LTTP: Binary Domain

The music while you first enter the Amida building, or however it's spelled, is fucking kick ass Brad Fiedel 1st Terminator-esque quality shit. Shoot it through my veins.

Is there anything mechanically that makes this game interesting or is it just a competent shooter with Japanese charm?

I'm buying it either way, just wondering where in my backlog it should go.

Mostly its that the robot enemies fall apart when you shoot them extremely well. I found that alone kept combat satisfying throughout the whole game. There's also giant japanese bosses that mix up the action, and a pretty neat emp pulse you can push out in front of you that makes for great crowd control. I suppose the squad commands and upgrade purchasing is worth mentioning too, but those elements aren't exactly great, more like its just there.

Its not like shooters are trying to push the boundaries a whole lot nowadays so the mechanics totally seem different enough to say the mechanics are good. It's still the japanese story, environments, and characters that forces people to take notice, but the mechanics hold their own.

Just like Spec Ops gameplay wise it does nothing new or fantastic but its still a good experience . The part where it succeeds are the characters, the design and the story.

My big issues with the story was (very late story spoilers)
the way the game handled the philosophical debate of artificial intelligence and the blurred line between machine and life, and the way the team treats Faye. It's a pretty generic topic for sci-fi, but they basically make your entire team one composed of bigoted idiots who blindly, irrational hate on anything remotely related to robotics for no good reason. I ended up hating pretty much everyone.

Is it really that surprising that
a team whose whole entire job is to kill robots and uphold the New Geneva Convention is quick to turn there guns on what was a gigantic violation of the New Geneva Convention? Hell as far as we know Dan would have also been up to shooting her if he wasn't all romantic with her.

And regarding the logic behind the New Geneva Convention
surely you can imagine how uneasy it would make people, especially people in the government, to have fake people working along side them on potentially extremely sensitive situations. You never know what to expect from a "fake person", and its human nature to always default to extreme fear when faced with the unknown.

There were certainly some minor plotholes and maybe characters change their minds to quickly at the end, but I really think all of the major stuff makes complete sense.

Just finished and Binary Domain was easily one of the best third person shooters I've played in the last couple years. It felt like a complete experience even if the story was a little lacking. I thought the twists that it did have were done well enough that it made me want to keep playing.

Also those boss battles were all awesome. I usually hate boss battles but every single boss battle in this game was huge, explosive, and really put me into the experience. The cutscenes connected events together seamlessly and made everything feel like a complete game.

I am glad this thread popped up along with the GMG sale as it allowed me to pick this game up cheap, even though my experience thus far has proven this game was worth full price. Gunplay is very satisfying though weapon variety seems a bit lacking throughout most engagements. I really like the boss battles so far and performance is amazing on PC. I think the thing that really brings it together for me is Dan's mobility. He isn't a monkey like Drake but he plays more solidly and never feels like he is stuck to cover. Moving in and out of engagements seems very fluid. I personally prefer speed over soemthing like Gears so this game is definitely satisfying a craving that only Vanquish and Uncharted 2 have filled before this. Unfortunately level design is pretty lacking and the overall art design is a bit bland (Vanquish was kind of like thhis as well). All in all, a very satisfying purchase, and being on PC i donMt have to live wondering what it would have been like at 60fps!

I'm currently playing it because of the Amazon sale, but I really hate the gorilla robot.

Otherwise I am enjoying the game more than I thought I would. Some of the dialogue is actually pretty funny.

Yeah, the gorilla robot is basically the lowpoint of the game. Good game btw...really hope it sells enough for a sequel.

the
howitzer
was really frustrating since it took like 10 mouse movements to get the reticule from one side of the screen to the other.

also was wondering if anyone could help me out with some end game spoilers.
what happened to cain? i know amada took control of him or whatever and he ran off, but i don't remember seeing him after that. was he was in league with him or was it just that he had his mind controlled or whatever?

Ending spoilers:
Amada took control of him. In the "best" ending, he'll come crashing through the roof before the final boss and join you, and he'll be the one taking the hit for Faye (without dying).

