Guild Wars 2 Launch Date announced: August 28th, 2012

I'm finally bored of WoW and this looks pretty cool, I'm going to go for it!
If I pre-purchase now is there anything I can do before the last beta weekend? Install the client, play around with the character creator maybe?

I really have no idea how practical this is, but is sounds cool. I think it would be cool to see our guild adopt a Charr legion organization in WvW.

Charr only

Heh, if you had said "Asura only" you would have had like, half the guild right there.

That said, I'm not an officer in the guild, so I have no inside knowledge of what they have planned. Hit and run is perfectly practical.

At this point I don't think we have anything specific planned. I think most of us officers have been through the whole "militaristic, ultra-organized hardcore" guild thing. Beyond that structure being unnecessary in GW2 to get anything accomplished, it's very tiring both running and being run by that kind of guild.

That said, the plan has always been to watch and promote people based on initiative (not that being an officer carries any kind of super powers). If people step up and organize cool stuff, we'll make sure they have the ability to organize that short of thing as easily as possible.

We just want people to have fun with GAFers.

What is the cooldown situation with the ability, and do the placed mine and the minefield share a cooldown (and for that matter can you have both out at once)?

I'm 99% sure using a utility skill triggers the cooldown on the toolbelt skill, so I would guess no.

Sorry for the double post;

If I pre-purchase now is there anything I can do before the last beta weekend? Install the client, play around with the character creator maybe?

You can install the client now if you pre-purchase. I'm on my phone, so I don't have the link, but that is something you can do today. That way when BWE3 starts you can be ready. Whether you'll have to download it all again for launch or not is still up in the air but I'm pretty sure they'll just patch the beta client rather than have you get a whole new one. Still, thats a possibility, but you can at least be ready for the next beta event.

Home now, here's the link: https://account.guildwars2.com/download

You need an account to log in, of course...

I really didnt want it turn into some hardcore thing since I dont think that is fun either. I guess thats why i was asking if it would be practical or not since I was thinking more along the lines of several dedicated WvW lovin peeps basically be the war band leaders (who by no means need to participate in any WvW since I think obligations is the death of fun) and form teams with whoever else is doing WvW and wants to be apart of the glorious Charr legion. If the guildy simply wants to join the zerg or dick around, then they should be free to do so

On another topic, I am also rather curious as to how the economy is going to be impacted by instanced resource nodes. Since there is really no competition for them, I really can't imagine that crafting resources will be as expensive as in other games.

Usually I dont bother with crafting because of the money sink, but with instanced nodes and the fact that you can gain experience from leveling your crafting has me pretty tempted to get into crafting from the beginning. Hell, depending on the price of materials and my money situation in general, I think I might save the materials that wont get used by my main's professions since you can gain 20 levels by leveling 2 professions to the max

Not all crafting materials are from nodes. You're going to have very rare materials that will go for A LOT of money from mob drops or stuff from chests and what have you.

Think of node resources as the basic/common materials and the mob drops/chests drops as the rare and expensive mats.

And salvaging, Salvaging!!

Coming from a long time in DAoC (and it being my first MMO), my full intention is to be in WvW 95% of the time. BUT, I want to experience all GW2 has to offer. I had an absolute blast in PvE during the betas and BWEs so will probably concentrate on PvE for the first couple months of the game. After that, it's all WvWs. Gotta earn that gold for blueprints!

As for the economy, another factor is to consider that the market isn't just your server, it's all servers. There will always be those that would rather hit the market/play the market than do the searching for ingredients themselves. I'm assuming that cooking ingredients will fetch the biggest value since they said it would take a lot of traveling the world to get ingredients and it's the most difficult of the trades.

I can't wait to dig into the crafting in this game. Who am I kidding? I can't wait to dig into EVERYTHING in this game.

Wait, You mean all of the servers use the same AH? Basically meaning that there is only 1 guild wars 2 economy?

But yea, I can imagine that cooking ingredients will be more expensive than instanced nodes. But I really dont think those instanced node materials will be as expensive as in other games. I agree that the special crafting items will be more expensive due to rarity

Yup.

From the wiki:

"The trading post is the Guild Wars 2 player trading system. It is global, enabling trade between all players across different servers."
http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Trading_Post

Guild Wars 1 had a global economy too with its material trading posts having dynamic and automated exchange rates.

The trading post in GW2 is over 9000 times better and more involved, but it has gone down a few times under stress in the BWEs.

Yeah, the Trading Post is built on a web based server because you'll be able to access it via browser and mobile apps so they probably just haven't nailed down the servers for that yet. The good thing is when they went down they were always back up within a minute.

Have they said if that app is going to cost any money? Personally, I think they should charge for it since its one of those convenience things, and if people are willing to spend money on that, awesome. It simply means more money for arenanet and probably a better patch/expansion game in the future for me

Oh, don't get me wrong, if somebody wants to organize Charr WvW events that's awesome and I'll happily join in (planning on a Charr Engineer at the moment, but I also think an Asura might be more appropriate).

