DS, on the other hand, has Mario 3D Land, OoT, Mario Kart, Star Fox, and Kid Icarus, which are all games that will have lasting sales on the system. That's not even touching on the huge number of games coming out by the end of the year, which you've mentioned for Vita.

Don't get me wrong, I loooove my Vita. But it really is a software ghost town right now, and it honestly doesn't look nearly as promising as the 3DS does at the moment.

Me too. The 3DS speakers are kind of not that great. Headphones make all the difference. DS software won't blow the speakers like 3DS software would I guess.

Damn... I didn't think it would happen so soon but I'm getting sold on the XL. It sounds awesome. I'll wait for some better colors or a price drop.

Hmmmmmm.

I see what you did there, Nintendo.

Dont really care for better speakers.

I use headphones.
It's nice to have them when I want to take headphones off, but it's why it's a complete non-issue: to get GREAT sound out of those you're going to need to use headphones or external speakers anyway.

I want one, but I'll wait for better colors/themes unless gamestop does some kind of trade-in deal where I can save a good amount of quid if I do it early, like they had with the DS trade-ins when 3DS came out.

Is it possible to do the system transfer on a 3DS, take out the memory card, sell the 3DS, buy a new 3DS, pop it in the new 3DS, and wham?

The current 3DS library is easily as bad as the Vita's if not arguably worse, the difference is the 3DS actually has upcoming games and a life ahead of it. =/

I can't think anything on the Vita that's upcoming that I really want besides Ys, sadly.
