GTA4 + iCEnhancer mod. Holy mother of god.

I downgraded my steam GTA4 version to 1.0.4.0 yesterday, and applied the icehancer 2.1 patch together with the the other patches that involved getting the game to work. It worked and I saw some improvement, but it was not like OP

After playing I've applied the Better City Textures (mentioned in OP) and the game crashed just after loading the mission, I tried putting back the backup textures but no-go. So I've deleted the whole GTA4 folder and i'll just wait for the Icehancer 2.1 steam version together with the config tool.

Been messing with all of the different light values. It was a bit too dark at night. Still trying to find a good balance though.

Can you share your ice hancer configfile ?

*edit*
Final Version is out from iCEnhancer 2.1 also for steam and episodes from libertycity version @ http://icelaglace.com/

Honestly, after using a lot of the texture packs I'd say skip them. Most ENBs are created with the use of default textures, how the light hits the buildings, how windows reflect and how roads blend in. Most texture packs are basically some dude who ran each texture through photoshop and sharpened / darkened them and re-packaged them. It looks quite bad.

Just stick with default textures and you'll probably also avoid a lot of trouble.

Once you downgrade it to 1.0.4.0., don't use Steam to launch the game. It'll auto-update back to 1.0.7.0. even if you tell it not to. Use the game's .exe to launch directly, instead. Or add it as a non-Steam game like i did.

I never had that problem when I set it to not auto update.

Texture replacements for the world can be skipped but you really do need the one for just the main roads.

I don't like them but if people want to use it, then that's fine. The one's available either darken the road, sharpen them or make them look very different from every other texture. Plus some areas and pedestrian crossings are still default textures, then it sticks out completely.

By the way, he uploaded the new RAR that also contains the 1.0.7.0 release. This also contains new presets for everyone with stuff like less saturation and something called cross-processing ( Whatever the hell that is, think it might be his 70s look ).

I didn't get that after downgrading and launching from Steam...still at 1.0.4.0 with full set of Ice mod features still working.

I have to wonder if Rockstar looks at this, and then worries that vanilla GTA V will not look as good and people will laugh.

Why would they do that?

As nice as this mod looks R* have a art and design style that will fit their vison of GTAV the same as vanilla GTAIV looks great.

I find the rush to make the game look as 'realistic' as possible is quite off-putting in many cases with these mods.

Hmm I looked in the readme.txt from the 1.0.7.0 / STEAM / EFLC version, but it seems that it's still better to downgrade to 1.0.4.0

1.0.7.0 is the latest GTA4 patch.
Automatically installed by STEAM.
EFLC uses the same shaders

The big deal of these version?
BUGS.
ENB doesn't work great on latest version,
You won't have SSAO/Skylighting & you'll get
THE RED SKY; it's only visible on these patches

Seems that these bugs are not fixed and you still need 1.0.4.0 for the best result.

Yeah...at first I thought, great!! it now works on my Steam version, then i read the readme text and saw it was still not the full version, so I downgraded.

Glad I did, it looks awesome...also installed the better city texture pack, and I'll install a realistic vehicle pack later.

And that will still never change. ENB was never updated beyond 1.0.4.0 as he stopped updating, so it'll never be good on 1.0.7.0.

Just installed the latest version with my fresh install of GTA IV via Steam, everything worked fine.

No more retail disc being required in the drive at all times, woo!

Downgraded and installed. I'm stunned that this runs as well as it does.

At 1600x900 I can max everything in-game and use some pretty nice settings while still hitting a perfect 60 fps (well, near perfect). If I limit to 30 fps using the half-refresh option I can hit a perfect 30 fps and crank the resolution and AA up to bullshot quality (downsampling plus SMAA and FXAA seems to do it).

This runs better than stock GTA IV did fully updated. Very surprised.

Now I just need to look into further improving settings to reach some of the lighting I've seen posted around. Lots to play with.

Sounds great! But why are you using smaa AND fxaa on top of downsampling?

Can you share your ice hancer configfile ?

Will do. It still needs tweaking a bit though, and I'm sure there are much better ones out there than mine!

Does anyone know what file was missing from fxaa in the original 2.1 download?

FYI, I found out why my perfect downgrade wasn't working. Old 1.7 savegames. Make sure you either move them or delete them IF you get the freezing problem right before the GTA4 mainscreen. Mine is working fine now.

Can you post a screenshot of what nightime looks like in yours?

Ya sure. I will do so tonight.

Some claim this mod actually makes the game run better

How will it run on a GTX 570 1.2 i72600K 3.4GHZ and 8GB of RAM. Maybe at a resolution of 1600x1050?

Thanks. So basically I need a crack that supports that patch I assume? I haven't done this in a while.

Yeah, don't want to start linking to anything as that'd probably be against 'Gaf rules but you need a crack made specifically for whatever patch version you have.

Yeah, it's stripped down to the bone. Old Icenhancers ran at 30FPS on my setup, this one will easily hit 100 - However it's starting to look like vanilla GTA with a boost in colours, time of day colours and some reflections here and there - All the ENB magic is gone.

I'm running it on a 560ti, i5 2500k (3.3) and 8GB RAM at that resolution. Was getting around 40-45fps until I turned DOF on. Drops into the high 20s sometimes now.

Gotcha. Not a problem. I know where to get them. Just making sure it still works the same way.

hmm...

So is it even worth it anymore?

Also, what are some of the better car packs and where can I find them?

Anything after 1.35 is personal preference, I don't like them any more.

As for packs and cars, check http://www.gta4-mods.com/ there will be packs among the vehicles, sort after rating or something and find one that appeals to you ( They can be far and few in between, perhaps better off searching )

So gaf, Ive never modded before in my life. I went ahead and installed icenhancer 2.1, I dont know if I did it correctly. I had the clean Steam version, copied the files in the zip to their respective folders. I boot the game and get the icenhancer and some other words at the top left corner. Looks like all's well.

In the game however, there is some grainy filter with stripes on my screen, this becomes very apparent at night. The sky sometimes turns to red and the water is very ugly.

What did I do wrong?

I've actually heard this many times. :(

Makes me wonder if I should bother at all

For those still wanting to mod up the Steam version, here's the simplest guide. Works perfectly.

http://pc.mmgn.com/Articles/GTA-IV-Steam-iCEnhancer-Mod-Guide

I did this guide...and when I hit "play" in Steam....Steam is telling me that "this game is currently unavailable: error"

then I figured I'd try to launch from the GTA Folder itself...and it launched but it didn't have no ICEHancer logo or anything up anywhere....then it went into drunk mode for the cut scenes. I exited out the game...went into my documents, deleted GTA save files...and went back into steam and it still says "This game is currently unavailable"

Use LaunchGTAIV.exe

If I wanted to start everything over..I'd just have to delete that GTAIV folder in the Steam section...and then just copy over my backup one and rename it right?

then start step one on the guide all over again?

So, I got the EFLC as a DD from amazon, how can I downgrade to version 1.0.4.0 from that? afaik it's already at the latest version

For EFLC I used 2.1 on Ice's site. It comes with a bunch of different packages for different patches depending on what you have. It still has the Red Sky bug though for the steam version of EFLC but it only occurs when you move the camera to certain angles it seems, so it's not that big of a deal for me.

Here are some pics of my mix of 1.35 and 2.1 for GTA 4

Generally speaking, how does this run compared to standard GTA4? Let's say there's a PC that runs GTA4 at 30fps. What kind of drop could you expect from installing this mod?
