I didn't care much for the Tate/Talia character at all. It would have been better if Selina filled the romantic role the whole way through. Would have given that relationship more depth. But Talia felt tacked on and while the twist of her being the child that escaped the prison was nice, it didn't feel consequential at all because I didn't care about her at all.

Batman actually has a few real moments of humor. That was really nice to see.
ok here are my questions.

There wasn't a whole lot of cheering at my theater. I was at one of the marathons, and there was more cheering for Gordon capturing Joker than anything in TDKR.

Quite a lot of humorous moments in the movie; though most of it were overshadowed by an emotional or daunting scene that happens a few scenes before it.
I never would have imagined that the Bane / Batman fight would be so fleshed out; thought it would just be a heavy-handed fist fight - but he pulled absolutely everything he had, ninjutsu and deception alike.. and even playing the stealth card at that.
From reading the comics, my heart sank quite unexpectedly when they actually decided to include the scene of Bane breaking Bruce's back over his knee. Pretty much the cause of his retirement in the other universe.

No clue how the fuck Bruce got back so quickly. Part of the problem of this movie is lack of transition scenes. As for why nobody mention Talia, could have been under orders from Bane not to speak a word about Talia's real name.

Batman told Blake that he needs to suit up. Blake says that he doesn't need to hide his face behind the mask. Batman tells him that people believe in the symbol, not the person who's behind it.
He pretty much gives him a heads-up to be ready to wear the Batman suit when he is gone.
When Bruce "dies", Wayne Manor becomes an orphanage and Blake is given access to it. Blake quits the police force (right?) and collects his shit (revealing his name to be "Robin", hint hint).
John Blake goes through the exact same enlightenment as Bruce Wayne did. Bruce pretty much accepted him as his successor, as he is someone who always looked up to Bruce.

I wanted to love it guys. I really did. I avoided the threads. i avoided all but one trailer. I read no reviews and hell I was even legit shocked by the twist at the end, but man was this a step back in the story dept.
The cinematography was amazing, the fights were great, blah blah read the other pages but the story was just not fully cooked. It floated so many awesome ideas around and in the end picked the worst one to propel us to the ending, with a character that seemed to drag the series backwards.
Catwoman was boring as hell. She wasn't that interesting out side the fact that she is really good at being a thief. They never really go in depth on why she is a theif, or why she hates the rich but we are just told she is robin hood and that is kind of it. BR, I hate to bring it up gave us a far more interesting and justified catwoman. The plot thread she dangles (the rich being the real evil of gotham) is never touched upon by the end.
Why does she dress like a cat burglar? Super simple question never answered, but those little details are kind of what hold her back. Asking those questions and receiving answer are what makes a good rogues gallery.

Maybe it's just me, but I always felt that the Joker in TDK justified Ra Al Ghul in BB. A character like him is what Ra's warned about. A creation of a sick dark, twisted city to rotten to live. For much of the movie Bane felt similar. He was much different, but still he felt like the morality of gotham under it's corrupt influence coming to fruition. To drag him into the league isn't very interesting. it's a step back. To bring Talia around and just have her be a repeat of her father just sent the series backwards. I don't want to see the league, i want to see how dark Gotham can be.
Also quite frankly the comics have taken a lot of the league ideas and done more interesting things anyway. Snyder current run dealing on a similar idea with the court of the owls is far better but that's personal preference.
The pacing felt off at moments and tended to drag toward the end but it didn't really bother me. Really it was the end that killed it for me.
And "Robin" sorry but that is dumb. An entire movie revolves around Bruce learning the skills and capabilities to be batman and JGL apparently dons the suit because he finds the cave? Awww oookkaaayyyy almost makes me hope there isn't a sequel

His character is an amalgamation of the 3 longest running in continuity Robins from the comic, Bruce explains why he wears his mask to him in one scene, John then quits the police force and goes to the batcave at the end of the movie and rises up on a platform as the gates open. Maybe Nolan is right and nobody really understands symbolism. To be perfectly honest I'm surprised there wasn't a scene where Blake actually says out loud "Now I'm going to become Batman".

I'm sure that either most of the prisoners are new or they don't know enough. Bane was a legend by then and no one knew the true origin. Rermember, The League of Shadows overtake the prison after Talia escapes.
I don't think it's a question of people not understanding. It got a hell of a reaction in my theatre. it's just kind of dumb, also doesn't help that John Blake doesn't really scream Dick Grayson, Tim Drake or Jason Todd.

But we do know. Batman being a symbol is one of the overarching themes to this trilogy! Bruce even outright says it in TDKR if I remember correctly, stating that anyone can take up the role.

I loved it. Bruce is probably in touch with Blake. Hell I could see Bruce flying back and teaching Blake for awhile. They skipped the whole teenage bit and went straight into adult years which I preferred. Gives more weight to a huge decision like that.
Doesn't mean he became Batman himself compared to a Batman-like figure such as Nightwing.
It's not even symbolism. It's just being able to understand the obvious. And you're right. People really don't understand for the most part, which is why I don't understand complaints about information being spoken too much, or there being too many flashbacks. This is as mass market a film as you're going to get. Things need to be spelled out VERY clear.

Ah that does make sense, if talia was a kid and she looks like she's in her mid 30's then it has been a longgggg time since her escape / the leagues overtaking.
I seriously thought Gordon knew it was wayne the whole time, at the end when he's like "anyone can do it, even someone you put a coat on as a kid to tell him the world is okay" and he's like "bruce wayne..."

