LTTP: Binary Domain

By coincidence I installed this a couple days ago, 1hr in and I'm already bored shitless...

What am I missing?....(please no 'soul' jokes)

It may just come down to the presentation. In all honesty, the shooting/cover mechanics aren't any better than any other 3rd person shooter out there, and the characters and storytelling are very caricature-ish. You got your dudebro Americans, your proper English and your noble Chinese. You have your batshit insane take-over-the-world villain and the surprise twist/betrayal at the end. It's all very rote, but I found it very fun.

I definitely agree with Garnett Lee that Cain is the most hilarious character ever. Why would a French robot speak English with a French accent? IT'S A ROBOT, IT SHOULD BE ABLE TO IMITATE ANY ACCENT OR DIALECT PERFECTLY! Brilliant design choice I think.

Off-topic: Is it really LTTP if the game just came out four months ago? I thought the same thing when I saw the LTTP: FFXIII-2 thread. Is the video game discussion universe so fast-paced that if you haven't bought the game in the first two months you're late to the party?

On-topic: Binary Domain was one of those games that I wanted to get, but had to restrict my wallet and monetary choices due to my current unemployment. If there's a super sale on Amazon or something I'll definitely pick it up, because it seems like it was a sleeper hit to everybody, based on all the comments I've seen on the game.

Loved this game. Probably my second favorite TPS this gen after Vanquish. In Nagoshi I trust.

Is the PC version worth it at all?

Yes. Runs so much better than the choppy console versions, and average cards can max it out no problem.

I've heard some complaints about it, like framerate, controls, options not being there.

Framerate has never been a problem with the game, and the most recent patch fixed the last of the quirks regarding the graphics options and m/kb issues. There's no contest at all.

The m/kb controls could be better, but they're much improved over what they were like when the game launched. The options have to be changed outside of the game but that's not a huge deal. Dunno about framerate problems, it ran great for me through my two playthroughs with a 560ti.

I dunno, I found the shooting to be very satisfying, the story and characters fun and interesting, the environments great, and the audio/visual presentation to be top notch.

What is it that you don't like about it? The feel of a game is so important to me and Binary Domain just FEELS wonderful, I think (though only with a controller as the keyboard/mouse support is iffy at best). The way enemies rip apart as you fire into them is quite satisfying.

The more I think about it, the more I think it's my old prejudice against 3rd person shooters subconsciously spoiling my enjoyment.

1st person shooters are for PC's,3rd person shooters are for consoles..using the 360 controller does mitigate that feeling to a degree, but not completely.

At the end of the day, I'm not that bothered, as it was a cheap 2nd hand purchase.

I'll keep going with it, but I think I'll only be able to dip into it when I have a spare 20mins or so.

Looks quite nice though for a renderware engined game...solid 50-60fps maxed out on a dual core CPU and Radeon 4850.

Word. I was gonna pick it up during Amazons massive DD game sale but hesitated. I'll definitely grab it sometime in the near future.

Exactly how I felt. Game was unimpressive in nearly every regard. I gave up on it a bit early though, so I may give it another shot since the impressions here seem to be overwhelmingly positive.

I love this game, I should give it another go to get the last few trust trophies...anyone still play this online? (shame that the Yakuza skins were never released outside of Japan - that and the low sales this game received. :()

I jumped in and picked this up on release just because I heard the comparisons to Vanquish in terms of enjoyment. I was really impressed with the feel of this game when it came to mowing down the bots. The guns just felt so satisfying, more so than most 3rd person shooters. The game has it's problems, but they are far out numbered by the enjoyable gameplay.

Also great to have certain cut scenes change depending on your relationship with the characters. You also feel like you really do choose the progression depending on who goes and who stays in each branching part. Will definitely play through this again at a later date.

Got this based on reading some stuff about it here on GAF a while back. One of the most surprising games I've bought in awhile. Really enjoying all aspects of it, and the team mechanics, while basic in many ways, are a pretty neat concept that I would like to see expanded much more. Figured I'd buy this one because it has "limited run" all over it.

