Are any of these options from Xoticpc on the NP9170 worth paying attention to, or is it all mostly insignificant stuff?

  • COPPER COOLING UPGRADE - Extra Cooling Copper Heatsinks Applied to the Heatsink/Heatpipes (XPC Service)
  • - IC Diamond Thermal Compound - CPU + GPU
  • Full Size Black Aluminum Notebook Cooler - Dual Fans - USB Powered (For up to 17" Laptops)
  • YES - Redline Boost™ Overclock My System (Operating System Required) (XPC Service)
  • Yes, Redline Boost My Operating System (Operating System Required) (XPC Service)
I have no idea how important extra cooling is on a laptop like this and while in most situations, I would completely overlook the "redline boost" stuff, him being in the army means I won't be able to do any sort of tweaks or config or overclockin stuff to help out.

A big hell no to all of that. It's laughable, asking $79 for the copper, when I buy my own on eBay for less than $5 a pack. And this Redline Boost(tm) is just a simple, everyday GPU overclock, which any idiot could do in 5 minutes.
I know this may not be exactly the right thread for this, but I'm gonna try!

I recently got an ASUS laptop with 17in 1080p, 16GB ram, 2.3 i7-3610QM quad core, and a 660m. I don't know a lot about computers, but my friend told me that getting it for less than a grand was a good fucking deal.

Anyways, everything seems to run fine on it, except Witcher 2. Is this a game issue or a hardware issue. I just wanted to make sure I got my money's worth.

I'm sorry, could you be a lot more detailed, please?

It just runs at a 30ish frame rate with the lowest settings.

Basically, what I'm asking, was this worth the $900 that I paid for it? I'm pretty sure I just need to mess with the settings of the game.

That's a crazy good deal for $900.

And that's set at 1080p? My 6970M is 20% faster than the GTX 660M, and I run Witcher 2 @ 1080p with nearly everything on Ultra, except Ubersampling.

The laptop isn't on Power Saver, is it?

Okay, cool. Yeah, amazon messed up a really imporant order for me and I got some big credits, plus it was on sale. I'll toy with the settings then and make sure it's on the proper power mode.

Do I need to mess with overclocking anything or is where it's at good enough for most stuff?

I just ordered my sager NP9150 yesterday for college it should be coming within a week or so. So can any owners of this model let me know what you think of this configuration and how it's working for you? Thanks!

Take the 2yr warranty. You just spent 2.5k, so a final $79 for an extra year is nothing and responsible. Notebooks take dumps the day after year one is up, just for the lulz.

The GTX 660M can play everything out, at 1080p. I'm not sure why your Witcher performance is so abysmal.

As far as overclock it, why not? You might as well squeeze out as much performance as possible. MSI Afterburner is the go to program these days, I hear.

Could someone help me out with this.. When I was playing Shogun 2 earlier I had access to ultra settings with 1 gig of video memory. Now when I load it up it only says I have 535 mb of video memory. Wtf?! Im a PC newb so I can post my specs if that would help figure out the problem.

OK, narrowed down the specs for my friend's NP9170. I don't know what the price will be yet as I'm waiting to hear back from them as far as the details for a military discount + whatever other discounts they offer, but the base price is $2,907

Yeah what are your specs? And are you now getting lower performance?

Upgrading to one of the better wireless cards will pay dividends. Other than that, it looks good.

And your welcome. Gaming laptops are one of my hobbies, so I enjoy this.

I got the student back to school deal which includes a free $200 gift card and I signed up for Dell Advantage which is free and gives you 5% of what you spend back on a gift card, so about $270 in gift cards. They also upgraded me to next business day shipping for free. $1740 out the door which includes shipping and tax. I'm happy.

Yeah what are your specs? And are you now getting lower performance?

Thanks for helping. Before i start I should mention that my laptop has the Nvidia Optimus. And not only that.. But I googled it and multiple users have been saying they have problems running games cause it can't differentiate which GPU to use? Something like that. Just know ahead of time that I'm a newb like I've said before. So this may be more simple than I'm making it out to be. Lol. But anyway..

