Guild Wars 2 Launch Date announced: August 28th, 2012

Oooooooh. I'm HYPE!

Conversation w boss today:
Boss: "Any particular reason you are taking that week off?"
Me: "I have something important happening that week."
Boss: "Damn it. I wanted to take some time off because a game called Guild Wars comes out that week."
Me: "No idea what that is.....sorry."

I knew my boss was cool, but no idea they were into any type of gaming.

HYPE!!!

Cold blooded.

I think they've shown some great evolution of the genre, honestly. The shift to having weapon-defined abilities is a really good idea; it streamlines things and allows people to focus on positioning and tactics more.
The main issue here is last-ability. The issue with weapon based tactics and smaller build flexibility is that it moves towards being an action game. This is great but also problematic. Only a few action games in history have depth beyond macros that people can put in the back of their minds. I explored a lot of the mechanics in the last BWE and I'm not overly impressed. It was well made and fun... But I could sense a point of diminishing returns.

This is why I stressed that GW2 will be more heavily centered on team play then its predecessor. For competitive players, I don't see the system itself being a draw as much as game modes themselves. And the game modes are currently limited and weak for sPvP. WvW is another story that has some allusion to this topic but I'd have to address that with a bit more care. But much like WvW, sPvP will be very reliant on the people around you for fun.

my semester starts the day after the head start begins. Oh well, I probably would have burned my eyes out on the game if I didn't have something to do.

Would also love to not have to deal with long queues in WvWvW.

Whu? There is no queue for WvW. It's a persistent area that if you don't come and defend, it will get taken over by those who decide to put time and effort into it. There's no queuing except for sPVP.

LMAO, that is amazing.

edit: Currently at 11/50 in HoM. I think by the time I finish EotN/War in Kryta I should have enough to easily put me to 15/50. Then a bit of grinding and I should hit 20/50 for the cool looking focus. Wee! I would love those Balthazar gauntlets at 30 points, but I dont think its feasible for me.

Cold blooded.

Haha. Maybe, but I've waited patiently (for far to long) for this (as most of us have).

Unfortunately, I believe there is a queue if the WvW maps get to congested. I believe its 500 per side? I've seen some complaints about having to wait for over an hour to get into WvW. Also seen complaints about AFKers in Stonemist taking up space for people that want to be in WvW.

**Edit:

From the Wiki:
Players who attempt to join a map that is full can queue for a space while joining one of the other maps in the meantime.

Then the more middle population servers matched up to each other will be perfect - there won't be a queue hardly on either side.

Yep, that's exactly what I was getting at. There's suggestions in the community thread that we should join one of the high pop "Sorrows" servers, I think that's a bad idea and med pop would be great. My vote is still for Gate of Madness.

Nah, you have to think long terms with MMOs.
Better to start right of with a high pop one.

It's one of those things you don't want to screw up, or we'll have to wait for server merge or pay transfer.

I don't think so - with a game like Guild Wars 2, we will always be matched up against a server that is near ours - meaning no matter the population we will have a lot of fun.

I just figure since GAF is not some raging hardcore guild like GoonSquad or something similar we would want something more our speed.

High population doesn't bother me. But selecting a server based on it having powerful guilds that will more than likely overrun folks in WvW does. If that were to happen, I would roll somewhere else, as annoying as that would be.

Beyond that, I'm open-minded.

I still think we should be part of a world that fills up the WvW every day/night for months to come.

If we join low/med, few weeks down the road we'll only have tiny skirmishes in WvW since people will be quitting or taking a break from game.

Goonsquad sure is fun to play with, though.

As much as I love the game, that's just wrong - there are Boosts of all kinds, and if a decent XP boost isn't an advantage (at least in terms of vertical progress, but since most horizontal things will probably be available at max level, it would be both), I wouldn't know what is :) Same with the instarevive thingie, that might be very relevant come high level dungeons.

And as I said in the f2p thread, I'm almost sure Arenanet will add more vital Items to the shop over time. You really can't judge that on launch day (see: Lord of the Rings F2P conversion, they had only nice-to-have-stuff in there too and recently began to rail in the first stat items and other stuff).

Just to clarify, those XP boosts only work on kills. Now with that in mind, someone did the math in BWE1 and if you wanted to use a boost from 1-80 at every possible moment that you'd need one to hit 80, you'd be spending nearly $200 and saving about 8 hours. That's not exactly an advantage and hell if you want to buy it then use gold.

Roped this in from another site:

Has this been posted already?

A 2 hour recording of a discussion between Alpha testers and Jon Peters.
Part 1: http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?zv3vxagcc27kwr3

Part 2: http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?8b79nd6cl6v4tfb

Thief -cluster bomb increase cast time, and lower projectile speed

-devourer venom imobilize reduction from 3 seconds to 2

-shadow signet increased move speed 25%, AOE blind (240 range), no longer has immobilize

-signet of agility active ability range increased to 600

-passive stat bonus on runes increased to 90 from 35, will scale from 10-90 as you level

-shadow trap range increase

-tripwire range increased, added 5sec cripple

-needle trap range increased (ae 500x100), 5-3 sec immob, poison 6sec, 30 second CD

-scorpion wire, increased projectile speed

-caltrops now has initial cripple, as well as pulse, will do 2 stacks of bleed for 3sec every second

-smoke screen duration increased from 7 to 8 seconds

General

-"the only traits in shippable state are engi." That is a direct quote, expect reworking of all other classes traits.

