I think Copernicus just jizzed himself.

Hell, I love that new design posted. I would be 100% AOK if that's what the new iPhone looks like. Maintains the sleek, modern, ultra-clean look that has made the iPhone the best looking phone on the market since it's debut. Plastic '90's throwbacks like the Samsung above look like cheap toys next to that design.
Excited, I am.

EDIT:

Quoted for new page (hell yeah 50 ppp)

Ya but it's a 3 year old design. There's nothing to get excited over since it's the 3rd phone with the exact same styling. I'll admit the 4 and 4s are still very sexy phones but they're by no means the best looking phones on the market anymore. Lumia 900 for example is very unique and sexy.

I'd love to see a sleek industrial design which wasn't so fragile. I hate that you pretty much have to have a case for the 4s because 1 drop and the screen is almost guaranteed to break. Phones like these are too nice to be hidden in a case.

Looks weird, but I think it might be the lighting.

Not feeling the bottom but I'll defer judgement until the "real" one is presented.

I prefer the look of the iPhone 4/4S better, but that doesn't look bad. It's hard to top perfection.

On the plus side, it should be more resistant to damage since the back is mostly aluminium(?) now.

GAF will love it because it's very much a continuation of the previous design. It's "safe" and if I know GAF, GAF hates anything new and different.

I hope that isn't the final design. The new design should be more radical. It looks great, yes, but it is the same ol'.

My old HTC Legend had an all aluminum unibody. It still got scratches. Do you mean more shock resistant?

does this mean that we won't see more emotive write ups on how 3.5" offers the most natural feel in the hand, and is the perfect screen size for any phone?

i especially liked those old diagrams showing thumb reach across the various quadrants of the screen to illustrate Apple's thoughtfulness in that regard.

You know that Cook is at the helm now, right?

His mass manufacturing tendencies will outweigh implausible ideas from a proper visionary.

It's a rectangle. Unless they move to a plastic, I don't see it changing much in the near future.

My Galaxy Nexus proves that wrong for me. I have medium/small hands and my thumb reaches across the screen with ease without stretching.

APPLE CHOSE 3.5" FROM THE GET GO FOR A REASON. As if costs of screens, usage of smart phones, etc., etc. hasn't changed since then.

No no, Apple did what they did because there was no better choice period. Nor will there ever be.

It's a rectangle. Unless they move to a plastic, I don't see it changing much in the near future.
Are you implying all phones look alike? iPhone 3G to iPhone 4 was a huge leap. Both rectangles.

Apple will offer a medical brace that you attach over your thumb and slowly tighten screws in the apparatus over the first few weeks of owning the phone. Though painful, this simple and magical device will gradually extend the length of your thumb so as to make the new iPhone the perfect device.

The design is okay, but the coloration is annoying me. Should have made it charcoal throughout or at least removed that awkward looking black bar.

iPhone 4 still looks superior considering the design is cleaner.

EDIT: So is the 5's resolution the same as the 4's screen roughly? Is it more detailed or less detailed per inch of what?

This is how the new iphone should look like to top iphone 4.

Slimmer of course. With a glowing apple icon on the back that doubles as notification light.
That's the only way to top iphone 4's design. Pure minimalism. Won't work as well with the white color though.

Apple acquired fingerprint sensor security firm AuthenTec last week. Do you guys think that tech will be used in the iPhone 5 or next iteration of it?

I can so see Apple getting rid of "slide to unlock" and using a fingerprint reader instead.

Isn't this the argument used on tablets? The 3G used plastic, of course there is more freedom in shaping the device with that material. There are only so many ways you can manipulate metals at the moment without it being cost prohibitive. The 4 is a good design, although the back has a tendency to break if people are rough with the device, metal will be a bit more forgiving and is a perfectly good enhancement to an already good design.

I had a Veer and it was a nice phone. But I wouldn't enjoy it if it had been my only phone at the time.

iPhone OG didn't use plastic. A phone being rectangularly shaped doesn't mean a phone design can't be new and different. See: Lumia 900.

Probably the same PPI but bigger dimensions.

