EVO 2012 Thread 2 Because one thread wasnt enough to hold all the hype and the salt

Who cares. Evo and all of these majors are going to start to make hard choices on what to include. VF5 is the better of all of the games mentioned. Shouldn't we start rewarding quality games now that our choices are so vast? WB wants an Injustice Tournament? They can fund it on the side.

Evo shouldn't be about putting the "better" of all the games. It should be about what the community is actually into. VF has never had a large scene compared to Tekken and should't be put in over it. Netherrealm studio knows how to support their community and will keep their games in the spotlight and grow teir playerbase, or at least not have it shrink.

They will probably base their decision on how popular games are in other tournaments like they did this year. They will definitely make changes in the format for next year though. I'm just saying no way VF makes it on the main stage over TTT2 just because you like it more.

they're already going to move to a bigger venue for sure, so that's a good start.

ahahahaha what? The games that will be selected will be the games that most people want to see, if you want to start arguing that only the technically "best" games should be selected we would never have seen half of the games on main stage at Evo ever. It's a popularity and money contest, and in this particular case it should be. If game X is the most technical greatest fighter ever made but no one wants to watch it why the hell should it make it?

The smartest thing they could do for next year is place SFIV and MvC finals earlier in the day. It was a miscalculation, and I had to watch the grand finals between Infiltration and Gamerbee as I was falling asleep.

That's not how I want to watch EVO.

I enjoyed the semis far more. I was able to sit in my living room with my friends and watch it.

How many games were only Top 3/4? Everything but AE and Marvel (*edit* MK9 was top8 too?)? Perhaps only keep Top3/4 for the final day and run it down to that in days 1 and 2? That would shave an hour off at the end for sure.

So what if it's the better game? They aren't doing this for free and Namco is a much bigger sponsor than Sega so TTT2 will take precedence over VF5 (Tekken is also more popular than VF so it will have more entrants) . I expect VF5FS to be a side tourney game just like this year.

Mortal Kombat's definitely not returning.
I think it only had as many entrants as BlazBlue did last year.

Injusitce can take its place, but will they take another chance after Street Fighter X Tekken?

They should have just spaced out the finals in some way. It's hard to do. You only have 3 days to do it, and double elimination is time consuming.

I would kill to see melty blood on stream 2 next year, but because French Bread hasn't released the game in the states, there wouldn't be enough entrants.

SCV - another solid showing. I almost wish I had given the game a chance as I love how meter works and that Prryha(SP?) chick is hilarious.

SFxT - awful and pretty much the culmination of everything that is wrong with the game sans gems. 1v1 might have helped but I doubt it would have made much of a difference

MK - A little uneven but still pretty entertaining. I don't see it making EVO again as a main game though.

VF - loved seeing it on stream and we got some nice El Blaze and Shun play out of it. The grand finals weren't super competitive but it Fuudo is a beast.

KoF - no words, best top 8 of the night. Everyone played hard, it was exciting, and it delivered on all levels. The Kof chant was fairly touching as well. So glad to see the game getting the respect it deserves.

UMvC3 - Really solid top 8 although it seemed to be defined by mistakes and nerves at times. Still incredibly high level play and mad exciting to end. No patch needed

SSFIVAE2012 - Not a great end to the night, but there were a couple of solid matches and Infiltration was a beast. I'm really interested to see what happens to IV going forward. I don't the US scene is as invested in it as they were. Even the Japanese players seemed somewhat muted. The real passion seemed to come from Korea, China, and Taiwan. I think SFxT was really meant to take SF4's torch. Players just seem a little burned out on it.

Slept through the afternoon and felt really sad when I woke up.
Can't believe it's over, I wish it lasted a bit longer.
Sure, we could nitpick about all the stuff that could've been done better (I for one, would have liked that the top 16 for AE was streamed on the last day instead of top 8, it went by too fast), but I think it was amazing, and streaming almost everything for these past three days has been so fun for me, I really hope I'll go there next year.

I don't know any of these people playing or organizing tournaments (obviously, me being from Croatia and all), but I really love the FGC, every single one of those guys I see on the stream, there's something very special about this community, and I'm glad to be a part of it, even if it's indirectly (something I'd like to change in these coming years).

When's the next tournament coming up?

I think Marvel and AE finals, the two biggest game, should be on different days. It would be better for players who play both (like Justin) and it would be more focused. I think they should do top 16 till the end like CEO. More hype and less intermission.

Evo shouldn't be about putting the "better" of all the games.

Why not? Tougeki does it. If it was "what the scene wanted" you would see Gundam Vs. in there since has been at the top of the arcade rankings forever. Yet, you don't.

I think the sponsors would come regardless.

Injustice doesn't look like it's gonna take its place. That game looks really, really terrible, in a bad, 90s, off-brand PS1 or PC fighter sort of way. Sluggish gameplay, bad modeling, bad animation, spotty/awkward hit detection...