I was going to read through the whole thread before posting my random thoughts, but I got tired of reading Sculli whining about how the movie wasn't a 1:1 recreation of Begins. So, here goes:
+Bruce/Alfred. Every one of their scenes together was surprisingly heart wrenching, as was (maybe not surprisingly) Alfred at the graves. Bale and Caine really killed it here.
+Hardy's Bane is a fucking monster. Hathaway was fantastic as Selina. I mostly liked JGL as Blake.
+The Batman/Bane fights are the best of the whole series. Especially the first one, was just absolutely brutal. I absolutely did not see Bane breaking Bats' back coming; took me TOTALLY by surprise, I really didn't think that would happen despite it being the #1 thing Bane is known for. Really awesome shit.
+Loved the Bruce in prison scenes. Also really love the imagery of Bruce having to climb out of a well being linked to his "resurrection." Really nice parallel to Begins there. My heart was *pounding* during the last climb, possibly my favorite scene of the whole movie.
+"Tell me where the trigger is. Then you have my permission to die." Fuuuuuuuuuuck. I love those kinds of dialogue reversals. It's "you never learned to mind your surroundings" all over again! Lots of other great lines too, but this and the one I posted earlier ("Theatrical and deception are powerful agents for the unintiated. But we are initiated, aren't we, Bruce?") stick in my mind the most.
+The ending. From Batman and Gordon's last exchange to Bruce's funeral, all compounded by Zimmer's music...definitely tugged on the heart strings. No point in dissecting it scene by scene, dialogue exchange by exchange, because I just loved every bit of it. It was all very appropriate, very emotional, and very fulfilling.
+THAT FINAL SHOT. So fucking good. I've been pretty adamant against the idea of a Robin or a replacement Batman or JGL being either of those roles...but holy goddamn, Nolan sold me on it practically instantly. Cute pun on the title. A surprisingly satisfying note to end the series on.

Not just what Alfred was telling Bruce, but even Bane's "I will fulfill the destiny of Ra's al Ghul"...I don't know, it didn't sit well with me. Not that I disliked the character or JGL, I just felt most of what he was saying and doing could have and should have been coming from Bruce or Gordon instead. I thought this was especially annoying during the climax, when we have all these fights and chase scenes, and Nolan keeps cutting to Blake talking to kids or talking to soldiers. But that last shot was such a surprisingly, enormously cool payoff for his arc that I don't know if I actually dislike how Blake was treated in the movie. I'll need a second viewing before writing this off as a con or not.
All told, I really really liked it. Plenty of emotion, plenty of intense scenes that had my heart pounding, and a handful of moments that will go down as some of my favorites in the series. I don't know how I'd rank it against BB and TDK. It's probably not the best of the three. It might actually be the worst of the three. But it was still very good and very satisfying. Not a perfect movie, but a perfect ending to the trilogy.

There are large periods of time that pass that it isn't clear that they are long periods of time. By that I mean from the time Bane took Bruce to the prison to the time he returned to gotham it had to be months of not a year before her returned.
Your preaching to the choir with saying it's dumb. Blake totally screams Dick Grayson, Tim Drake and Jason Todd to people who are familiar with the Batman mythos (especially the comics) IMO. Tim Drake/John Blake obviously, His mother died and his father was shot ( like Tim even though this happened after he became Robin), He worked out Bruce was Batman on his own (like Tim), he's an orphan (like Jason), he's a cop (like Dick was), and a few other things. It's all tenuous stuff but it's pretty clear what he's meant to be.

Something like five months.
Bruce was in the prison for probably 6 months total. The bomb after being armed had 5 months left, but i think he was gone a little before that before bane got the weapon.
Bane's death was shit, batman needed to be the one to beat him, not selina blowing him up with rockets. :/.
I think the movie could have been a lot tighter without Talia, Matthew Modine, and a smaller non-future batman role for Blake. The guy playing Daggert seemed to be a bad actor but I get why the role exists.
I wish I wasn't so hyped for the movie, I think I would have enjoyed it more. As it is, its no masterpiece but its a solid ending. Maybe a bit like Return of the Jedi but a little better.

It didn't feel like any of the characters in Gotham had actually suffered for five months. There's no reason for Bane to tell the truth about it being five months either is there? He was all about giving false hope anyway.
But then I guess The Bat autopilot patch did indicate something like 5-6 months passed.

I'm surprised people didn't like Blake finding the cave at the end. I thought it was a fantastic way to end a series that was constantly about making the Batman bigger than Bruce Wayne.
I'm really hoping they do a Director's Cut that is filled with only character movements as characters just 'jump' throughout the movie like Batman talking to Gordon on the ice then next scene is with Blake.
Those are really weak connections though. First of all Dick was never a cop and Tim figured out batman was Bruce by doing detective work. Blake literally looked at his eyes.
Blake probably had suspicions and confirmed it later when he was an adult because he had a decent IQ and anyone in that universe with a decent IQ would have figured it was Wayne.
in all honesty, Batman retires and wayne becomes a recluse isn't enough for everyone to assume? i mean who else in gotham would be batman, not the guy with the BILLIONS?

I wondered about that too. I'd like to think that since he's the freaking Batman, and he was able to secretly buy back his company in BB, that he'd have some of his wealth stashed in other countries.

That's why I said it was tenuous stuff. I know that Tim worked out Bruce was Batman in a different way but the point was he did it on his own, and Dick was a cop for like ten years in Bludhaven in the comics. When I think of Dick now I picture him as a cop even more than a circus kid.
