EVO 2012 Thread 2 Because one thread wasnt enough to hold all the hype and the salt

Yeah they needed to show more information, since they were behind schedule a lot of people were just clueless. I'm pretty sure viewers left after Marvel because they thought it was over since it was late and the break went for so long. I noticed that during AE there was a spike of spectators when Daigo was playing, he sure can draw viewers like no one else.

The problem is that they just say things on stream once as if that covers it...the nature of streaming means people are constantly coming and going, so a little static information on screen instead of silence and a logo would go a long way in retaining viewers. No one wants to check in the stream chat and at this event, they couldn't even do that if they wanted unless they paid up.

So that's a pretty big dropped ball in terms of presentation, imo.

What would be REALLY cool is if they had a streaming ticker with results between matches! Like, the previous 5 wins in the bracket that updates every match. Basically, look at what ESPN does and copy it (in terms of presentation.) They may as well...it's a live broadcast like any sports event. If they can get replays and things like that, then they have the technology to add little touches like this. There's still a lot of information that viewers need that they have to kind of hunt for on forums or in the chat--ideally, they could get all of this, or at least links to the info on the twitch page, from the stream.

Get on that Spooky! It'll look so pro...

They are definitely going to be learning from this evo since viewer count didn't meet expectations.

The schedules for this events seem to get worse every time. Had to leave for work before SFIV even started. :D

From the sound of it, I should consider me lucky.

that'd be crazy if there was a ticker feed with live updates for scores to the matches that go down offstream...

I have a feeling most of the KOF viewers were just waiting for marvel, but who knows. It was actually the most hype tournament of the entire event with MK9. SF4 was so boring I almost fell asleep, there isn't a single player in top 8 who is anywhere near infiltration level. That guy was literally on fire. It was a slaughter, and there wasn't any hype for me.

In marvel, I'm one of those salty people who hates f. champ because of how he is probably the biggest asshole in the entire scene, I mean, I've never really witnessed someone be so rude, disrespectful and mean as that guy, joke or not -- but he's the best, and there really isn't any doubt about it. The man is so consistent and smart, love him or hate him, hate phoenix? he's beaten some of the best players in the world without spending any meter using two characters. Hate Dorm? He's come back with just doom. The man deserves his win, as much as I wanted Infrit to win.

Another thing I'm really confused about.
SFxT was teams only, why was there a car as a reward for a teams game? exactly how do they share the car? they might not even live remotely close to each other. This just seems stupid to me. Did I misunderstand?

They need to schedule it differently so that it is not ending well after midnight on the East Coast.

Or maybe, host it on the east coast. Win-Win.

I don't get why it has to be Vegas. Maybe the spectacle, or some kind of validation.

I think any other state, minus NYC can host evo with the same if not more space and cheaper.

If only Chris G won Marvel and Bala made that comeback.

I don't know about Chris G (i don't like morrigan play), but Bala Losing created so much hype for KoF and is going to make the next evo much more hype. Basically before this evo KoF was safe for Bala, now is anyone's game.

A lot of results were posted on Twitter. I think Get Your Tournament was going nuts posting results from pools.

I was bummed that Bala couldn't make his comeback. It really looked like Bala was beginning to figure out his matchup against MAD KOF. But ended up caving MAD KOF's Kim at the end. Just needed one touch that he could convert into Takuma's HD combo...

if the schedule in the OP is the official one, then they simply didn't take the exhibitions and VF5 finals into account...KOF ran late, but not too late. the exhibitions are what really pushed it.

What numbers were they expecting?

I don't know what was shown on the stream, but I assumed what was on the side screens at the event was the stream feed.

Seems like they were not showing a lot of info.

We had a thread about improving streams before. Most everybody said having a news ticker with what was going on and what is coming up was needed.

I think they need that along with 2 set UPS to switch so they can do button checks of stream during the current match. To keep the pace up.

They wanted over 100k

Those cafeid button checks where insane

That‘s for another tournament.

Over 100k for SF4 easily. It got to 90 K last year on Ustream IIRC, this year SF4 didnt beat that if im not mistaken with Marvel having the highest view count at 98k

Stream 3 had some pretty great content the past two days. Thought it'd be cool to collect it all and tidy it up!

INDIE GAME PANEL - approx 1 hour. The very start doesn't seem to be archived.

---

CROSSCOUNTER EVO PREVIEW - Start at 2hrs for, I dunno, half an hour to an hour's worth of Ross, Gootecks and Zhi that was on a long loop.

CAPCOM PANEL - same link as above, 00h:30m to 02h:00m

---

ULTRACHEN TV w/ FANATIQ - This was awesome, really, really interesting. Starts at around 23minutes, lasts for about an hour and a half.

---

THE LEVEL|UP EXPERIENCE - starts at around 12 minutes. Haven't watched this yet. Hosted by MarkMan, chatting with Alex Valle, AJ and the behind the scenes crew. With bonus Offcast. Lasts an hour.

PLAYSTATION ALL-STARS - Chatting with Superbot. Starts at around 02h15m. Lasts ~90 minutes.

---

ASSIST ME! - Maximillian, Dr Doom, Phoenix, X-23 and Wesker Q&A. Starts with an intro film that was far too distracting as a thumbnail during Marvel yesterday. Skip to around 35 minutes in. 90 minutes long.

The ladies did not look bothered at all during the panel. Also there were so many proper awkward moments hahaha.

