Yes, directly opposed. Considering none of the actors portraying those other characters tragically died since. Nolan didn't want to make in-movie reasons to address or explain away a real life death. It affected him pretty deeply, and he didn't want to touch it. Pretty understandable.
It did feel really out of place that no one, especially Bane even mentioned The Joker.
I was expecting a scene where Bane compares himself to The Joker and talks about how he has more class or cunning or something, but then I thought "eh, that might be in poor taste".

I think it was done purely out of respect to Ledger. Nolan probably didn't want to seem like he was cashing in on that character or use it if Ledger weren't around to play him.

I didnt think it did, and never thought about it. Did the Joker reference Ras Al Ghul?

when gordon smiles after he rubs the new bat symbol, i know thats supposed to mean that he knows wayne is still alive, but WHY does it mean that?

why would he assume wayne (who he saw explode) fixed it and not just someone else?

Am I the only one who didn't like Banes voice a first, then it grew on me, then I started imitating it every 2 minutes in the car?

Please tell me I'm not alone...

Complaining about how cheesy something would have been if they included something when there was plenty of cheesy fanservice already is hypocritical, regardless of Ledger's death. Not saying they should've gotten someone else to play Joker but the lack of any mention or hinting that the Joker is still around is quite a big gap since Nolan went out of his way to feature just about every other somewhat important character throughout all of the movies.

Now I want behind the scene footage of Batman setting up that spot.

"Oh man, and when I leave the flare for Gordon and he lights it. THIS IS GONNA BE SO COOL! OH MAN!"

*continues painting flammable liquid on to bridge*

It's really funny because Gordon could have fallen through the ice and died before Bruce finished painting the bat on the bridge.

Haha, I thought about this as the scene happened. "I have very little time to save Gotham, but I need to make this awesome fire bat symbol. Oh man, it's gonna be doooope."

I'm with you. I don't know why anyone felt like there needed to be a Joker reference. Like they would get all fucking moist if one character said something about Joker being locked away in some maximum security prison in another city. Like you said, nobody said shit about Ras in the Dark Knight and nobody gave a fuck. But, everyone loved Joker, so the movie is some how missing something because the characters name is never spoken.

Yeah, I loved it a lt. iMax was awesome, Hathaway was splendid. some small irks with the film but still, magnificent.

No, it's because EVERY SINGLE OTHER CHARACTER was referenced.

So did he escape the Bat at the end?Or was Alfred daydreaming?

The real ending:

I would have loved a scene with Bane breaking out Joker and we get a quick exchange between the two of them.

Death sucks. :(

Man that would have been amazing. All the potential Ledger had.

I truly believe he would have been in Inception too instead of Hardy or JGL.

I didn't like his voice at first, because I couldn't UNDERSTAND it. I couldn't decipher what he was saying until about the halfway point in the movie. I ended up not a fan of his voice. He talks very sing-songish at times where his voice goes way up on one word, and then comes way down on the next. I think both the sound editing and the score could have both used another pass-through before the film released.

And.. I popped in TDK blu-ray this morning and watched it again. While I enjoyed TDKR, after watching TDK again this morning right after seeing TDKR, I don't think TDKR can even lace the boot straps of TDK. TDK was just about as close to perfect of a movie as you can get. And its all because of the villain. Bane was great for about 3/4ths of the movie, but ended up completely neutered when the big reveal hit.

I still don't know.. the Joker in Nolan's universe.. feels like if anything he would have sat out since he isn't the one causing the chaos.

Also.. unless mistaken, did Zsasz show up during the movie?

Yeah, but Ras was important to the story. The only other villain was Crane, which made sense to me since we'd seen him in the last so we knew he was around still, and techincally he did work for the LoS previously.

But the thought of seeing Joker walking around (had Ledger been alive) seems terrible to me because I loved his final scene, and I couldn't imagine that character being downgraded to cameo status. Crane worked in a cameo since he never had a huge role, even in the first movie. And, some cop saying something about Joker would have been corny and done strictly as fan service. The only time I could think it would have fit is if Blake mentioned his name when he was talking to Gordon at the start by the bat signal.

did you watch it in IMAX? did everyone who had a sound problem watch it in IMAX? cause i watched it in a normal theater and everything said was pretty clear. but im going to see this next week with a group of people in IMAX and this theory doesnt sound promising.

If Heath was alive, he would have had a cameo at the least. TDKR even had that one Wayne board member back (of course he's Nolan's uncle, but still!)

I think Heath living would have meant no Catwoman or Talia in TDKR. Heath would have been more than just a cameo. Bane and Joker.
