3DS XL First Impressions/Previews

That's funny how people skip a lot of games on 3DS, but are more cool with the Vita.
Mario Kart, Zelda, SML ?
Where are Resident Evil ? Dead or Alive ? Shinobi ? Kid Icarus ? Rhythm Thief ? Star Fox ? Cave Story 3D ? Super Street Fighter IV ?

So what don't you understand about personal preference? Because I'm willing to explain it to you.

PSP's is in roughly the same place and that hasn't seriously bugged me, but I do think in the middle is least obtrusive.

costs, risk, demographics, relevance.

the reason you haven't seen stories like the PSN hack and XBL account stealing on Nintendo systems is because they are rendered irrelevant without accounts to hack. Nintendo need to devise an idiot-proof system because their demographic is likely the least tech-savvy of all the gaming demographics currently.

this drives me nuts, though. i don't think anything about user accounts is particularly difficult, but knowing that my eshop games likely cant be recovered if my system is lost or destroyed feels ridiculous at this point. worse still if they wanna start pushing full retail games there.

too bad the headphone socket is in the worst place EVER.
and THAT changes everything. dealbreaker, for fucks sake

wait, is side worse than center for you?

come on now, not a month goes by without news of some account-based website or service being hacked. PSN hack was enormous news and the XBL phishing/FIFA gold thing is an ongoing issue.

Account holder validation a very difficult problem. Nintendo can't even depend on people having e-mail access because they're not selling a computer-based service. Hence why they said they are looking to partner with someone with experience in this area.

I'm glad the headphones are on the side now. It being in the center looked so odd to me.
Looking odd >>> getting in the way of my hands (potentially).

... Admittedly the system's so big I'm not sure that'd be a serious issue, but avoiding something very practical "because it looks silly" is frustrating, especially when it's very superficial.

Eh, doesn't look like it will get in the way to me. My hands usually don't go under the system while playing it, so yeah.

the email thing - that's gotta be a given in this day & age. and i get what you're saying about hacks, but given nintendo's full-steam-ahead efforts with full retail titles on DD, DLC and other things they're amping up for, i really don't see this as a huge stretch.

i mean, yeah, those compromises absolutely do happen, especially if you're not properly setup, but which do you think is more likely: a huge, costly compromise or consumers like myself holding off on your DD offerings until a proper account system is established? perhaps i'm biased on this, but the latter feels larger.

ok ok.... I´m getting it day one..

I just hope that one day the put the entire Wii VC catalogue on the 3DS VC.

Well, the problem is that there's practically nothing much on Vita; specially when you exclude ports of games which are already present in a superior version on consoles.

But I admit 3DS is still a Nintendo console, and won't match the taste of some people; so I understand your point, subjectively.
Which ports are these?

somewhere in their planning department they will have opportunity cost graphs and risk assessments on this exact thing. It looks like the lines cross when the Wii U launches.

Glad I sold the my original 3DS for a Vita. Not really upset over the lack of circlepad-pro.
I'll most definitely be picking this up.

Has Nintendo made mention of 3D movies on eShop, and I don't mean little quirky films by OkGo, but actual box office films like John Carter and The Immortals?

I've started commuting to places more often, and I want to get back into handheld gaming having missed the DS era more or less completely, so this is super appealing.

The only issue is I can get the 3DS for £120 here in the UK, and the XL version will probably cost substantially more. That and money is limited and I am also considering picking up a new monitor, which I've meaning to do for months now.

Decisions...

I have no idea why this didn't occur to me sooner. As an Australian, I was a bit bummed we got it a month after UK.

....I can just import from UK! My wait just got -30 days. Awesome.

EDIT: actually postage from UK to Aus is usually like 3 weeks lol. Ah well.

i was gonna say that they're slow as balls to release stuff on the eshop these days, but i think it's easier to keep that stuff on the Wii/WU end rather than have customers fussing when they realize they have to buy the same game 2x across the platforms.

Even though I haven't used my 3DS for any length of time in months, and most of my games sit there unfinished, I'm sold on this. Maybe I will finally get around to playing my 3DS backlog on this thing.

I would think that they would embrace every opportunity to sell me the same game over and over again.

AND I WOULD BUY.

3DS XL seems like the perfect device to replay all my NES and SNES favourites.

The transfer is just for the licensed software locked to your old system.

you need both systems present to do the system transfer.

see here: http://www.nintendo.com/consumer/systems/3ds/en_na/ht_system.jsp

But... then how can I trade it in at Gamestop without losing my licensed software? If I sell it now then I cannot do that, right? I need the system to do the transfer, meaning that only keeping the SD card won't work?

Edit: I should clarify: There is a trade in program going on where you trade in the 3DS, pay 99,90 Euros and get the 3DS XL. So I need to wait till the system launches and then do the software transfer in the store.

You cant. Gamestop may let you use their wifi, perhaps, maybe not. Its really quite shitty.
So the only thing I can do is backup the files that are on the SD card to my PC, wait for launch day and hope that they will let me use their wifi. Gonna talk to them today then, thx!

yeah, fair call - id prolly buy a few again too, is the worst part.
changing my answer to "lol it's nintendo"

Sorry..haven't had a chance to read through everything: do we know if the XL is going to have a charging cradle? I love that thing.

This. There is no reason why we can't play SNES/Genesis games on a portable. The PSP had all those compilations.

Hmm, I wonder how much Gamestop will offer for the original 3DS when their inevitable trade-in program starts? Right now they're only giving $70 for one. I don't think I'd bite unless I could get at least $100.

No idea what you'd get for it if you weren't buying anything but it looks like they'll give you $60 if you're trading it in towards a 3DS. So maybe $100 for a 3DS going towards a 3DS XL isn't too unreasonable?

they might do something like that (doubtful that high though), they usually do hardware->hardware trade in deals.

Well my local Block Buster are offering £70 trade-in for my 3DS, still undecided atm, I wouldn't really want to add much more than £100 to that for the 3DS XL.

I'd think it depends on if the MSRP of the 3DS changes when the XL drops. But I could see them pulling something like - Trade in your 3DS and pay just 99.99 for an XL! blah blah

Which I guess I'd be ok with it

Was going to wait for a sexy Black Friday model like last year's Zelda 3ds, but this thread has changed my minds. I gotta get it now.
