The Giant Bomb Quick Look Thread 2

okay i literally thought during that ql "this looks like a korean f2p game from 2005" and then I looked up the original dungeon fighter and it totally is exactly from that time and place

Korean online games always have disproportionally good music. I still have RO installed mostly because of the music folder. As cheesy as it is I kinda liked the music in that Quick Look.

Im only 17 minutes into the QL, I hope they get to the part of town where a merchant shouts "YEH GOTTA THPEND MONEY TO MAKESH MONEY" at you the entire fucking time.
EDIT- Oh the town stuff is way dumbed down in this version. Ending was awesome though

So I watched the Deadly Creatures QL again because it's been a while, and I've decided that survival horror developers have missed the boat.

How is there not a spider/scorpion/rat/lizard/bug themed survival horror game? And no I'm not talking about Escape from Bug Island because giant versions are far less creepy. How is there not a game where your character wakes up, feels something funny on his feet, turns the light on AND THE GROUND IS MADE OF SPIDERS

I dont know how much that game's scares would actually work unless it had some wacky peripheral that let you feel the bugs on you.

This is why I like Deadly Creatures, the bug animations are good and creepy if you hate bugs. They did some of this in UC3 (and probably more I'm forgetting) but it wasn't really horror.

You should watch the Deadly Creatures QL because it freaks Jeff the fuck out without a peripheral

Well yeah but you're pretty up close in that game most of the time. Stuff is always super freaky upclose, hell for a while I could barely scroll through a large image of hatchetfish when the same image scaled down didnt bother me at all.

Like he even says its the leg animation that gets to him the most. Im imagining it in my head, and I just dont think you're gonna get the full impact of that if you're mostly looking at them from a person's perspective (or a camera's perspective focused on a person) in a videogame. Especially if you're going to need enough to cover a floor, like I dont know how good those would look.

maybe if your character was a child so you'd be closer to the ground and the game was first person
and it starts with you waking, and opening your eyes as a spider darts across your pillow

Okay... What if you're playing a roach in first person, and it's still survival horror.

Am I the only one who's getting tired of the "It looks bad like a Free 2 play game" line?

Not that F2P games are necessarly the highest standard of quality but they've come a looooong way in the last couple of years. Nowadays you can find F2P games that are actually better (gameplay wise and technical side too) than full paid games.

I mean...in the end there's shitty games in every category.

Yeah they do! The Dungeon Fighter music is amazing. I'd always been meaning to give the game a shot, and this new release finally got me to try it. Ended up downloading it on Steam too.

It looked like Vinny's character was too tall to actually connect the shooting attacks without aiming at the ground.

Agreed.

Like I said in the whatcha been playin thread, I've basically been deep into Vindictus and Blacklight:Retribution recently. They're both tons of fun. Also, Tribes is amazing.

So, I had absolutely nothing to do yesterday, and I ended up watching the second half of the TNT with the Tetris Battle Gaiden in it. I figured it was time to actually watch the SNES party videos, and so I did. I watched all three parts yesterday.

It was worth it.

Ben was so close on ActRaiser...

Also, that Home Alone stuff that Jeff did, hahahahahaha

Having played a few hours I can say Dungeon Fighter Live is actually good fun. Admittedly it's a bit slow to get going, and Normal difficulty (which you have to play) is pretty dull.

Once you get into the higher difficulty for areas and unlock access to the crazy amount of RPG stuff though it's really cool. Been really enjoying accessing new powers, and there's an absolutely insane amount of loot. Then there's crafting and a bunch of other stuff on top of that.

Haven't watched the Quick Look, so don't know how far they got but it's definitely a game that doesn't show well during the first 20 mins or so, since you repeat stuff a lot and the Normal difficulty enemies barely have any AI.

Maybe it should be changed to "looks like a bad F2P game". There's been a healthy trend of quality F2P games lately, but the bad ones are still their own special brand of terrible.

Anyone else watch QLs for specific games in order to motivate them to play those games? For example, right now skyrim and GT5 are the active games in rotation. Yet I can't get myself to sit down and play them (note: I actually do want to play them). I'm planning on going back and watching the skyrim QL to get myself in the mood.

I use QLs in this manner fairly often.

More often I go back and watch them after I've started playing a game (if I'm LTTP) just to see what their impressions were at the time.

I actually want them to do a Corpse Party Quick Look to help me decide whether I should finally buy it. Plus I'm sure watching Brad/Vinny or Vinny/Jeff play that game would be great to watch.

Honestly I thought we'd got over these pretentious style over substance indie games a few years ago. But here we are.

There is so much more to Dyad than the visuals. The game itself is an awesome psychedelic racing game, and as you get through the game it gets progressively harder and harder. Its totally a real game, and not just a bunch of trippy colours.

How is this style over substance when the game is very clearly skill and highscore based? It's almost like saying Tetris is style over substance.

Really? From what I'm seeing it looks like a visualizer masquerading as a videogame.

It does look like that at first glance, i'll admit. But its actually a pretty awesome game. The colour matching gameplay and boost mechanics make it just so much fun to play. Also, chasing scores on the leaderboards is kind of addictive...

I've just watched Deathsmiles X2 QL and I lost it when Vinny said - "Jeff, Merry Christmas". I laughed like I haven't in quite some time.

So is it like Audiosurf then?