I'm not sure he should have offered his Doom to the wolves though. Hard tagging him in seemed like an actual mistake; looked like he tried for the Kubota escape.

That would make so much sense. I'm even more upset right now knowing that he didn't pull it off.

Part of that is because they ran so damn late on sunday night. People have work the next day, so staying up that late on the East Coast is killer.

The car is a prize for Capcom's tournament, which has nothing to do with Evo. Capcom's tournament is single player, no teams.

I think so. I also think when Dieminion lost lots of people werent gonna watch the rest..

Regarding the chanting by Mexican attendees, I think this is nothing more of cultural differences and the fact that this was the first time the EVO crowd experienced this kind of rooting by the mexican attendees. I'm completely aware that, if you look for the literal translation of the words being said, it will come of as rude and offensive. However, there's no intention to harm, harass or offend anyone with those chants, and it will be very difficult to convey this without actually experience this scenario in its original cultural environment. Like SolarKnight said, they Mexican crowd has only but the most upmost respect for the other players.

This kind of behavior is completely normal during soccer matches in Latin American and is part of the overall experience: crowds will throw insults at each other in a competitive yet playful manner.

I'm sure that the Mexican crowd was the most exited to attend the event, and one of the most thrilled to see someone representing their country doing a fantastic. You'll never see a jaded mexican crowd in an event like this.

I'm thrilled to see that Mexico finally has some real representation at EVO and I'm sure next year we are going to see some more strong competitors. Competition will only get better.

So next time that chants start, grab a sombrero and join the fun!

No offense bro, but in some parts of Europe, people make monkey noises when a black player gets possession of the ball, is that acceptable? For me, the gaming community has always been the most open and accepting group of people anywhere, as we ourselves know what it feels to be marginalized and ridiculed by the mainstream. I think it is the responsibility of all us to educate others that we don't accept bigotry, racism or hooliganism , we are different, we are better

I tuned out at the Tekken exhibition, and had to go to sleep before SFIV. Got to take EST into account if they want everyone watching the important stuff.

Probably.

The 2013 lineup is going to be interesting though. Persona 4? MK9 or Injustice? Soul Calibur or Tekken Tag? Dead or Alive? Sony Smash Bros? Will Evo have 5, 6 or maybe even 7 games?

SSF4 AE 2012
Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3
KOF XIII
Persona 4.
Virtua Fighter 5: Final Showdown

Everything else is to the side.

VF isnt going to get more entrants than TTT2. MK?

Who cares. Evo and all of these majors are going to start to make hard choices on what to include. VF5 is the better of all of the games mentioned. Shouldn't we start rewarding quality games now that our choices are so vast? WB wants an Injustice Tournament? They can fund it on the side.

Regarding the "evo" blank screen, I think they should come up with more information on those screens, even the ones between games. A simple "this game is coming soon" would've been enough. Even friends of mine that know what a double elimination tourney is were lost on those "squares" that were trying to represent brackets. Some arrows, something telling people where someone is coming from, or even if it's winners or losers would've been way better than what we got. I didn't like SF4 scheduling either, as an spectator I was already hravily drained after the KOF and UMVC3 finals and all I wanted to do was get some sleep, I guess the players were tired too, except for Infiltration who just seemed in a whole different level. Maybe he slept/practiced during KOF/UMVC3 finals? Still, great tournament, great experience.

That's a depressing thought. I really don't think that's the case. Hasn't EVO attendance been growing? Hasn't viewership been growing as well?

I mean, it really can only get so big considering the subject matter. I think anyone who is in to fighting games is able to watch it, and does for the most part. There's either a huge audience who would be into it that we can't crack, OR there's simply nobody else out there who hasn't checked it out yet.

What do you mean who cares? Of course entrants matter. More entrants = more money. Thats why BB got cut and MK made it this year.

For me, in terms of hype it was ST > KOF13 > UMVC3 > Floe > AE (missed the rest)

Unfortunately, I think all the AE matches were sweeps except for Gamerbee vs Xiao Hai

Champ made UMVC3 more interesting by playing the part of the heel and taking in the jeers. Combofiend, ChrisG and Infrit came so close but Champ backed up his words and pulled it out with some great play. Great to see Yipes on commentary for the finals too.

I felt the hd stream was worth it, only had trouble with it on thursday when 720p+ was lagging a bit but it worked fine from friday on.

@gyt did a great job delivering news on matches offstream

Best moment for me was the bone tiger uppercut on thursday.

Then what are you going to do? Run a 9 game tourney?

They will probably base their decision on how popular games are in other tournaments like they did this year. They will definitely make changes in the format for next year though. I'm just saying no way VF makes it on the main stage over TTT2 just because you like it more.

I think there's nothing about bigotry, racism or hooliganism in those chants, it's just a different way of cheering from another culture. It's like someone said when Fchamp and Combofiend were about to play: "they are teammates, they are friends, but right now and for the next 10 minutes they are enemies".

The smartest thing they could do for next year is place SFIV and MvC finals earlier in the day. It was a miscalculation, and I had to watch the grand finals between Infiltration and Gamerbee as I was falling asleep.

That's not how I want to watch EVO.

I enjoyed the semis far more. I was able to sit in my living room with my friends and watch it.

Probably.

Time-wise, they've shown they can't handle that many, on stream at least.

That's more like it. =)

As far as scheduling, they need to get stricter. No more overly long button checks. DQ anyone not ready to play. Hell, not just to losers. DQ them out of the tournament completely. Run that ship tight.
