3DS XL First Impressions/Previews

I'd think it depends on if the MSRP of the 3DS changes when the XL drops. But I could see them pulling something like - Trade in your 3DS and pay just 99.99 for an XL! blah blah

Which I guess I'd be ok with it
I was kind of assuming that the MSRP of the 3DS wouldn't change since the XL is already more expensive. I guess it isn't safe to assume something like that but it seems logical to me.

But yeah, there will definitely be some type of trade-in program that involves trading your old 3DS for an XL. It's inevitable. As long as I can do it without spending more than $100 I think I'll be pretty satisfied.

Yeah, I think it's safe to bet there wont be a price drop.

I'll say this about the NoA color choices: if you block the pictures so you can only see one color at a time, it looks a LOT better. It's when you view both at the same time that they clash like a mofu and accentuate the garishness of both. I'm actually don't mind the blue or red now... so long as I can only see one of the colors at a time.

The current 3DS library is easily as bad as the Vita's if not arguably worse, the difference is the 3DS actually has upcoming games and a life ahead of it. =/

I can't think anything on the Vita that's upcoming that I really want besides Ys, sadly.

Where's the lol emiticon when you need it.

No my friend, just no.

Depends on color and condition. Black and/or blue are worth about 49 at Amazon as a trade-in. Pink is 75, which is more than they give for a DSi XL. I bet Gamestop has one flat rate regardless of color.

$49 at Amazon sounds pretty good, although I realize I made an unfortunate typo in my last post because I just have a gold Zelda DS Lite that I will want to get rid of, not a DSi.

So it's $15 to $30 at Amazon.

Haven't seen a cradle for the XL, did I miss an announcement?

Here's the UK boxart:

A cradle/charger pack is being sold seperately in the UK/JP. Not a clue about the USA though - I'd seriously doubt it, considering the USA units will have an AC Adapter in the box whereas we won't.

No, People who act like their tastes have any bearing on a games quality.

Dismissing a lineup of games as mediocre because you don't like them is just outright ridiculous.

Not sure if you mean me, but considering you addressed me initally: It's just my opinion, guy, it's not some fact I'm trying to pass off. I'm not dismissing anything because I don't care enough to get riled up about stupid shit like this. I bought the machine for the Nintendo games and niche Japanese games it's going to get and considering I mostly seem to play B-tier games, I explore the depths of these platforms pretty deeply and that's just what I come up with. The funny thing is I don't have a Vita, nor do I plan to buy one, I just think that both platforms have a really iffy lineup right now. For my tastes, there's a few good, big name games on the 3DS with a few decent strays and a slightly larger list of good B-tier titles on the Vita and neither of which has had any decent software in the US in months except for Gravity Rush which is like the singular major original Vita title, anyhow.

That's my current reading of things and honestly...if you can't cope with that, then tough shit, really. I didn't want this to become some thing, it's totally not the right thread for it. I was just making a one off response to one fellow. If I didn't like the platform, I wouldn't own one and I wouldn't be wanting to buy the XL, as well.

The actual important thing for me concerning the library 3DS is that I think it'll be in a much better place by the end of the year and I plan to double the amount of games I own, at least, but yes for now I think it's been pinned down by it's early rockiness and the fact that it's still a fairly new machine. I just really hope Etrian Odyssey 4 gets announced shortly for localization. That's really my current number one want.

Was expected, plus on the specs they gave out:

Do you have a link to that? Haven't seen any release of official specs of the 3DSXL, and there's nothing mentioned in that excerpt that would indicate it is the 3DSXL. Just want to be sure. :(

Edit:
Found links to some websites, but the official specs on Nintendo's site don't call out the camera specifically. It does say that for other specs, see the original 3DS spec sheet, so that's a good sign that it didn't change. :(

The cradle is not packed-in in all regions? Or the NoA one comes with it?

Like my post right above yours states, it's seperately sold in the UK/EU and JP, and there's no indication at all of whether it'll be available in the USA in any form.

I would imagine the AC adapter is standard in the US with an optional cradle. If they're trying to get out of low profit margins on the current hardware then doing it through additional accessories like this is probably a decent help.