They probably should have done something with him if you didn't get that ending, but I guess this way they left the possibility open for him to return for a sequel... ... :(

Thanks. I guess I should replay it then since I didn't get that.

That can happen the other way? That's interesting to know but I assume
that only happens if his trust in you is super low?

I had him at like...
three bars or so and Cain still didn't come back. Bo took the hit and died. I guess you have to max it.

More ending spoilers,

There's three variations on the ending:

Very High with every squadmember (I think?): Cain returns, Bo stays loyal. Cain protects Faye. Everybody lives.
Very High with Bo: Cain does not return. Bo stays loyal, but dies protecting Faye.
Otherwise: Cain does not return. Bo jumps into a mech and fights you. Rachael dies protecting Faye.

I think the post-credits scene is there regardless.

EDIT: Black bars everywhere. Here's something that isn't much of a spoiler: Everybody should buy this game.

That was the only boss fight that
all 2-3 fights of it like with the turret
I felt was poor. I had to basically keep circling around the escalators to beat him.

That's interesting. Too bad the system is pretty easy to game though, but I like that it has it nonetheless.

Can other allies also
die, like Shindo or Kurosawa? My entire Rust Crew team was at least 3+ bars in trust and I got the "best" ending but Kurosawa just bailed after like 30 minutes anyway and Shindo died after going PTSD before the elevator out of the Hollow Children graveyard
.

Kurosawa will always bail and Shindo will always die, other's dying I have played like 2 playthroughs with everyone but Cain at the end and another with him. But any others dying I think only happens at ending.

Oh btw did you any of you try to raise the bar to the maximum like normal or did the almost forever respawning enemy thing?

Hear, hear, playing this game before Mass Effect 3 really spoil me in terms of shooting where you could shoot off limbs and the head so the robot just attacks their own teammate.

I just picked this up today for the pc. I played the single player for a couple hours and had a ton of fun. I also took a look at the multiplayer, but it's dead. I'm pretty sad about that because it looks genuinely fun. I am liking what I have played a lot though.

Finished this today, it was fantastic from start to finish. The shooting was solid, the characters were great, and the story went totally batshit insane in the last chapter. The game ended right when it needed to. I think I enjoyed it more than UC3 and the Gears 3 campaign.

"Tell your momma I loved her." Fucking Big Bo.

Personally I really though they could have done more with the story,
since the whole human element and the hollow childrens plight seemed to have generally vanished after one particular scene with the man who found out he was a hollow child was executed.

As if they gave up on that side of the story all together. Since it did seem quite interesting with what you see on the human side at the start of the game with the kids and the guy scrounging for weaponry to sell, then in another section within the refugee camp with the captured man who was a hollow child.

Damned shame since could have been something special.

Is it weird that im not really finding the shooting that engaging or satisfying but its actually the exposition the thing that im enjoying the most?

I really like the characters and the story. It's the right amount of cheesy. It's as if SEGA made a game based on the Aliens crew as a Dreamcast 2 launch title or something. Its nuts and I love it.

Yeah that was the biggest downer when I had figured that out too. After that went to sell the game since saw it would be a slog going through the game again and upgrading everything from scratch. Not to mention trying to get everyones trust level to max.

Been watching since I was pumped at TGS, was quickly shocked when so few on Gaf seemed to think the game was gonna be good. Great to see it so beloved now. I am a PC gamer now a days, so I waited for the PC port which initially had some issues so I waited for patches and just recently bought during Amazon's sale.

Digging it so far, near the end of chapter 3, and I'd say it's the best third person shooter this gen after Vanquish.

Just finished Max Payne 3 and I couldn't resist $10. Downloading now. Man, this has been a great week for sales on games!

I´m playing Binary Domain right now and like it very much, feels kinda like a slower Vanquish and the way you can dismantle the robots is absolutely great.

Got it for 20€ on Amazon.

I thought it was mostly a good game.