Specs (I'll type out what it says on the paper I have):
Windows 7 Professional 64 OEM
Intel i7 2670QM Processor 2.2GHz
8GB DDR3 1600 SO Vengeance Memory
500GB SATA 5400 RPM 2.5" Hard Drive
Nvidia 650m 1GB
And I'll also note that I have ESET antivirus if that could help solve the problem

To answer your question.. Yeah my performance was lowered. The very first time I loaded up Shogun 2. No problems. It read my Nvidia card rather than the integrated graphics. Everything was able to be put on Ultra. And I remember that it said video memory available at about 900 mb. Now that I load it up it says my video memory has been pretty much cut in half at like 530 mb BUT it's still reading my Nvidia card (or say it displays). It's quite frustrating. I've looked online everywhere and can't find a solution. If the sticker on my laptop says 1GB 650m then I'd assume that when I play games. Not 530mb or whatever. Please GAF. Any suggestions would be appreciated. I'm getting desperate and wondering if my hardware somehow screwed up cause I KNOW I ran the game on ultra but now I can't :/

Is it the game itself?
Or is it this stupid Nvidia Optimus?

Show me your ways GAF.

It seems that Nvidia's mobile Kepler is actually made of pure win. Pure distilled 100% unadulterated win.

I've been watching developments in this thread:
http://forum.notebookreview.com/sony/677079-sony-vaio-s-bios-mod-gt640m-le.html

There are apparently crazy awesome hacker types who modify laptop BIOSes to unlock overclocking caps on mobile GPUs. Someone modded the BIOS for the 2012 Sony VAIO S series laptops to allow the Geforce GT 640M LE, which normally runs at 500 mhz, to run at 950 mhz. Normally with the stock Sony BIOS you can only OC it to 540 mhz.

I'm going to flash this crazy awesome BIOS on my S15 and see what happens. The few crazy awesome people in that thread who already tried it are getting 3DMark 11 scores similar to a stock GT 650M.

For our Canadian members, how does this sound?

15.6" 1920x1080 (not the usual crappy Ideapad 1366x768 screens?)
i7 3610
6GB DDR3 (a little low compared to high end laptops, but how cheap is DDR3 nowadays)
750gb HD, USB3

and the kicker?
660m w/2GB GDDR5

$979.

How do they do it?

Edit: wait, that second NCIX link has a 1366 screen, the amazon link says 1080p. Which one is correct? =\
(I was just about to pull the trigger)

Edit #2: if you don't mind getting it from lesser-known sources, I see it as low as $820!!
http://www.shopbot.ca/pp-lenovo-ideapad-y580-i7-3610qm-lenovo-price-379012.html

Edit #3: some of those are definitely different SKUs based on the Y580. The Amazon one seems like the best deal for the money, based on the 1920x1080 screen.

Of note: I received the laptop from Amazon and it was the 1366x768 screen :(

Not sure what to do with it at this point.

So I got my Retina MacBook Pro in a few days ago, and SWEET JESUS.

Performance:
I haven't done proper benchmarks just yet since I just got the thing, but so far, it runs games INCREDIBLY well. Far beyond expected. I was initially hoping that I'd be able to just play games at a reasonable resolution (1440x900 perhaps?) with medium settings, but it's definitely outperforming all expectations.

It's handling games like BioShock and all of Valve's stuff at full 2880x1800 at 60fps. I don't have a ton of modern games, but it doesn't even flinch at anything in my collection so far. The games that it doesn't run at full resolution, it usually is fine when I bring it down to 1080p. The nice thing is that the lower resolutions still look FANTASTIC on this screen, since the pixels are too small to notice any blurring/scaling. It's waaaaay better than anticipated.

Perhaps the most impressive thing to me is how it absolutely rocks the Dolphin emulator. GameCube games and more simple games, like NSMBWii, run at full 60fps at 2880x1800, which is just gorgeous. Other games, like Xenoblade, run at a full framerate at smaller resolutions, like 1080p. The only game I'm having trouble running at a stable framerate is Galaxy 2, but I'm told that's mostly because of the emulator.