I got burned out by the end of MvC finals. I was more hyped for AE from the outset, but it was so late and MvC was so crazy that I was just burned out. The whole thing ended up being a little subdued on my side.

I mean, it really can only get so big considering the subject matter. I think anyone who is in to fighting games is able to watch it, and does for the most part. There's either a huge audience who would be into it that we can't crack, OR there's simply nobody else out there who hasn't checked it out yet.
As someone with a decent interest in fighting games who watches a few events a year, the commentary overall seems like it should be much more engaging/professional. If you follow the FGC I'm sure it's fine enough and I don't need those folks to start giving tutorials, but as someone that gets video games I should at least learn something let alone anyone who doesn't. Way too insular, they may have been friendly with everyone competing and what they're about but I had no idea half the time.

The VF combo was far and away the best from what I watched. A play-by-play guy, a color guy and smart, snap judgement analysis. They called it like a boxing match, instead of the "oh man.. that was crazy!!" way fans are more inclined to react.

Don't mean to hate on any respected folks that may have been up there, just my 2 cents as a relative outsider.

Realistic list factoring in company support and actual entrants:

SSFIVAE12 -> SSFIVAE12
UMvC3 -> UMvC3
KoF13 -> KoF13
MK -> Injustice
SC5 -> TTT2
SFxT -> P4A

Biased personal dream scenario:

SSFIVAE12 -> CvS2
UMvC3 -> Injustice
KoF13 -> Xuandou Zhiwang
MK -> MK
SC5 -> My Little Pony: Fighting is Magic (Main event)
SFxT -> SFxT

you and everyone there. so many one-sided wins at SFIVAE Finals made me think some of them just wanted to go to bed.

Agreed 100%. VF being pretty much perfect, it stands to reason they'd have perfect commentary as well. That, and VF being really good to call.

They should probably start earlier in the day. It doesn't help that AE started well after midnight CST Monday morning when people have to be at work at 8-9 AM. Also cut down on some of the extra stuff like the upcoming game presentations. The TTT2 stuff before Marvel last night went on far past its welcome. I understand that it's probably to fill in the time during waits, but I'm sure something can be done to improve the flow between games. Maybe alternating screens so games can be prepared while another finishes up?

And that's really not fair. The semis for AE were more hype, and there's something seriously wrong with scheduling if that's the case.

Starting the finals at 10 was a mistake. They should have started earlier, so they could finish earlier. It benefits the viewers, and the players.

Like Third Strike, SF IV and MK when they were announced and in the end they all made it out for EVO. It's almost impossible for Injustice not make it to Evo, the entire MK community will play it and all the others that want something new. At least for one year it WILL be there.

sucked worse for the East coast. it was 3AM when it was over. now i'm tired as fuck at work...lol

james chen and magus1234 talk too goddamn much.

and yes, overall the presentation needs some work. the cross-counter segments looked pretty nice, they need to bring some of that polish to the live show.

also, why did they get rid of the dual-setup? button checks are the worst.

I'd be surprised if it even got SFxT treatment like that...the cutscenes alone are enough to make me raise an eyebrow, but the regular game play was enough to make me not care about ever seeing the game again. I'm not saying my opinion is the right one, but if it's as bad as I think it is, MK players will realize it pretty soon after release and not move from MK to Injustice.

At the very least, it looks well below MK, in terms of the fighting engine.

Yeah MK only had half the entrants it did last year so I don't see it coming back. Injustice will probably take its place next year, and a lot of those guys will probably do their own MK9 side tournament.

Yeah and no games presentations during quarter finals please. I mean wtf were they thinking with showing Sony All Stars presentation while there were matches like Daigo vs Latif going on. This is not the way you make people interested in your game, this is the way you make them hate it.

So I haven't been following P4A at all really, do people think it really has a chance at making Evo next year? Serious question, I'm honestly curious about the game but had written it off from making Evo as seeming to niche/anime/whatever.

i agree, Yipes and Seth finally come back to commentate and they just kept going on and on. Magus also kept bitching about what fighters suck over and over.

i think my favorite bit was this:

chen: "random headbutt by PR Balrog"
killian: "brilliant read on the headbutt by PR Balrog!"

or sometihng to that effect. i don't know tier lists, footsies, zoning, or how to FADC properly, but when seth killian is sitting next to you on the mic, shut the fuck up. adam sessler was more entertaining to listen to.

I'm sure PerfectLegend will be happy. He can be the undisputed champion of MK9 forever and ever now.

It's the biggest fighting game in Japan right now (and many are saying it's better than BB)

This discussion will be much more informed after we see the bracket turnout for some of the majors between now and the end of the year.

It's coming out at the right time to garner support for more or less a year before evo lineups are decided again and given the waning support for games like MK9 and SFxT it certainly has a shot I think. Arc Sys fighters are no strangers to Evo and P4A has the benefit of being a widely recognized franchise before its actual release (in comparison to BlazBlue which was a completely new IP). We'll see.