I just mean that GW2 doesn't have content where people have to show up and even if it did I don't think many people (after years of suffering through that sort of thing in other MMOs) want the kind of hardcore show-up-or-you're-kicked experience. We'll obviously be in Guild chat trying to get people to come to WvW for stuff, working on dungeons, achievements, whatever.

I'm going to take insane pictures of the CE. Fully paid off, I just can't wait!

I'm not sure if I'm geeky enough to do an unboxing. Maybe. Good excuse to wear pants that day, I guess.

I'd definitely pay for the app. I recall them mentioning it a few months ago. I wonder how far along they are with it.

Not about the geek. It's about the geek SWAG.

I think it will be free, but I don't think we know for sure at this point. If you really want to keep supporting them then kick out some money each month in the BLTC.

Oh, i dont want to spend any more money than i have to. Im a cheap cheap bastard. I want other people to!

This is definitely one of the main reasons why I am interested in GW2. I am sick of raiding. Done with it. Sick of having that on my schedule, that obligation, that job. I just want to play and enjoy

And that Charr only thing was a joke ;)

I actually am torn between a Charr and Asura engineer as well. No other race 'feels' like an engineer to me, so its pretty much between those two. Right now, im leaning more towards charr

I would love the app to be free, which I am sure it will be. I love tools like that.

I'm definitely making a Human Female as my main. I've just always done it that way (the exception being a Blood Elf, since they were the only Horde paladins), and I have a certain name and look that I like to use from one game to the next. Probably going to be a Guardian or Warrior, depending on which one I have the most fun with in BWE3. Unless the Sylvari just blow me away, then I might actually consider making one my main character. We'll see.

I'm not sure I can get myself past the slow, lumbering animation of Norns to roll one, I'd love to make a Norn Warrior since I'm sure at max level they look like huge, armored Juggernauts... but that slow run animation just turns me off (I had the same issue with Tauren). I'm also not a huge fan of their "It's all about ME and MY GLORY and MY VICTORY and blah blah blah"... they seem obnoxiously arrogant and self-centered... the Asura have their superiority thing too, but it's more endearing since they're a race of diminutive mad scientists rather than big, beefy dudebros.

Definitely going Charr Engineer. I gave it a lot of thought and I know if I don't go with the Charr for this profession, I probably won't roll one.

I'm not big on casters or pet classes, so no Ranger, necro or elementalist at first. That leaves Thief and Mesmer. Based on what I played during BWE2, Mesmer just isn't for me (besides, my wife is planning to main one). Not sure Thief is for me either. So I dunno what to make my Asura.

Hah. I'm glad I'm not the only one unnecessarily agonizing over class/race choices.

I know for a fact I will eventually want to play all 5 races, which is pretty unusual for me, especially in an MMO. But man, I really like every race in the game, even the Norn (though they definitely are way outclassed by the other 3 non-human races).

My first character is going to be a Human. For my "main" I like to play something reflective of myself (appearance-wise), even though I have no intention of roleplaying. It just feels right. And as for class choice, Elementalist because fireballs and lightning bolts, come on.

I decided long ago that my second character would be a Sylvari. Their whole asthetic is just so appealing and unique. And their mythology is much more interesting than the "generic elf race" remarks that people keep throwing around about them. Plus, Jennifer Hale voices female Sylvari. I was originally going to have this as a Ranger, because I love their moveset, but the more I see of Rangers, the more I feel like the pet aspect is going to ruin it. Instead, I think I Warrior is going to be more fun, even if not the most appropriate class for Sylvari.

Third character is Charr Engineer because it's just a perfect fit.

Fourth will be Asura, and probably a Mesmer. I like the concept of the class, but I hope they polish it up a bit before release. In any case the class seems like it has a high skill cap, so it makes sense to take it later on when I've developed a bit more skill at the game.

For my fifth character, my Norn, it will be whatever I like best of the remaining class. I've all but ruled out Necromancer, so it will be between Thief, Guardian, and Ranger. Right now Guardian is the front runner by far.

As for the Norn running animation issues, I found it wasn't too bad as a relatively short Female Norn, though I guess you don't get to look like an Armored Juggernaut either.

On the norn, I made my Norn Mesmer a slim build, dashing motherfucker of a man. He was the smallest Norn running around Hoelbrak. But he was a pimp indeed, with his purple/white color scheme. I just wish the Mesmer had more of a focus in the class. Hopefully this BWE will give them some much needed love.

I actually really started to dig the Norn a lot more after listening to wartower podcost on Norn Lore. it actually made me want to check out a Norn Ranger (I think that will fit well) in BWE3. No Bows for me though. Im going dual axes! That sounds awesomely Nornish to me. Im basically going to treat my pet like a shadow who follows me around since I am not a huge fan of micromanaging pets either. If that becomes an issue Ill probably drop the class

I also want to check out a Sylvari Mesmer. To me, that class and race 'fits' as well. Im not really sure why since Sylvari are supposedly earnest, happy, open, and honest, and mesmers rely on misdirection and deception, but I never said my reasoning had to make sense!

