I can't think of a way for Nolan Riddler to work without either copying the Joker or making a smaller, more personal film.

Not that there's anything wrong with a smaller film, but it isn't right for a conclusion. Batman has a lot of toys accumulated over the course of these films; it should make sense that he has a threat sufficient to use them. Bane and his mercs seem well-suited for this purpose.

Nah. This is the final act. This is the epic conclusion. I would have loved to see Riddler, but he's not a final villain. What Bane does in TDKR to Batman and Gotham....yeah, they made the right choice.

Yep. I wasn't a fan of the choice at first, or the look in that first picture. I've grown to love what I've seen so far. He looks like a fucking monster, which I think is awesome.

In the post-Nolan era, if they (hopefully) go towards a more comic booky take on Bats ala Raimi's Spider-Man, I'd LOVE to see a Hugo Strange or Black Mask as villain movie.

I'd love it, but it would never receive the widespread praise that Nolan has gotten. It's the unfortunate reality of superhero movies.

Right but the BEST Batman moments are the ones where the tools can't help him. That's the beauty of the Riddler. He tests that element of Batman.

- Joker tests his moral convictions because he can't be predicted.
- Bane is the ultimate physical test.
- Catwoman is usually a villain who blurs Batmans line between good and evil and is good for bringing him too close to sympathizing. She's typically judged on an action by action basis and Bruce needs to make sure to hold her accountable. Her short time in Batman Inc. was priceless. The scene afterwards was awesome.
- Penguin is typically another stand in for the mob.
- Two-face is supposed to warn him of what he can become if something goes wrong.
- Riddler is the one who tests his ANALYTICAL ability. He would have been a great villain for this movie.

Where that leave Mr. Freeze?

God no! If they revert back to comic booky Batman I am out! Nolan has shown how it needs to be done!

they will, i can't imagine a dark and brooding Nolan-batman in a Justice League movie and I can't imagine WB not doing a JL-movie after Avengers dominating the boxoffices worldwide.

Bunch of shit, because you're only going to compare it unfavourably to Nolan's films.

I would like them to keep it serious and brooding and dark but also have the fantastical. Play it straight when Bats is fighting Clayface or Man-Bat.

You can't keep making morose Batman movies forever. Not to mention that I think the absolute worst thing they could do post-Nolan is make Batman movies in the vein of Nolan but not made by Nolan. I think they should go in a completely new direction. Maybe something like I said, or maybe a Batman Beyond-esque take, or whatever.

Just go in a new direction, for gods sake.

I don't know Spiderman 2 and Iron Man and The Avengers were all met with great praise, and they all lean on the much lighter side.

They don't get the same type of recognition Nolan has. Out of that list the only movie I'd consider on the same level as any of Nolan's movies in terms of quality is Iron Man though.

I'm personally of the opinion that Raimi's movies got judged on a less harsh scale due to the failures of superhero movies in the past, but the modern hero movies have pretty much made them par for the course.

I hate Marvel as a general rule, but the original Iron Man is fantastic.

I'd be extremely happy if they stopped making live action Batman for years but I don't see that happening. Are the animated series as good as old TAS nowadays?

The music during Bruce and Selina's dance reminds me of those scenes where Bond meets Bond Girl for the first time at the villain's house party.

my dream Batman movie is still a Paul Verhoeven directed The Dark Knight Returns.

I still want a TDKReturns in 20 years with white hair Oldman, grey hair Bale, recast Joker and returning Nolan. Still want it, even if Batman dies. Zombies are all the rage innit.

Realistically, I think the direction they have to go is darker. Make it feel more akin to the comics with Batman's super genius intellect and gadgets, but make the story and look of Gotham dark/gothic as all hell. I think a good template for that "feel" would actually be the concept art for The Joker:

Not if done by Verhoeven. The social commentary/satire is ripe for the picking in that book, which is 110% in Verhoeven's wheelhouse.

It's just that Rises seems to be taking some plot elements from that book already.

Eventually down the road? Sure, why not?

The first new Bat film after Rises, though? Nah.

I like the score but there's only a couple of standout tracks to me. I dunno, I think Zimmer is very overrated sometimes. It seems like most of the good music in the Nolan films were from Newton Howard.

Zimmer just seems to mostly write very random, "blargh" kind of music that's just really loud and powerful instead of compelling. I think it will go along with the film better than it does as a standalone listening experience.