-The frost armor from combo fields has its timer reduced from 10 seconds to 5, will stack now though, also no plans to change fire from crappy might.

-The briefly mentioned that they had just finished re-working warrior longbow skills, bringing them in line and increasing damage was specifically mentioned.

-looking to potentialy have vuln and might operate differently in pve and pvp since there is currently a discrepancy with their power.

-they intend to nerf null field, well of power, ranger dodge trait (not sure which one)

Just so this is clear, THIS IS VERY OLD, this is from Alpha.

I wonder how much the crafting buff helps. That's the one I'm most interested in.

$200 for 8 hours (XP). Wow. And doesn't it only register PvE kills, not PvP/WvW?

Well, I take that back then. I just don't understand why people are referring to them as Alpha testers considering the game hasn't been in Alpha for nearly 7 months now.

I'm just stabbing wildly here, but didn't people refer to Rift's internal testing team as alpha testers?

Maybe that just stuck. I agree, it's dumb and needs to stop.

Holy crap this thread is moooooving now. How will I ever get back on top?

by the way I CAN SCARCELY CONTAIN MY EXCITEMENT

Discussing GW2 with a friend this morning, trying to explain why it's so good and what's different from other MMO's. He was getting excited with what I was saying so I linked him to Jira's post on mmo-champions.

Needless to say, after reading through that post, he immediately pre-purchased the game and couldn't stop talking about it after. :-)

Can you PM the link to Jiras post? I can't seem to find it.

Godlike.

Oh man I haven't touched it in like a week. Too busy trying to actually get a better job.

Hope you get one soon!

What the? Well that was....interesting.

I believe that's correct. Speaking of Rift, I had no idea that they implemented 3 realm warfare. I used to love the game, but grew tired of the Warfronts over and over. Watched ... well, attempted to watch ... how the new 3 realm wars worked. My god it looks awful. Instanced Stillmoor and beating on globe statues does not look fun at all. Sucks, because I like Scott Harsmann. He's very enthusiastic and you can tell he loves what he does. He reminds me of Colin in some ways. All I can say, is thank GOD that GW2 isn't adding a PvP stat like Valor.

My sentences are jumbled and convoluted this morning.

Oh well. /looks at percocet. Stupid pulled muscles in my back!

hey, so are there any GAF guilds out there that are large enough to help with HoM?

There is one, but your best bet is to just ask in here if you need help with something. Some of these guys are awesome (Ok, MOST of these guys are awesome) and will jump in for a bit to help some on a mission or two.

I'm excited to finally have a release date, but these next two months are going to be absolutely unbearable.

My god this. I just got Witcher 2 to play through, so hopefully that will help. And resorting back to Rollercoaster Tycoon 3 just to build rollercoasters that crash into a pit of mascots. But that will only last so long.

Disclaimer: Sorry Retro. I stole your multi-post response copyrighted idea!

Guys.

Guys guys guys. Guys.

Steam Sale.

We'll be fine!

I can assist with some GW1 if you catch me at the right time ITT or via PM. I helped a few gaffers before running a AoE smite-off monk and micro'ing a healer.

Question about warrior chain skills: Do you have to use skill 1 three times in a row to activate all the chain abilities? Also, is there a cooldown on these abilities?

1) I don't remember offhand if using other abilities resets the chain or not, but you can't get to the 3rd attack in the chain without doing the second, etc. That said, it's basically an auto attack. While in combat, you don't even need to continue pressing it, it'll go through the chain automatically. As such...

2) No.

Holy shit at the store prices:

http://www.guildwars2guru.com/topic/41380-black-lion-trading-post-items-rough-prices-in-euros/

Honestly, I didn't expect stuff to be THAT expensive. I planned to use the shop a lot, but now I'm pretty sure I won't :/

From the same thread:

Let's say I wanted to max out my account and at least once character, meaning, I want a full 8 character slots, all bag slots for one character, and all bank tabs for the account. Here is the cost in gems:

800x3=2400 gems for the character slots
600x3=1800 gems for the bag slots for one character only
600x7=4200 gems for all bank tabs for the account
------------------
total = 8400 gems
[at $.0125 per gem] that's $105

and $60 for the box + $105 = $165
Now counting in the bullshit 1$ =1Euro rule, and woo, I'm in it for roughly 210$. And that's just the relevant stuff, nothing of all the stuff I wanted to buy originally, like clothing, transmogrosnogaion stones and stuff. My Lotro lifetime sub was cheaper :(

Man. Oh, and before people start a "That's 15 $ per month, if you see it as a sub game" thing: Yeah, but in a sub game, I also get everthing else in the store for "free". Yes, I'm a bit annoyed right now, even if this probably was common knowledge up to this point, I didn't expect the pricing to be THAT harsh.
Also remember, the prices are per character, not per account.

Hey- if you're out there, I was hoping I could compel Thanasis Deitus to post his gamepad configuration for all to see in here, as I know he modified his in some ways from my original and the Xpadder one Welltall's been using. It'd be great for people to see all the different methods you can use to play the game in this most enjoyable of ways.