I dunno if I will ever try the THF. That class really doesnt interest me. Necro and Ele ill try, but it will definitely be the last 2 that i will

Engineer
Mesmer
Ranger
Guardian
Warrior
Necro
Ele
Thf

I also have to agree with you on the Asura. Besides Engineer, no class really 'fits' asura for me, and I kinda want to make my enginner a Charr

I was originally going to have this as a Ranger, because I love their moveset, but the more I see of Rangers, the more I feel like the pet aspect is going to ruin it.

This isn't aimed at you specifically, but you planted the seed in my mind that grew into this thought.

I'm beginning to wonder if playing in the BWEs was a good idea. I see people, myself included, making decisions about professions that may radically change before launch.

For example, I know a LOT of people have written of Rangers because of the Pet AI. And yet, in the interview Jon Peters gave yesterday, he says "we have handled a few bugs on the AI side, but we haven’t really tackled it full on yet." So all of these complaints about Ranger pets, and all of these people writing off an otherwise cool-looking profession, may be for nothing. And yet I can't bring myself to even putting them on the list of professions I want to play.

He also says "Expect to see significant changes for almost every profession for the next BWE." I was on the fence about going Warrior or Guardian for my main. BWE1, it was Guardian. BWE2, it was Warrior. All of that is right out the window.

So, I guess what I'm saying is... I can't write off any professions now, nor can I pick which one I want to play.

And that pisses me off because I want to jump into the game and play, not spend hours agonizing if I've made the right choice.

Well, dedicate your first levels to exploring, dynamic events and heart quests. That way you should get a lot of resource materials (dont use em). If you dont like the class, quit, and pick a new one, and simply repeat the process until you find one you like

once you do, well, level up that crafting for free levels!

Clever. Especially since I won't be doing any crafting anyways until I pick my main.

That, at the very least, makes me feel a little better. Thanks.

I still don't like not knowing what class I'm going to play. I don't think I've ever played an MMO, even my first, without having that decision made early.

Ive decided to go with engineer no matter what since the concept seems interesting and somewhat unique and his abilities look fun. Flamethrower baby!

Now, if I end up not liking it, Ill just choose another one, and I really wont feel all that bad about it since I dont feel a need to get to the max level like most mmos

Yeah, I definitely feel the same. Even the classes I've written off, somewhere in my mind I'm thinking I'll get around to play them someday. I suspect it probably won't happen, because 5 characters is already a crapload for an MMO, but I still kind of want to. Even the "boring" classes are still loads of fun, they just don't stand out in comparison to the classes that really appeal to me.

My problem with the Ranger is not that the pet AI is broken. I'm sure that will greatly improve before release. But honestly, even if the pet works perfectly 100% of the time, I just find "has a pet" to be pretty boring as a class gimmick. I still know that ranger will be fun to play based on its moveset, and from watching gameplay videos. But there are other classes that have awesome movesets and an interesting class mechanic. This is also why Guardian is only my 5th choice at the moment, because as fun as it was to play, I just didn't find virtues to be all that interesting. Then again, that may change when I get past level 15 on my Guardian

Which mission, Sunshine? Sometimes you can "protect" an npc by having him wait at the back while you run forward and clear the enemies (this works for a Crystal Desert mission, and some others like the Luxon Turtle mission).

If you are on the mission where you have to protect Jalis from the Mursaat invasion, just run up and meet the enemies as they enter the doors. I think you are a Rit, so use your ghosties to distract enemies at the door you arent currently at.

Lol Jalis decided to run off and get himself killed at the fort and there was nothing I could do about it. And it was near the end.

Taking a break from that. Damn game.

Finally got approved! Promoted from creepy long time lurker to jr scum lol..

Anyway I have followed every GW2 thread on here and now that i can finally post i just want
to declare my insane HYPE for this game :)

Ill be playing an Asura ele....so...close...

Leave Jalis at the top, and stay down below. As long as no enemy gets within aggro range, Jalis wont move, and wont put himself in harm's way.

Haha, King Jalis always trying to kill himself... the same with the rest of his race (i'm not racist.) All the escort missions on gw1 are pretty infamous for those ugly bugs and suicidal AI. EOTN does it right by allowing them to die constantly. So good.

I dont think you can control Jalis, but if at the start of the seige you run down the stairs and keep the enemies engaged with you down in the center/middle area, he'll chill up at the top and not do anything. Keep an eye on your minimap for incoming enemies and just rush over to engage them real quick. As long as they start attacking you, they should remain aggro'ed on you and never go up the stairs.

Awww yeah, finally got approved myself.

Played GW 1 for a real long time and pretty much followed everything GW2 for a long time. Really looking forward to release.

Yeah, the Trading Post is built on a web based server because you'll be able to access it via browser and mobile apps so they probably just haven't nailed down the servers for that yet. The good thing is when they went down they were always back up within a minute.

Wait, what? Remote access to Trading Post data? Good God, my productivity.

Also remote access to selling and buying, perhaps..? That would doom me to food stamps.
Well, I know what president I'm voting for!

I'm not American, though. Teehee.