Some nice side notes about the laptop is how incredibly well-designed the hardware is. I've never owned a Mac before (I'm a total PC guy), so I'm used to HP/Toshiba/Acer/ASUS machines. My last laptop was an HP Envy (which borrows a lot of its design from the MacBook), and that machine was a freaking turd.

This machine, on the other hand, feels so incredibly sturdy. It's remarkably thin. It doesn't get hot anywhere where your hands may rest. The trackpad is disgustingly good. Simple things, like the power adapter, are just super nice (and I imagine typical Mac users take that for granted). But really, it's just so nice that a laptop this powerful can be so thin and light. Blows my mind.

BUT, of course, the design doesn't come cheap. The screen is incredible, and everything is so well put together, but you're certainly paying for those luxuries. In total, this was right around the $3000 mark.

If you're a student trying to save money, it might not be the most responsible purchase. =P That being said, if you're looking for a solid piece of equipment with incredible specs, don't hesitate buying this if you can afford it. The screen, alone, is something else. Looks and runs beautifully in both OS X (lol), and Windows.

Highly recommended.

Does anyone else have any experience with the Y580? I'm strongly considering pulling the trigger on the configuration on the Microsoft Store for $1,199 (i7-3610QM, 2 GB 660 M, 1080p monitor, 8 GB RAM, 750 GB HDD + 32 GB SSD). It'll be used as my main machine, hooked up to a monitor, KB/M and/or my TV at home, and it will be used to study on campus at school.

It seems like a really nice machine, but I just would like some hands on reassurance if possible.

Send that shit back. Never accept less than what you paid for, and what they advertised.

Check out the NBR Lenovo forum.

So, I can purchase the heatsinks and place them on top of the existing one?
I did a re-paste yesterday, it lowered mt tempts by 4c or so.

I've done the heatsink thing in my NP8170, and it only affects temperatures by a few degrees. An XoticPC rep on NBR states as much also.

Essentially, I wouldn't even bother.

Anyone here actually own a Falcon Northwest laptop? Is it worth the crazy dough? I drool everytime I see one on the website, but the price makes me cough blood.

Anyone got any good recommendations for a laptop if, say, I'm looking for one that has at least 4 to 6 GB of RAM and a decent enough processor to run most games? (Not max settings or anything). I need something pretty... affordable, also planning to maybe use it for college work too. So something around the $400-$700 price range. I was looking at Sony Vaio but I'm not sure if that's a good choice... or if there's cheaper laptops out there that accomplish the same thing.

Quick question: could anyone advise me on the difference between standard Corsair/"Value Select" and their more expensive "Vengeance" line? I'm looking to upgrade my 2011 MBP to 16GB (it takes 1333MHz DDR3 SO-DIMMS), and can get the standard 1333MHz Corsair RAM (which is labelled "Value Select" in some of the photos on Amazon) for about €90, or the Vengeance 1600MHz for €120. There's also the "Mac Memory" line for about €100, but I strongly suspect that's just their standard stuff re-labelled. The Vengeance is almost certainly overkill, but I just want to know if the Value Select line is particularly low-quality before I order it.

I have a friend who is looking to purchase a laptop able to play GW2 at good settings with a budget of $500-550.

I'm no laptop supporter, but he tells me it's got to be a laptop, so, GAF, what can you get with $550?

Let's say I want to go with a 670M... is there any reason I should pick the Sager 9150 over the 9130? It seems like it's 200$ more for only a backlit keyboard.

I doubt you can get a good laptop with a graphics card at that price...but I'm not an expert. Although GW2 can run on integrated graphics

For $550 you can get a bottom-of-the-barrel junk tier laptop. Seriously.

GW2 isn't even out yet, no one will know what it really requires until it hits open beta. If it's poorly optimized it won't run well on anything, even God-tier desktops.

I just want an ultrabook that can play new games at decent settings!

I believe part of the Ultrabook spec is that the laptop has to be <0.5" thick, comparable to MacBook Air. The laws of physics dictate that you're going to have a hell of a time fitting a discrete GPU into a chassis of that size without it overheating. The Asus Zenbook Prime UX32 series have an Nvidia GT 620M, the bottom tier of Nvidia discrete mobile GPUs and that thing hits 90C while gaming. A more powerful GPU wouldn't even be able to run at 3D clocks for a few minutes before throttling back.

