EVO 2012 Thread 2 Because one thread wasnt enough to hold all the hype and the salt

My answer to your question given these issues is that more attacks need to have frame advantage on block so that the person on the offensive has better options..

I do agree that DoA needs to redo offensive, but I really feel more like they're missing a punishment class (slightly unsafe/jab punishable) and it is getting hard to balance the strikes as result. As you've noted throwing is the best and sometimes only punishment. Slow down the inescapable throws and then the offense can be brought back in line with SC/VF/etc instead of jumping straight from safe to 40-70 points of guaranteed damage. Something along the lines of stun moves disdvantage on block, launches on stun jab punish, natural launcher throw punishable.

so just to make sure, Spooky is done streaming after EVO right?

I wasn't paying that much attention, but he doesn't like TACs, which is a legitimate complaint. Also X-factor and 1-touch kill combos.

There's more to this obsession of hatred over MVC3 lol.

I think the pain after realizing this wasn't MVC2 2.0 is too much for him or something....

But forreal, I'm pretty sure Sanford could be godlike at UMVC3 if he wanted to.....but oh well.

TACs are a legitimate mechanic idea gone wrong. What began as an alternative way of tagging in your teammates has led to stylish combos and infinites.

They're not perfect, but I don't mind them all that much.

I kinda like TACs because they add some element of real mind games, which I feel are kinda de-emphasized in Marvel 3. There definitely needs to be a much greater penalty for a failed TAC attempt though.

Even without the infinites they're dumb. Tag out your character for free if you get it right + some other perk (gain a bar, take away a bar, extra damage)

TACs aren't mind games, they are rock/paper/scissors. They marginalize actual resets or oki set ups because the risk/ratio of a TAC is too good in comparison. Since the discovery of the infinites there will eventually be a point where there would be no point in practicing legit resets when you can just TAC into infinite for insane meter gain and character death.

The resets/mix ups are the mind games of Marvel and there are so many ways to get in someone's head and mind fuck them. Best way to deal with TACs is the Viscant way, look at the guy's stick when he is doing a combo on you and then try to react to it. It's better then blind guessing anyway.

TACs are retarded. you can't allow somebody to potentially build 3 or 4 freaking meters in a combo without much risk. not when hypers do so much damage and many characters have level 3's. you should only be allowed one TAC and that's it.

Is it just me or is Zhi annoying as all fuck?

I find myself bothered constantly by his videos on CC – the intros are way too fucking long and way too self-indulgent. He seems like a fun person to be around and the initial CC Asia videos were great but its pretty much just Zhi wanking off to himself these days.

His Evo interviews with the Japanese players were terrible.

EVO this year showed mind games are finally becoming prevalent in Marvel on a whole other level. See: Chris G vs. FChamp set.

There is a mind games element to them, but considering how easily a random guess can equate to a thought out counter, it's kind of devalued.

Side note: that one time Combo's Nova scooped up Champ's Phoenix was insane. I forget which but he had an assist to keep her on lockdown as she got snapped in, as Combofiend wildly danced around dashing up and down over and over and then BAM SCOOP. FChamp got mindfucked into getting grabbed. That shit looked so dirty.

That was more like mind game across the span of months. They had been using data they had collected over their previous encounters to forge to near perfect strategies to counter each other.

A more apt example of mind game is what Zak Bennet does with his Firebrand team. You get scooped by Firebrand, you eat a mix up or a snap back into more mix ups until you finally lose the match because you can't handle the vortex. Eventually he trains you to look for a particular mix up and then switches it up after you have been trained for more mind fuck. Firebrand gets into your head and the next time you touch him, you X factor to kill him instantly. Then you lose to Dorm chip because you wasted your X factor too early. And of course you are too busy being mind fucked to realize that snapping in Ammy and killing her first solves most of the problems in that team but again... mind games.

Let's not forget the ridiculous amount of off game mind games that FChamp was playing especially with Combofiend and Infrit.

So will TACs kill Marvel?
Not really but it will negatively impact high level Marvel play.

If you could fucking punish them yeah.
Losing 50-350k damage for a 66% chance to kill / gain 3 bars is stupid.

Way too little risk for giant reward.

So will TACs kill Marvel?
No.. But over time they will take their toll on the game as stuff becomes more prevalent. That much I am confident in. When you begin seeing so called swag combos/infinites everywhere as the norm, if we reach that point, I'm not sure what peoples opinions will be. But it's a fear I have.

I don't think people's execution will let us get to that point though.

I like Zhi but I can see why his interaction with the Japanese might bother people. His questions and comments can seem rude.

TACs are mindgames now? It's practically a quick time event rock-paper-scissors in the middle of an air combo, DBZ Budokai's been doing that shit for ages.

This is why I said there should be a greater penalty for failing one. It isn't just rock/paper/scissors either. It's RPS with a different reward attached to each option. That's where the mind game comes in. Or should, anyway.

Marvel 3 is still too much about putting your opponent in as many "guess the right direction to block or die" situations as possible for my liking. I like that TACs at least encourage players to make good reads on their opponents.

Keep in mind, I'm not defending TACs in their current state. It's way too much reward for too little risk, but the idea is neat and if properly implemented would make UMvC3 a lot more interesting.

I hate the way TAC's are currently implemented. I like the idea of having an alt way of tagging your next guy in. I just think the choice they made is not the best way to handle it.

Well, except the super jump L to bait a TAC counter resets. lol
That's more like punishing bad habits. Everyone just mashes on S and a direction when they are getting comboed, this reset basically punishes the mashing. Probably the only decent thing to have come out of TACs.