All the comparisons to Vanquish initially turned me off on release, because for whatever reason, I couldn't get into that one. Here though, I feel like all the parts work, and destroying robots is just lots of fun.

Plus, it has involvement from creators of the Yakuza series if I recall correctly, and it shows with the likable though sometimes cheesy charm. Story is also quite interesting too surprisingly, though I'm not far enough in yet to know how well it all plays out overall. Well done Sega. They've been putting out some truly great titles lately.

What?

Brought PS3 version day one and already beat the game twice.

It's just sad that this game was the last and final nail in the SEGA's retail business coffin in the west :/

Just tried the game too, and I just don't seem to enjoy it very much. The constant rockets that makes your character stagger all the time is fucking boring to play. The story is pretty cool so far, but I fucking hate the gameplay.

Constant rockets? I can't say I recall that issue occurring particularly often. Which section of the game are you talking about?

The jet ski part is terrible and the level designs are pretty generic. But I like the all around look of the game.

We really need to set a time limit on how long games are out before we do a LTTP thread. This shits been out for only four months and it hasn't even been price dropped yet.

Pay 60 dollar for bru bru skies and explosive bots.

The only time I can think that this happened was when you're fighting the bomber, and he shoots missiles at you. Even then, those missiles are so easy to avoid by simply being in the building.

The superior PC version is 10 bucks this week.

Had a lot of fun with the Demo on Steam, and I´m hoping for a good price in the Summer Sale. Ran at a great framerate at 1080p on my laptop with a GT 540m.

Dude, $10 on Amazon. I don't think it's going to get better than that on Steam, plus you can use the key on steam.

Cool game so far. The combat is decent enough, if not slightly repetitive. The weapons could be a little more diverse and the voice acting is atrocious. Why are they always YELLING?! They are always talking like they are in the middle of a warzone and sometimes it feels really out of context.

But the squad command system works (though I would not advise using Kinect for voice control) and somehow that makes interacting with these characters slightly more interesting than your typical shooter.

For the most part the game just feels like mowing down wave after wave of robots, but that's sometimes good enough for a shooter.

Rented it from Gamefly last week. Played it for a couple of hours and thought it was boring. Kept thinking to myself "Why am I not playing Gears of War right now", which this game borrows heavily from.

Exactly how I felt. Game was unimpressive in nearly every regard. I gave up on it a bit early though, so I may give it another shot since the impressions here seem to be overwhelmingly positive.

Damn...so here I am bashing this game without even giving it a fair chance. I finally beat it tonight, and had an absolute blast with it. Everything just suddenly clicked and I was hooked until the end. Good, chessy, over the top fun with a surprisingly solid story. I found myself caring for the characters a lot more than I thought I would. The game is crimanally underrated (currently holds a 74% from Metacritic *XBOX 360 version*-What?), and deserved much better reviews. Definitely one of my favorites of the year so far. Too bad we'll probably never see a sequel :(

I'm glad this topic showed up again. I was gonna suggest it in the amazon thread since it seems like it was popular.

I'm really enjoying the game so far. The shooting feels fine and the enemies all get shot up very nice. I love the shotgun in the game just tearing through robots in one hit. Very satisfying. The game moves super fast too which is something I always feel is missing from most western TPSs. It's making me want to play Vanquish again. (also Yakuza 4 for some reason)

If this game was Dreamcast Exclusive it would've sold better! ;^)

Agreed. BD is barely even 3-4 months old. Not as bad as the Journey LTTP thread though. :P

Bought it 2 days ago. Will be playing on and off as I need to prepare for work stuff this weekend.

Man, I really need to finish my 2 game console backlog first. I was going to get it on the 360, but at 10 dollars it's just cheaper to get on PC.

I've been playing my $10 Amazon version for a few hours and I really like it so far. I usually don't really like the Gears model of shooting, where you have to pump fifty bullets into anything to kill it, but the hit reactions in Binary Domain actually make it interesting. Instead of just locking the trigger down and waiting it feels like every bullet you're firing is blowing off something important on those robots. You shoot off a robot's right arm and he'll pick his gun up off the ground to fire it with his left. And I really like the idea of a headshot knocking out a robot's friend-or-foe circuit, making him turn on his pals.