Sony VAIO S15 (2012)

s_family_galleryTab_1.jpg

Intel Core i7-3612QM (2.1ghz, Turbo Boost up to 3.1ghz)
8 GB DDR3-1333 (4 GB soldered onto motherboard, 1x4 GB SO-DIMM)
Nvidia GeForce GT 640M LE w/2 GB DDR3 (see below)
256 GB Samsung 830 series SSD (replaced stock 500 GB HDD)
15.5" 1920x1080p IPS display
Blu-ray reader/DVD+CD burner slot-loading optical drive
720p webcam
Win7 Pro x64

For anyone who cares about connectors:
2x USB 3.0
1x USB 2.0 "Charge" port (actively charges devices through USB even when laptop is off!)
HDMI
VGA
SD card slot
Memory Stick Pro Duo slot (because it's Sony, LOL)
microphone jack
headphone jack

This laptop is <1" thick with the lid closed and weighs 4.4 lbs. The laptop itself looks very classy and stylish, with a conservative matte black finish. You can also get the laptop in silver and white. The shell is made of rigid magnesium alloy except a plastic strip at the top of the lid where the wireless antennas are housed. The inner frame around the screen and the palm rests are aluminum. Magnesium alloy is a popular component in laptops even though aluminum is cheaper because of it's rigidity, so this laptop exhibits absolutely no flex when picked up or prodded, except in the area of the backlit keyboard. The screen is extremely thin and does flex when bent or opened at the corners, though this is apparently an intentional design decision by Sony since a screen this thin would be too brittle if made rigid.

But enough about the laptop itself. This is GAF so I know you guys want to hear about performance in games. It's important to understand that this laptop's GeForce GT 640M LE has a stock clock of 500/900. If you want what I have, well first you would need to buy this laptop. But then you'll need to do what I did and it will almost certainly void your warranty. If you do buy this laptop, you'll need to go here to download the hacked BIOS for the laptop. This BIOS simply modifies the GPU's default clocks. I'm using the 1000 BIOS that sets the GPU clock to 1000/1000.

Huhuhu~

Yes, I said 1000 mhz GPU clock. Remember, the stock clock is 500 mhz!

Here's how it looks after the mod:
gpuz.jpg

So, what do the benchmarks say after this BIOS hack?

Not bad, scoring as well as a stock GT 650M here. For comparison purposes, the average score of stock GT 640M LE is around ~P1300 3Dmark 11's.

Metro 2033:

I remember when this game first came out and it used to crush the best desktop GPUs at the time. Now a laptop GPU can run it in DX11 mode. How times have changed.

Run #1- DX10 1920x1080 AA=No AA, 32 bit test, Quality: High ~~ Last Average FPS: 28.39

The great granddaddy of all DX10 benchmarks. Running in 32-bit mode because the Steam version of Crysis doesn't come with the 64-bit executable. Derp.

Diablo III:

I can't exactly benchmark this. Well, loading the game up and running around seemed okay. With 1080p resolution, all settings maxed, AA enabled in game menu, I was getting a pretty solid 40-45 fps doing a quick test run of the first part of Act III where you're running around killing mob packs and lighting the signal beacons. I guess that's pretty okay for a laptop GPU these days and it matches results I've seen elsewhere on the Internet for D3 and a GT 650M with DDR3, not GDDR5.

Summary:

The basic Sony VAIO S15 is already a pretty good laptop with light gaming capability, but the BIOS hack which enables a ridiculous GPU clock really turns this laptop into a really nice gaming laptop which is also slim and light so you can take your games anywhere. The laptop itself is built very well, includes a gorgeous 1080p IPS screen, and has a keyboard which is actually nice to type on. I wrote this entire post on the laptop's keyboard without any problems. The touchpad on this laptop is pretty decent too as clickpads go, I can actually use it without wanting to kill myself and as PC clickpads go that's practically glowing praise. At 1/3 the price of a Retina MacBook Pro I feel like I made out like a bandit in terms of price/performance and sheer value for dollar.

