Is this the first photo of red not from Nintendo ads?

I like all the colors

the blue one

IS the red a solid colour, while the others are metallic?

I think it's likely they all might have a "matte metalic" finish... maybe the lighting wasn't right to show it off in the red photo... or maybe the red is solid instead... I think we'll need more photos of red.

Random question. Does the 3DS support a wired headset? I know the DS did, but it had a little plug next to the headphone jack, where as the 3DS doesn't have that. I was thinking maybe it supports the type like on a iPhone headset where it's part of the 3.5 MM plug.

The red unit is absolutely stunning.

Those pics pretty much seal my decision to upgrade. Wasn't sure about getting rid of my red 3DS (which I'm a big fan of) for a silver or blue XL, even despite the other things I want from the XL, but those red shots have sold me.

I think so

And Nintendo even licensed a headset with an external mic

so it must use something similar to the iphone for external mics

I thought red looked pretty bad on the box but the real shot of it looks amazing. Blue and Red definitely look less "toy" like than I thought.

Nintendo has been awful at showing off even the original 3DS colors. In official photos they always make the colors look so... blah

but in amateur photos the colors always look really nice.

Eh, I don't know about that. A lot of the amateur photographs made the aqua 3DS look a lot sexier than it really was. In real life, it truly was as ugly as the official photos made it out to look.

yeah, I was thinking more of the purple and red colors

aqua would look different depending on how white or yellow the light around it is.

You guys are blind or crazy. That blue and red still look like crap.
Blue and white are two of my favorite colors, so as long as the blue is as good as it looks in some pictures I'm more than happy to stick with that. White should definitely be out for people that want it to conform with Wii U and for people who abhor colored electronics to the point of actively avoiding them if they're the only option.

Crazy for liking shades of colors that you don't? Preferences, man.

I think the Blue/Black color looks amazing. Red/Black looks pretty nice too, but I'd like to see some more pictures in different lighting and from different angles.

Still wish the Silver/Black color was available in North America, but I'd probably still choose Blue/Black over it anyway.

I just noticed there is no light for the 3D switch.

It's a niggle, but I don't like that they took out the green 3D light. I liked it because of all the different colored lights on the handheld. I think it looks cool, especially on the Cosmo Black version.

I do like the new 3D toggle switch on the XL. I don't like the toyish metallic cheap feel and look on the 3DS.

it always bugged the hell out of me. WHY IS IT EVEN THERE?! i take a big dump on colored lights if they fullfill no use at all.
i play RE:R and that shitty green light ALWAYS tells me: DAT GAME IS IN 3D!! YA MANG! 3D! NO DERP GLASSES NEEDED! I TELL YA! 3D!!!!! *grunt*

k, got it the first time. thanks!

Actually it tells you whether the current image is being displayed in 3D. Some games like MGS3D and Mario Tennis Open switch to a 2D display even with the slider on.

I know. But i REALLY. Don't need a CONSTANT light to remind me of that.

a short onscreen message wold be enough. Or a short blink of the indicator light...shit... I think i would even be able to see if goddamm slolidsnake uses one or two eyes.

whatever, good that it's gone.

It just dawned on me to try it with mic test in the settings menu. My iPhone earphones with volume and mic did not work. But then I tried my skull candy ink'd earbuds that have a mic (No volume buttons) and they did work.

Guess I have a wired mic for when playing Heroes of Ruin. :)

Sooooo... I tried the XL at Japan Expo today! Disclaimer: I do not own an OG unit.

I took my sweet time with it, since ALL of the Nintendo booth 3DSes were XL. I first tried NSMB2, which looked pretty good, but not exactly impressive. I'm not exactly a Mario fan. But still the gained screen estate is a definite improvement.
Then I moved on to KH3D and... HOLY SHIT. Looked sooooo nice o_O

What really impressed me in comparison to NSMB was definitely the 3D effect. Looked incredible and it DEFINITELY "holds" better than the effect on the first model. I went to the Square Enix booth afterwards and difference was like night and day, it was definitely harder to maintain the "spot" and going back to the small screen was really hard.

It totally cements my intention to buy a XL rather than a OG.

Good to hear about the sweet spot. I think I'm going to buy one of these just to supplement my current 3DS.. I kind-of want both. Also, I'll finally get some street passes ;_;

I agree. A constant light is bit much. A short blinking indicator light for a few seconds would make more sense asthetically. It's not a deal breaker that it's gone.

I couldn't quantify the apathy that I have had for Nintendo products since the Wii started to disappointment me. This looks fantastic and the previews only confirm that I will be jumping in on this. The only sticking point are the colours, I could settle on silver but a white or black would completely sell me, I am happy to wait until Luigis Mansion 2 in the hope of new colours.

Thanks for your first hand impressions. Glad I pre-ordered one.

Just to clarify. You mean the sweet spot is better when moving your head from left to right?

if so YES!

Are these the first photos of red not from Nintendo PR?

yeah, in those new pics the red looks like it has that metallic finish too.
