3DS XL First Impressions/Previews

I've only got three transfers left on my 3DS account, so this XL had better last for a long time for myself as one more transfer will be used to set it up.

Will keep the last two for the proper successor and hope Nintendo set up a proper account system up alongside the Wii U.

There is a limit on transfers ? :lol

Wow that IGN vid has me sold on the silver colour. It's completely discreet. I may end up holding out for a white release in the West but I'd have no issue having that silver one in my collection.

I'm interested to see the blue and red in some unboxing videos now. They may end up looking a lot nicer than the official promo shots.

5. total bullshit.
This is so fucking disgusting. Nintendo needs to fucking fix this. I can imagine there being a limit (if there even has to be), but 5? There are nearly 5 revisions of the DS. Take into account that someone might break their 3DS to some degree or end up buying multiple colors and it's not totally impossible that someone uses more than 5 transfers over the 3DS generation + the transfer to the next console. It should have been 10 or 15. Hell, maybe even no limit.

FFS Nintendo. They better do a firmware update when the next revision comes out to raise the number of transfers.

EDIT: I'm sold on the Silver unit after watching that video. I'm just fucking pissed it's not coming to North America. I guess NoA doesn't want me to buy one then. Fuck you NoA. Seriously the worst branch of Nintendo.

Its almost as if Nintendo don't want people to purchase the revisions, what with the transfer limit and the inability to trade in your old console towards another in store without losing your games.

Honestly people, now your just looking at things to get mad over. 5 transfers is more than sufficient given that a LARGE majority of 3DS-owners won't ever use it. Do you honestly expect that a significant amount of people are going to buy 5-6 different 3DS systems? I don't think so. And if someone does use up all 5 transfers (most likely through their 3DS breaking) don't you think that Nintendo might make an exception for such a loyal customer? They have excellent customer service.

They have excellent customer service.

Yeah of course, just like the time when, after my Ambassador 3DS got stolen, I phoned them up asking if I could get them transferred to my second one, as they were all linked to my club Nintendo account. He was rude, said he didn't care, and then stated, after I asked to speak to a manager, that I needed to go to Japan.

Their customer service is equivalent to what you'd receive in the dodgy public toilets down town on a Friday night whilst wearing a nice watch.

Good luck with them letting you connect to their WiFi.

In other words, you're out of luck.
If he has a 3G device like an iPhone, he could create a personal hotspot to connect to.

In my opinion, the system transfer should be to be done without both systems present... I'm not sure if this would be possible, but it'd be better if Nintendo let you back everything up to the SD card, trade in/sell 3DS, go buy XL, then just restore from the SD card.

Yup. Say goodbye to every online game purchase you've made on the eShop. Nintendo seriously needs an account system; especially for their handhelds.

Yep. This happened to my Aqua Blue 3DS. Pretty much all input methods stopped working, both the D-Pad, half of the buttons and bottom touch screen. I emailed Nintendo explaining what had happened and the fact I would lose my game licences if I had it swapped. They just gave me a generic automated response telling me how to transfer the 3DS licence.

Never buying from the e-Shop again.

One of the first concerns most people were speculating about is that a larger screen would make it tougher for some to keep their sweet spot. EG article basically confirms it. I wonder how bad it really is. Some people have a tough time with the original 3DS, especially when they're first playing. I'm going to guess that your eyes will be trained for the XL screen after a while and it won't be a reason not to buy it.

Ooh that's definitely a dealbreaker, I wanted an XL because I thought the 3D was "improved". I have trouble keeping the sweetspot and often just turn off the 3D.

I want to jump on the eShop retail download wagon.
But no solid account-system = no sale from me. They better have a system update ready by the time NSMB launches.

I like that the system is matte, but the OG 3DS looks a lot classier.
I'll probably skip this unless the 3D effect really is better, but there's been some conflicting reports so far.

Have there been any hands-on impressions (videos) of DS games on the 3DS XL? I might get an XL if the following is fine:

- screen is that significantly better
- 3D sweet spot is wider. Assuming it would be with a bigger screen
- DS games look as good if not better than DSi XL

I have not bought a darn thing on the eShop outside of downloading demos, so it would be easier for me to cut ties to my existing 3DS.

I assumed so too, but apparently not. May even be smaller? I've heard people claim it but I'd love some sort of diagram to explain how this would be.

The transfer stuff is why I'm trying to sell my regular 3DS to a friend, that way I can transfer everything off of it. I can find some price higher than a trade in towards the 3DS XL and lower than a used 3DS so both of us win.

If you ask at the retailer when you're trading in your 3DS if you can transfer over the content after you buy the XL, 9 times out of 10 they'll let you. Just make sure you can set up a hotspot on your phone and you're good to go.

I'm in the same boat. I'm sure they'll have an account system at some point, as they've talked about accessing the Miiverse on 3DS.

ridiculous ass backwards way of doing things but gamestop might let you buy the XL, take it home, do your transfer, bring it back to the store, "return" it for a refund, and then rebuy it, trading in your current 3DS.

hopefully they do have an elegant plan setup for this system launch. Being friends with the dudes at the GS i frequent helps though.

I'll be keeping both systems but the transfer is definitely a pain in the ass. I cannot believe how far behind the times Nintendo is in that regard. I mean, the PSP was released in 2004 and supports account logins and downloads (even though it did not originally). Nintendo really needs to find a way to address this.

I don't turn on 3D often but I do for certain games like Mario 3D Land. I hate having to adjust my head to refocus on the 3D. Maybe its just an issue with the type of 3D they've implemented on the 3DS.

To those of you that have been screwed by Nintendo's online account system/customer services, I'd suggest contacting them again and again until they sort out a transfer for you. I've heard plenty of stories where people have received great customer service from Nintendo;they've sent their systems away and they did the transfer. Of course, it means you're without your system for a bit, but it's better than losing everything you purchased.

Nintendo have an obligation to transfer games if your system stops working. You paid for those games and can no longer play them because of a fault of their product.

Oh, and whoever it was that said he was told to "go to Japan" should have immediately got hold of somebody else and filed a formal complaint against the person who he spoke to. That isn't just piss-poor customer service; that's outright fucking racist. I guarantee that if you had took that further, not only would they have complied with your original request, you might have got something else out of it by way of apology.

I noticed, that the german, the UK and the US Support pages all say something different about the data that is being tranferred:

German Support says:

The following is not transferred, but deleted from the source system:
- User information - excluding Nintendo DS software settings
- Internet Settings
- Parental Control restrictions
- Credit Card information
- Nintendo Swapnote
- Demos, downloaded from the eShop

UK Support says:

The following is not transferred, and the corresponding data in the target system is also not deleted: (Note: What about the source system?)
- User information - excluding Nintendo DS software settings.
- Internet Settings.
- Parental Control restrictions.
- Credit Card information.

And the US support says all this data will be transferred (excl. CC info).

Lol, i don´t know what to believe now.
Loosing all swapnote data would really suck!

As a total 3DS newbie... I'm interested in the 3DS XL, but I have a few questions though..

I own a DSi and play Flipnote studio, can I download it on the 3DS (XL)? are other DSi ware games compatible?

I'll live if I lose my little eshop purchases, but I'll be pissed if I lost my ambassador games. And I'm not buying any full retail games until Nintendo give me an account based system

Looks awesome, but after spending some quality time over vacation with the regular model, I've decided to just stick with what I have. I'll wait for the inevitable second revision, with even more improvements.

I also like Street Passing/ using the pedometer to gain coins, and won't be able to fit that monster in my pockets.

Look ma! Real shoulder buttons. Not little nubs!