Final outlay looked like this:
$1,241 + free PS3 + free Express shipping for Customized laptop
- $250 (sold the PS3)
- $140 in Sony Rewards points I've had laying around
+ $110 tax
+ $23 (4 GB DDR-1333 SO-DIMM from Newegg)
+ $190 (Samsung SSD bought during Newegg sale)
= $1,174

I've been thoroughly miserable with my £2000+ Vaio Z from a couple of years ago. It's the most expensive yet annoying computer I've ever owned. Sony limit the graphics card drivers to its own, and the OS freezes up intermittently.

I don't think I'd buy another Vaio laptop, sadly. :/

I had AMD Switchable Graphics on my Thinkpad T400. I know how you suffer, for I have suffered the same way. In 3 years of ownership, Lenovo released a total of 3 driver updates for it, the last one in mid-2011. It's a good thing I never played games on that thing.

I don't know anything about OS freezes. Have you tried a clean install of Windows without all the default Sony bloatware?

I've tried a bunch of times to get custom graphics drivers going, and it usually involves about an hour of messing about and getting nothing more than black screen or 640x480 default output. :/ You're probably right, I should reformat and reinstall, I just hate the process of reregistering my software.

There's something amiss when my 6 year old imac runs PC games better than this Core i7 laptop.

Hey fellas.

The Steam sale has convinced me that I need to get a much better laptop, albeit one at the low end of the gaming capability spectrum. I'm aiming for 13.3", hence the lower specs (budget is maximum of £500, which almost pretty much means no dedicated graphics.... unless I want a pink Lenovo)

Basically it comes down to:

Core i3 with HD 3000
AMD A6-4455M with 7500g

Graphics benchmarks seem very similar, although I'm well aware that the AMD/ATI solution is probably going to have much better driver support, so a better score in 3DMark isn't always going to translate into a better gaming experience.

I'm also aware that the Core i3 will smoke the AMD in processing power.

So..... will t Core i3 provide enough grunt to make the HD 3000 a better gaming option, or should I go for the AMD Fusion option?

Thanks for any opinions
Except those opinions that are "spend more money, its only like £400 for an i7 and GeForce :p

You're buying bottom-of-the-barrel junk tier laptops if you're seriously considering Intel Core i3/HD3000 or AMD A6-4455 these days, but this might interest you:

http://www.engadget.com/2012/07/13/hp-envy-sleekbook-6z-review/

Realistically I would buy neither. Core i3/HD3000 and A6-4455 can barely play Diablo III at low settings and that's well below the bottom threshold of performance for a gaming laptop. Instead I would put the money in the bank and save up for a few more months. The games you buy from the Steam Summer Sale are yours forever, or until Gaben abandons Valve and flees to the Cayman Islands to live the remainder of his life on a beach somewhere. Don't buy a crummy laptop now to play games badly now when you can buy a better laptop later to play the same games much better later. The minimum amount I would budget for a laptop used for gaming is USD $1,000 period. If you're that hard-up for cash (no offense intended) and you really want a gaming machine now, build yourself a budget desktop gaming PC which will blow any laptop of similar pricing off the face of the planet in terms of performance.

Two questions:

- Does your current laptop have any problems handling non-gaming tasks?
- Do you specifically need to play games on the go?

If the answer to both of these is no, then I'd advise you go with a desktop instead. As Unknown Soldier points out, any laptop you're going to get for £500 is going to have a tough time playing modern games. Comparatively, if you head over to the "I need a New PC!" thread, you'll see desktop builds within your price range which should get good performance out of today's games, and keep you playing new releases for a few years yet.

Actually, for fun, I decided to see if I could put together a quick build under £500, and I managed to come up with this:

That's everything you need, including a monitor, keyboard & mouse, Windows 7, etc., all for £508.38 delivered. For that you get a machine that would comfortably outperform laptops at two or three times the price, and one you can also upgrade as you go along. Also keep in mind that it's something I quickly put together on a single website. With a bit of shopping around, you could probably get a bit more for your money, like a Core i3 or a HD6870 or a better monitor or whatever.

