Did some tests with this wonderful little LCD sub-sampling resize plugin for Paint.net.

It basically does same thing to images what clear type does for fonts. (Gives sharper looking image by using the knowledge how 'sub-pixels/colours' on LCD are arranged.)

Currently this plugin reduces image size to half horizontally to get the effect.
So what I did with these test images is scaled images first to 1920x544 and then scaled them to 960x544 either using normal scaler or this one..

Images should NOT be JPG compressed as it reduces the effect. (JPG does not compress color information in full resolution.)

Normal first and then the lcd-subsampled.

So, basic idea is to get that nice little Vita screen to look even better..

Wow, that is a really nice difference, very sharp looking. Good to know that this effect also works on the Vita. Should work very well for B/W line-art as well.

They’re kind of in the same style as the old ones, though they still feel fresh.

I’ve been messing with a variety of shapes and ended up using this kind of arrow-like shape. The category-labels are placed a bit different this time around, so that you have more room for your apps and games.

Feel free to use and/or change these up with your own backgrounds/labels.

To clarify: It only supports transparency off/on. So you can't make one part darker than another for example.

Also the intersection between the dynamic background and the overlay often looks bad.