I'm extremely happy with the impressions, I admit I was concerned initially about how the bigger screen might affect the 3D effect or how comfortable it would be to hold. I'll still try before I buy but this puts a lot of my fears to rest. Roll on next month!

Thanks. It really seems to me the UK/JP market got the better deal. Better colors and the option of buying the cradle. smh at NoA.

Ugly colors. Give me non baby colors and I'll bite.

It's not really the colors that bug me, moreso the implementation of them. It just looks... cheap. I mean I have an Aqua 3DS and I still kind of want that purple one (I like purple, leave me alone), but those were decently laid out.

I really wish they would at least put the white one out here, though. Ideally I'd like to see the original DSi XL colors return, because I really adored Bronze, but that's probably never going to happen again.

Yeah I saw that after I posted, sorry! Well I'm waiting to see the NA colors in some hands on or so, before I comment on them. But I kinda liked the blue one!

Yeah I want my sister to trade her pink DSi...however stupid Amazon unlikely to carry 3DS XL. I don't want to pay tax or pay Gamestop.

If I lived in the UK or Japan I don't think I'll even think about it in those terms. Just like for everything else, It'll be just something I'll accept as part of living there.

£180 is hard to accept, and I've been living here my entire life. It's a ridiculous price, especially with no AC adapter included.

Thankfully, some sites are as low as £167 now. Much better.

Wait till the supermarkets get involved, the prices will drop again.

Tesco is already involved via their entertainment website, and it's at £179.97.

But yes, once the supermarkets start listing it in-store and on their main "direct" websites, it will surely drop.

If there is no charger in the box, can the XL be charged with a regular microUSB cable like most cellphones?

No. Same port as on the DSi/3DS. I've got a DSi/3DS to USB charging cable that I brought from Amazon for £1.49. Works fine - can charge from my PC, Wii or wall socket with a phone adapter.

That sucks, I was thinking of getting one, but I don't support abusive tactics like that one, buying a console I will only be able to use for a few hours until I have to charge it. And being forced into buying an "accesory" should be ilegal.

Will get a Vita instead.

I wish more people had this mindset. The people with the whole "I can just go on Amazon and buy the accessory that should have been standard in the first place!" attitude are just begging to be nickel and dimed in the future.

Does supermarket mean something different in the UK? In the US it means grocery store which Walmart isn't really.

Eh, I tend to think of Supermarket as retail stores with a full grocery section. That's the difference between Target and Super Target at least. Normal targets still have a modest grocery section.

I'm from Texas too. At some point, all Walmart switched to being Super Walmarts aside from those ones with the green sign which are pure grocery stores.

Buying a 3DS XL and a charger will still be cheaper than buying a Vita.

Not to mention 3ds XL comes with a 4GB memory storage whereas you have to purchase it separately for Vita.....

but luckily i live in the greatest country in the world because we get chargers.

Supermarket is a grocery store at heart, but they've expanded strongly into clothing, electronics, and entertainment.

Interestingly I know Sainsburys do a a games chart which combines 3DS/DS in their store (as well as normal ones for both) - so hopefully Supermarkets push the XL as its obvious their gaming sections are in need of a boost just from what we know of general sales. 3DS hardware is the only hardware I see really being pushed now anyways.

A 'supermarket' in the UK is essentially what Walmart is. Tesco, ASDA, Sainsburys etc are essentially shittingly massive grocery stores fused with electronics, games, home furnishing and kitchenware, clothes and computers. Used to be just grocery, but now branched out into absolutely everything.

For a sense of scale, this is a Tesco Extra:

My local one (not that one) has three floors. It's a fucking monster. Also, Tesco is open 24 hours a day, every day apart from Sunday and Monday - which means, considering games launch on Fridays here, it's awesome for getting shit at midnight.

Thankfully the Vita doesn't force you to buy an accessory like the memory card, oh wait...

Loving the sizes of the screens. I'll try this in-store somewhere, and consider it if the 3D effect is improved. I didn't care for it much on the 3DS when I tried it previously.