Unfortunately I'm fallen victim to some awful checkpointing a couple of times. I had to repeat the whole awful jetski section after getting pushed into a cluster of mines, and I find having to redo that much of a game really demoralizing. I just have no patience for that kind of thing anymore.

I'm really enjoying the story so far, though, and there's some nice character development going on. I'd swear Troy Baker and Laura Bailey are some new breed of vocal chameleons; it blew my mind when I went to IMDb and found out who they were voicing. The squad mate trust system really works for me, because I love just about any conversation system in a game. I just wish the idiots wouldn't keep running into my line of fire all the time.

Bought it last week. Considering this is their first attempt with a third person shooter, its really solid game.
Funny thing is i thought it had better gameplay than gears, i dunno maybe because the game's faster and those robots are really fun to shoot.
Its unpolished in some areas but even so , its really a crime how poorly this game sold. People that like third person shooters should really give BD a chance now that its on sale at amazon

Is there any way to fix Binary Domain so it is full screen (without black borders) at 1920x1200. Devs seriously need to support 16x10 resolutions.

Sell everything you know you're never going to play and join me. It's amazing completing games, selling them off, and knowing you don't have pressure to play a stack of games you probably never liked in the first place.

The real "backlog" I have is STEAM at 50 or so games. However, most are from 8-15 dollar steam summer packs. I will finish those over time, but I am not worried about finishing those. I plan to be very sparse during the summer sale this year also.

Nooooooooooooooooo

Pretty much. I thought Vanquish did it much better.

It's not just the shooting, which wasn't terrible it just wasn't anything interesting either, but the areas you fought in were largely flat and boring, the downtime between action was equally uninteresting, the on the rails sections were probably the low point for me. I definitely wouldn't say it was a bad game, I just don't see what it does that is as good as any other shooter out there.

I do really like the design of the boss/mini boss robots. much better than the stream of green and red robots.

I have to agree, Vanquish's way was much better.
However BD was still a fun adventure and was worth the $.

Bought it on the Amazon PC sale 2 days ago and completed it earlier today, absolutely fantastic game. I was completely engrossed in ways these type of shooters hardly ever get me to be. It just clicked with me, even all the cheesy stuff just felt charming instead of bad to me. And it might be because I'm new to pc gaming and am too used to console graphics, but I thought it looked completely stunning in 1080p/60fps on the HDTV, my jaw was on the floor constantly.

just couldnt get past the main characters Adam Sandler face..

on a serious note, played it for a while but it just didnt hold my attention, loved the attempt at the story but the whole entire theme/presentation just didnt grab me as i thought it would.

need to give it another go

I haven't played much games lately but I got a couple good sessions in an now I'm on Chapter 5.

This game is just great. There is a good amount of enemy variety and a bunch of bosses and sub-bosses. The weapons feel solid and if you focus on upgrading Dan's rifle it becomes a beast! I love the robot body location damage and the trust meter mechanics. Plus it's a better than average looking game and the environments are slick and pretty.

The story is also quite good. Demented and crazy but good. Robots that pass for human and think they're human is actually really good sci-fi and they play out that scenario in some very impactful cutscenes. They also look at the issue from many angles so that once you're deep in the story you can see the point of view from treating them as abominations (which they are) to sympathy (which they also deserve.)

It's a complete package and a great overall game. My only complaints are that the A.I. could be better because allies can run into your firezone. As well some of the boss fights can be overwhelming with all the attacks they can spam. Still I wish there were more games like this.

Just like Vanquish this is Japanese gaming done right!

Got this game off of amazon and it's so much fun, it's just so satisfying to shoot robots and watch parts fly off them

Only part I didn't enjoy was one section where my framerate tanked to the teens out of nowhere, was really annoying but thankfully didn't last long