So this isn't really specifically a gaming laptop question but... we ordered a couple of laptops (sager 6165 and 9150) two weeks ago and they should be here in the next week or so. What type of security/malware programs is everyone using? It's been a while since I've had a fresh computer to put programs on. :P

Thanks!

I use the Microsoft Security Essentials. It is pretty lightweight and does a good job. Also, don't forget about http://ninite.com/ It is really helpful for installing those essential programs.

Like stated above, Microsoft Security Essentials, but also install Malwarebytes. It's also free.

I am in the market for a new laptop. I filled out the buyer questionnaire recommened on NBR. I have been looking at clevo/sager builds, but I am open to anything. I am a student, so if a place offers a student discount, that would be nice :).

What is your budget?
$1,300

What country will you be buying this in?
USA

What size notebook do you prefer?
Mainstream (15 - 16-inch screen)

What are the primary tasks you need this notebook for?
Web Surfing, Listening to Music, Computer Programming, Graphic Intense 3D Gaming

What games will you be playing?
I play a wide variety of games, but I don't need anything to run on full, maxed out settings. I would like to have the laptop be able to perform okay on games over the next 2 years (three would be awesome, but I am fine with two, who knows what tech will be out over the next few years). The most intensive games I will likely play in the immediate future will be Alan Wake or Witcher 2, but I am sure most of my time will be spent on Diablo III and Phantasy Star Online 2 (really low requirements). Although, there are some future games that I would like to be able to play some releases over the next few years (Borderlands 2, Watch Dogs, Dishonored, Planetside 2, Bioshock: Infinite, etc.), so I imagine I will need something with a decent card.

Where will you be using this laptop?
Will stay on desk, might move to the couch. I will likely get a windows 8 tablet for on the go. Surface is really interesting.

List the screen resolutions that interest you:
Max Resolution (1920 x 1080), preferably matte.

Approximately what date will you be buying this laptop?
Around 08/30/2012

How long do you want this laptop to last?
2-3 years, but it doesn't need to run everything on max.

Storage?
I would really like an SSD for the OS and an extra drive for games, but I won't be picky. I know how lucky I am to just be getting a laptop at all.

Posting from my Sager np6175 at the moment. Just got it this afternoon, overall really happy with it for the price I paid. No dead pixels or physical issues. My biggest complaint would be battery and how cheap the keyboard is. You feel it kinda shake if you're typing with even light pressure. Other than that, it's my new mobile desktop. Sweet!

There's two brand new Clevo designs coming soon (which will fit in-between the two currently available series, GTX 660M equipped) which I think you'll like the looks of, but I don't know the release date yet.

Since you have a whole month to wait anyway, stay tuned.

The premium shipping is a freaking joke, waste of money. As is the 16GB of 1600MHz RAM, unless you specifically need it.

p.s. - why mSATA over a much larger, standard sized SSD at the same expense?

Core i3 is fine, but you should be looking at ivy bridge, that would be the bare minimum for playable integrated graphics. I bought my kids an acer aspire over a year ago with sandy bridge i5 and 1GB 540m for £500.

This was £429

Any good for £429? Acer aspire 5755.

15.6" HD Screen
Windows 7 Home Premium Edition 64-bit
4GB DDR3 RAM

Oh, yes, pretty good.

The GT 630M is the GT 540M, rebranded, so it's directly comparable to what you bought before.

Does gaf have experience with Sony Vaio Z? If so, how's the gaming on it?

I have the old but sexy FW series from 2008, I cant even run Tribes Ascend properly on low settings at 720p.

So FW's AMD 3470M vs the new Z's Intel HD 4000?

The Z is definitely hmmm.... 2x or more faster, but I don't know about buying it with gaming as the main directive. Well, here are some benchmarks Anandtech ran.

It's a mixed bag, but overall the HD 4000 is close to last generation's dedicated graphics in many games. My main concern is the relative longevity of the device.

Do you mean the NP63x0 models? I see the 17" is shipping soon. Price/feature wise it seems like a good deal. The 660m seems like it would be a pretty decent card for me as well.

Depends on if you plan on getting the media dock or just going straight off of the internal graphics. You will get much better performance with Intel HD 4000, but I would really recommend plopping down the extra cash for the dock.
