by the way, am i missing something about ambassador games? i've transferred them between two 3DSes before with no problem. does it say anywhere they won't transfer to the XL specifically?

They will transfer over, but obviously you need both consoles present along with an internet connection - tricky if you want to trade your current 3DS in towards an XL!

I've worked out what I'm going to do anyway. I'll be buying the XL with cash, and then transferring my current 3DS over to it. I'll then trade in my 3DS and use it to buy a good few games. yay

ah. well you could always just buy the XL and sell the 3DS separately, no? i don't think that'd ultimately make much difference in price, unless retailers elsewhere have special trade-in deals etc.

edit: yes, that second sentence you added sounds like a good plan!

Yes! Especially considering the only game I have is Ocarina of Time! I will get £80 credit trade in for the 3DS at my local store where my girlfriend works (I only brought it for £70 in the first place!), and I'll use that to buy Mario Kart, 3D Land and Revelaitons (all £24 each after staff discount), leaving a tenner left to pre-order NSMB2 for August.

Does the 3DS XL use a DSi stylus? It looks like it, but I'm not sure...

I will have to get one, but only if I can transfer all my games, most importantly, Zelda: Four Swords Anniversary. (I've read that you can transfer ambassador games.)

Probably something majority of people will be doing. In theory it sounds like a good plan to me, except it's all quiet on the trade front at the moment in Aus, especially with Game closing all of it's stores.

Still. I think I want a silver one :)

My plan, together with a friend:

  1. Order ludicrously inexpensive DSi charger online.
  2. Gather my DS Lite, my OG DS, friend's DS Lite, friends OG DS and respective chargers; we're not going to use them again anyway <-- We are here
  3. On launch day, take the 4 consoles to Game (spain), trade in + ~90€ for 3DS XL (for me)
  4. Do transfer from my OG 3DS to my new 3DS XL
  5. Sell OG 3DS to friend for 45€
  6. Wait for charger to arrive if it hasn't already
  7. Play coop NSMB2 with friend when it launches

Upgrade cost from OG 3DS to 3DS XL: 45€ + DS Lite + OG DS + 3€ charger
My friend gets my OG 3DS for: 45€ + DS Lite + OG DS
Maximum cash required at any given time: 90€

I think this works nicely.

Time to work out an elaborate plan - 15m.
Cost of the shenanigans - 300 euros.
Love of Nintendo - priceless.

Japan only =c

Loved my white DS Lite. This is a sexy looking beast. Bring it to the US damnit! ;[

Man, as a console and handheld collector that actually makes me cringe. :P When I was much younger I actually traded in some of my original hardware and, man, do I regret it. I've repurchased everything, though, but I can't bare the thought of trading away anything at this point.

Will it come with a large stylus like the DSi XL did?

Nah, don't think so. But check out my video - stylus at least feels better than the current one.

IMO, every thing in the current unit isn't that bad, but feels much more 'slippery'. Stylus too.

Every thing they've updated, I think it's been for the better.

Finally, a language I can understand.

okay its called Silver? EU has that combo

US only has Red and Blue

maybe NOA can still change this before the end of august... I might wait a few months to see if they have new colors for the Holidays

Darn, I was under the impression that US had silver as-well and that was going to be my go to color. ;-;

  1. I just bought a USB charging cable for mine last night for 3 bucks from Amazon. Not sure if that's an option for you, but it gives me much more options in the way of charging. Namely it lets me charge it while on an airplane or at other people's homes that dont own a Nintendo handheld.

I could try this "little" thing yesterday. Really nice, specially its feeling-sense of touch.

We recorded this 3DS vs XL video comparison + hands-on impressions:

Oh, and weight felt almost the same to me!

Your Mario skills are Que Mal! I love seeing the death screen messages in different languages. So far we've had yours, German, and French. If you can, can you comment on the feel of the slide pad? The german site that played with it yesterday claims it's more tactile. Did they alter the top of it? Thanks again for the link.

I prefer the top screen's black shiny look from the original 3DS otherwise everything else about the XL looks great to me. My gorilla hands and my need for decent battery life are making me lean towards the XL though :(..... oh decisions decisions

I'm not digging the silver, reminds me of that god awful original DS. If we can't get white, I'll probably go blue in the end.