As far as the shooting goes, it was very solid. It was faster paced then say Gears without all the weight and for that I found it to be better then Gears. Moving my character did'nt feel slow and plodding, so going from cover to cover felt fun. The game did'nt feel like pop and cover at all, which is great. Most of the aiming and shooting felt great. A little more weapon diversity could have helped, as the game felt like a bore in that regard. In the end I mostly used the machine gun as there was little need thanks to weapon variety and enemy variety to mix it up. Not to say there were'nt enough types of enmies, there were. It's just unlike genre bests like RE4 and Vanquish, a saw few situations where I needed to change it up. All in all, it's very well made and competent shooter game. Above the average. The squad base adds some character, but is'nt that deep.

As far as story, it's a bit more mixed. The characters are actually pretty good. Being a Japanese game targeted at westerns I expected another "Quantum Theory", in that in order to appeal to us the Japanese feel the need to make the characters badass and jerks(like western video game protags). But the game avoids that, none of the characters offend. Likewise non of them soar high. The french robot, being the best example. In say Valve's hands you would have a character for the ages as the groundwork is there, but the game dosent go far enough to make him turly great. He's got his 1 or 2 characteristics and they are amusing, but thats it. I think the game does it's characters decent, they all are basically squad stereotypes, but the game ads a bit more to make them not that bad. The British dude is hardass, but the game gives him some things to make him seem a bit less of a douche. They are good, but nothing special.

The story is ok. Some good twists, but I don't think it delved enough in what it means to be a robot in a human world thats scared of robots replicating them. It seemed pretty clear cut in te story, with all the obvious shades of grey. "Oh I still deserve to live" "Oh Humans are plenty evil and Robots may not be". Like with the characters, it makes for a fun and entertaining story, but maybe not exactly memorable. I do like that they story avoided exactly having one of you be a hallow child. The main characters backstory being compared to his feelings and actions in the current situation was nice though.

In terms of graphics, I thought it looked pretty good. As usual the Yakuza team's faces look great and the city environments were well rezlied. Robots look cool in their clean deign.

All in all a pretty good game.

My god these voice command things are awful.

My mic is fine and people can understand me just fine on mumble but this? nah

I love the feel of the robots and bosses breaking up, it's satisfying. Other than that there's nothing really special or unique about this game, but it's totally solid and I love its B-movie charm.

Just turn that shit off.

Game is amazing. Loving it.

I'd like to see like a flowchart or something of different things that happen depending on who you take or get to trust you. Or like just one YouTube example.

Should I grab the PC version of this or pick up the PS3 version?

PC version is on sale for wicked cheap, but I tend to prefer third person games on console. Though I did recently play through Spec Ops on PC and was happier for it, because the PS3 demo for that was god awful, and it looked and ran great on my PC. Really thinking of getting BD from amazon for ten bucks, but also really feel like i'd be better off getting the PS3 version at some point....

What do, GAF?

Has anyone had problems mapping buttons on PC? I have an off-brand wired 360 controller that I've never had any other problem with in anything, and the configuration utility won't recognize the triggers

Why would anyone get the console version if you have a beefy enough PC? Only reason I could think of would be price (its never cheaper on consoles anyway, so forget that) and friends list....and no one is playing this game online.

So go with the PC version.

PC version runs better and looks sharper.

I'm going to start this now, what difficulty do you guys recommend? One that's not too frustrating in terms of dying over and over at a spot. I want to enjoy the story.

I tried the PC demo today. WOW. In all my years of PC gaming I have never seen such shitty job at mapping controls. There is not even a option to remap them and they seemingly went out of there way to make the default controls obscure. There is a flat symbol with two raised edges I still cant find on keyboard.

The game is pretty easy on normal aside from one or two bosses.

Wrong.

There is a seperate configuration tool outside the game.

The flat symbol migh be the space bar?

People like the convenience of a console, being hooked into their big screen tv? I know you can do that with a PC, but not everyone brings their beast desktop into the living room.

You're making that sound like a bad thing. "I'm taking you out, yahoo".
Not a bad thing at all. I think it's funny, actually. The resemblance has me in stitches.

just caved and bought this on Amazon, should I use gamepad or mouse and keyboard?

kb/m for sure. Just try and get used to the accelerated aim. Oh, and CERTAINLY, dont forget about customizing the keys before launching. The default is fucking bonkers.
