The Player 1 Podcast Topic

Looking forward to hearing your thoughts on Walking Dead next week. I'm about 3/4 of the way through the game and I'm pretty disappointed. The writing is...bad. Predictable, jarringly abrupt, goofy ass and ridiculous choices (the scene at dinner if abysmal) and just generally bog standard "humans are the real monsters!!!!" garbage.

It started out awesome. That was a damn gruesome scene in the beginning and taking on the role of the leader for that first bit was incredibly difficult, but as soon as the brothers show up it turns to shit. Maybe it redeems itself in the end but man, I have no interest to keep going.

it might also be because I find post-apocalyptic cannibalism incredibly disturbing

That might be why I liked it more. Yes it was predictable, sure it was abrupt, yes there are some ridiculous choices. Still had a blast playing it. :)

Adventure games lose me when they make it absolutely clear what is going to happen, yet force you to play out the nonsense to get there. The logical thing to do upon arriving at the Dairy would have been
to send for everyone to come with guns, take the place over, and kill the three sickos
.

I'm looking forward to the next three episodes since Whitta is an actual professional writer of narratives and not just a video game writer. If it weren't for that, I'd probably be off the series. Though by the time episode three comes out in September maybe the bad taste will be gone. HA!

Whitta is overseeing the story as a whole, he's only writing episode 4 though.

I thought it would've worked better if there was a long buildup to the reveal. Obviously, something was amiss, but if it played out a bit slower and made the Brothers Grimm a bit less slimy there would've been more tension and the potential for the player to lower his guard, which would've made the reveal all the more disturbing.

I also found some of the characters' behaviours a bit ridiculous.
How about you hold the salt lick above Larry's head and prepare to smash Larry at the first sign he shows of becoming a zombie instead of killing him immediately? I sorta understand Kenny's rationale. If someone isn't breathing and isn't repsonding, for all intents and purposes they are dead. CPR alone is usually ineffective at saving lives. That's why calling an ambulance and getting an AED ASAP is so important.
The family on the farm were a bit silly too.
It's been about 90 days since the outbreak started and already they are eating people? Really? I really like meat, but if I was on a farm I think I would be able to go vegetarian for a little bit longer.
Also, everyone seemed to recognize how slimy the brothers were and wanted to get the fuck out. I wish there was an option to do that.

I have a lot of other nitpicks with it. Part of what appealed to me about the first episode was that most everyone seemed to behave somewhat plausibly.

Has Whitta written anything decent? I know he is a superstar on GAF, but all I know is that he's written Book of Eli, which wasn't very good.

Well as a player I knew what was going on the minute food came up. As an in-game character Lee should have figured it out at the camp site.

But yeah OC, the timeline is completely bizarre too.
Three months and not only have they started this but it's also a finely tuned production and distribution facility? C'mon.

He is very intelligent. I assume that this and the smaller scope of this project compared to movies means that he will be an excellent quasi-producer.

Looking forward to the spoiler talk. I finished the episode and was fairly unimpressed. The meat locker bit was cool and I loved the ending scene. So at least it opened and closed awesome.

From the Yesterday description on the app store: "A psycho is killing beggars alive in New York."

Killing them alive? Holy shit I need to play this and see what the fuck that means!
 
Fair enough on not liking Spelunky, but not liking it because of the random level structure is a bit puzzling to me. The whole game is about being able to identify threats and improvise solutions with whatever you have on hand. If the levels were the same every time, the game would be about memorization instead of pure skill. The random level game design saves it from being another "me too!" indie platformer, and makes Spelunky a very rewarding game. Though, I am a big fan of rogue-likes so maybe I am a bit biased.

I can't stand 'nitch' for niche. Was so happy someone said it properly on a podcast once, and then he's stomped on. Sigh. I've never heard someone say 'fitch' for fiche, but perhaps no-one uses that word anymore in English?

Not a one of you guys wondered why that operation was not only running but also a well oiled machine a mere 90 days after the zombies showed up? They've already had enough dealings to not only have consistent partners but also to piss those partners off? That means they had to be up and running a few weeks after the shit hit the fan. I don't know about you, but it'll take me more than 14 days to go that route, especially when they had all the other supplies anyone could want.
 
Honestly the thought never crossed my mind. Maybe it's because of the length of time between episodes, but the context of exactly how long it was between the time the shit hit the fan and the time we visited the farm is not something I ever even considered.

There's always a chance they were a bunch of twisted fucks to begin with and the whole incident was all they needed to send them over that edge.

edit: hrm, lotsa digs at the recording space stuff for idle thumbs...yea you guys have wives and kids, but have you listened to the production quality of your podcast? I've been a fan of both P1P and Idle Thumbs for years, but Idle Thumbs has always had production values that rival stuff like This American Life or Radiolab - blows other gaming podcasts out of the water in that department, for sure. I did back the thumbs podcast for $10...and $10 to DFA as a slacker backer, after they released that first ep of the 2 Player Productions (clever name, right?) documentary for free. So maybe I'm nerd raging a little bit.

Last Thursday I spent $99 on the Ouya. You guys started harping on it pretty quickly, but still managed to touch on the parts that make it so rad. And no I do not mean piracy.

Hilariously this is the episode where we had a slew of technical problems but it doesn't happen THAT often. I get your point, and it's their prerogative to put together a podcast that rivals the HD-Minidisc version of Dark Side of the Moon if they want. But I think the larger point was - it's not necessary. A group of guys can do a perfectly cromulent podcast with an Olympus voice recorder held up by paperclips while they eat lunch. And it can be just as or more entertaining as one made with thousands of dollars worth of equipment.

Podcasts, for me, are about the personalities and content of the show. Not the quality of said recording (as long as I can understand them and the hosts aren't robotting out AHEM). I look at the podcasts I like the most and 90% of them are done over Skype with mostly non-professional equipment, sometimes sound horrible and it hasn't taken away from my enjoyment of them one bit. I like those podcasts because of the people on them. I do not think anyone who enjoyed Idle Thumbs would say "oh man I only want you to continue recording if the episodes are of the highest and most pristine audio quality imaginable." No. As is already the case fans of that show are enjoying progress casts and Twitch.TV sessions that—hey—probably aren't (I dunno 'cuz I don't listen) being produced with the finest quality recording devices. So why is that not "the podcast"? Why did doing the podcast necessitate a Kickstart? And how is it not going again already?

If you love doing it, there's no excuse not to get it out there any way that you can. Libsyn. $15/month (and plans start at $5/month). Go. Done. And, btw, they are using Libsyn. Their plans top out at $70/month but the plan we use is $15/month.
 
I feel like I'm getting away with a crime when I listen to poor quality audio. It's like I'm eavesdropping on secret agents or something.

In other words, I loved the technical difficulties this week and I hope they happen more often. It gives the show character!
 
can't believe 30 is incoming. Have I really been listening to this cast for this long?

as for tech quality, there's little drops here and there but considering the frequency & content/personalities, it's barely a blip. Don't ever change p1p!
 
I just got to the section where Mik mentions the lack of tutorials and educational information in sports games. I thought the first Forza was pretty good in this regard, teaching gamers the functions of different car parts and how to make proper adjustments as well as teaching proper driving lines, braking, etc. It is rare to walk away from a game feeling like I've learned something of interest and value, and Forza was one such experience. I haven't stayed up to date with the series, but I hope it's continued to improve on the foundation laid with the first.
