At the same time, it kind of sidesteps some of the interesting concepts introduced in TDK, most notably the idea that the presence of Batman actually inspires crime instead of deterring it.

Yeah but how would they flesh that out? That Batman retiring ultimately is the best thing for Gotham because it stops the rise of supervillians? Interesting premise but not a very great closing arc.

Haha what? What the hell does it transcending itself even mean?

I mean the ending is better than the sum of parts that make up the movie. Transcends or pushes itself past what the previous 1hr 45min led me to believe.

One little moment I chuckled at that hasn't been mentioned here yet is when Bruce makes his first public appearance in years at Miranda's event. He steps out of his car, the paparazzi all turn and get ready to snap photos, then Bruce uses some kind of EMP or something to knock out all the flashes in their cameras so they can't get a shot. Loved that.

But kids-on-a-bus-on-a-bridge-with-a-bomb? Surely there's a better way to do it than that.

Except that the first act of this movie addressed that very idea. Extraordinary threats will appear in Gotham regardless of whether there is a Batman or not. Ultimately a Batman is needed.

That's absolutely incorrect. Pretty much everything that was needed to appreciate the movie from the prior films was fed to the audience through exposition (the well when he was a child, Rhas, Gordon comforting him, every single thing with Harvey Dent).

Unfortunately, that exposition was unnecessary filler to people that knew the other films, but Nolan obviously went out of his way to ensure this film stood on its own to anyone that hadn't seen the films prior.

I think you can appreciate the movie better having seen his full arc, but it's by no means necessary to "understand" anything, especially not 90% of the movie.

THIS. Try watching one of the later Harry potter movies without reading the books or seeing an earlier film. It is complete nonsense to outsiders.

Hahahah awesome

After all the crazy shit that happened, I kind of expected a more cynical ending.

Let's face it: Gotham is fucked, and Batman can step in periodically to save it from complete destruction, but it will always be a bleak, crime-ridden shithole.

But what it's sidestepping is the idea that Batman is actually contributing to this vicious cycle. That concept was one of the things I liked best about TDK.

They should have had an ending where Catwoman, Batman, Gordon and Blake all draw straws to see who flys the bomb out to sea, Blake loses but just as he's about to go Batman takes his place.

Watching it the second time this scene really hit for me. I love that little detail. Bale is so fantastic in Rises as well.

Another scene that really shined for me was Catwoman's first fight in the bar. The choreography was great in that scene.

Ha thats certainly true. I think its a better bookend to TDK though. I love the idea that Batman is the representation of all the evil Gotham used to be and by the end he stands for all the things that make Gotham endure.

I also liked when Batman first appeared in the tunnel the veteran cop told his young partner that he was in for the treat. Very neat reference to the comics, even if the rest of the police ended up shading Batman 5 mins later

Hathaway and Cotillard were both sexy as f.

I like how both of them f'ed Batman...

TDKR's climax has been done to the point of being a trope. It's not new, it's not exciting.

I enjoyed it and didn't care that it wasn't new.

That got a huge laugh at my screening.

Yes he does break him physically and mentally.

In the end, he decides to stay as Batman for as long as he can. It's implied he's going to search for a partner so he doesn't have to protect Gotham alone for the rest of his life. It ends with everyone in the city cheering when the Bat signal is turned on (quite the change of tone for a Batman film) and he is on top of a building for a few seconds then swoops down. Credits.

She worked for the League of Shadows but never knew how serious things were going to get until she witnessed Bane break Batman thanks to her luring him to Bane. She's arrested by Joseph Gordon's character then escapes and hides out at Waynes house until she finds out what happened to him. She was told very little about the League's plans.

She flirts with Bruce but then comes to realize Bane needs to be stopped so she joins him but keeps it clear she's not going to be a good guy when it's all over. I had low expectations for her character but she actually nailed it.

He gets promoted in the end and is basically the ultimate good guy. No Robin, sorry lol.

Talia provided all the tumblers for Bane. She used Wayne so she could work for him and steal all of his equiptment. You find this out before she has Lucius killed.

Permaban me please if none of this takes place in the film.

Another commonality between BB and TDKR:

In BB, the LoS released the inmates of Arkham. In TDKR, the LoS released the inmates of Blackwater.

So how much did they pay Tom Hardy to park cars at the premiere?

HAHA spot on man.

I know we already brought this up earlier in the thread but the part where Talia is explaining how gotham is all f*ed because of the emergency flooding the camera cuts to Batman, Fox, and Catwoman with the biggest W.....T....F look on their faces. I was dying at that part.

now that I think about it, why didn't Gordon fly the bomb out to sea? It was on autopilot, so he could have done it. And it's not like he had anything to live for. He was old, bitter and his family left him. Batman was more important to Gotham than Gordon. What a selfish asshole, no wonder Blake hated him.

That whole scene was really bad. The part you mentioned, then Cotillard's hilariously theatrical death, which looked straight out of Monty Python.

Selina's "What the fuck is this thing? What the fuck am I doing in it?" look when they're flying around in The Bat was hilarious.

As opposed to the other cheesy fanservice bits to literally every other single Batman character?
Yes, directly opposed. Considering none of the actors portraying those other characters tragically died since. Nolan didn't want to make in-movie reasons to address or explain away a real life death. It affected him pretty deeply, and he didn't want to touch it. Pretty understandable.

is the general concensus that Hathaway knocked it out the park? I hope so, god damned good performance.

I hope the general concensus is also that the film was a 1st draft

Saw the movie on opening night, but I'm going again tonight with another group.

It's weird, I'm feeling just as excited to see it tonight as I was the other night even though I've already seen the movie and know everything that happens.

I just really want to watch it again, I guess. hahaha.

Such a fun trilogy of movies.

Haha that was such a bad death scene. I was like "really?! Did that just happen?"

Thats the first thing I mentioned in this thread. But you know what, that's on Nolan not on the actor. If you've heard about other Directors, they have been known to chew out actors on set like. "really, that's what you are giving me?" He was probably like "Cut, brilliant! Where's my cappuccino?"

It's on Nolan. Cotillard had a pretty great 'death' in Inception