Rather keep the 3.5 inch screen, that is the perfect size for any smartphone. Nothing has beat that size nor ever will. But god damn that thing is gorgeous. My 4S contract won't be up in time but that thing looks great.

Perfect size for a phone, too small for a smartphone.

I'm a big fan of 3.5" as well, but my dad's Nexus S at 4" is still very usable. I like that I can do everything I want to with one hand on my iPhone, with 4" it's a bit tougher.

I would have preferred if they had done a design like this for iPhone 5.

Just one strip at the bottom, instead of the strip at the top and bottom, I don't like how that looks.

I have the OG, and it is the worst design of them all. The material got very worn even though I babied it, the metals were soft, and the device felt hollow. The 4 is a much more resilient and pleasing design. Apple already did the Lumina design, the iPod Nano - why do you prefer they rehash that design over the rehashing of the 4's design?

Yes, the new design looks similar to the 4/4S, but I thought all people wanted was a larger screen and a way to show off they have the latest and greatest - this is exactly what is purported they have done.

I can so see Apple getting rid of "slide to unlock" and using a fingerprint reader instead.

That is a feature more for Enterprise which Apple is making a big big play for. They want to have the most secure phone OS on the market which appeals to business.

I doubt you'll see much of anything from the AuthenTec purchase on the consumer side.

I think the new design looks great. I also think the 4/4S design is nearly perfect, so I'm happy with the evolution of it. These look pretty damn authentic to me. I guess it's just up to whether there are any last minute changes or multiple prototypes. I'm fairly convinced this is what we'll see in a couple months.

Wait, what's the final verdict on screen size? Is it 4?

All signs point to 4".

Perfect size for a phone, too small for a smartphone.

Eh, for a smartphone I want something tiny and easy to work everything with one hand. When you start getting bigger it starts defeating the point, that is a niche far better served by the iPad and especially the upcoming iPad mini.

You won't see anything from the acquisition in the new iPhone, it's too soon. Next year, perhaps.

I still think we're a year away from NFC and the full on mobile payment system, Authentec will factor into that.

You can manage just fine on a 4 in screen. I have one right next to me and I don't have to shift awkwardly to use it. I'll agree that the 4.5 in size is pushing it for one handed use, but the benefits far outweigh downfalls even at that size.

i also love the new design. sure, it's a derivative of the previous design, but i love the concession of the larger screen and non-glass back. i also like how the the wrap-around antenna is more integrated into the body with the cornered edges.

though it's highly illogical of me to sign up for a two year contract at this point, i'll probably do so unless i can buy it for a reasonable price off contract.

I had the OG, too, and it was MUCH better than the 3G/S design. I didn't have any problem with the phone, quality wise. It felt a lot better than the plastic of the 3G. And of course the 4 is a much better design. You're getting off point. I'm saying that the 4 was a big step from the OG/3G design. The next iPhone should be a similar leap. Instead, this is just a minor change, which is a shame.

I sure hope the positioning of the camera and flash was fixed on final production parts if it's actually going to be this design.

Here's a look at the new iPhone assembled from actual leaked parts. It's likely the most accurate look at the new phone so far.

Well I think for all the things one tends to do on a smartphone (browsing the web, looking at maps, playing games, etc... ) are so much more benefited by a larger screen, that the tradeoff in one handed use is more than worthwhile. Besides, I think for most people, it's just a change that they'll adjust to within a week.

Anyways the new design looks pretty good. One thing I didn't like about the 4 was how thick and boxy it was, this one seems like it'd feel much better in the hand.

Absolutely love the leak above.
Personally I can't see any design far removed from the current 4S that would improve on it.
It's the only phone I've ever owned that I refuse to put in a case or cover.

Yeah, but I don't need new just to have new. I think the iPhone 4/4S are at the pinnacle of design, and I'd rather Apple continue with that than go to something inferior, albeit it new, just for the sake of novelty. Also, that's just my personal opinion, so it means absolutely nothing, lol. I'd just be pleased if we wind up with the phone as pictured in that article.

Cook has had no input on this phone. It's been reported for some time that Jobs w involved in this, and no way Apple has not mapped out the next few years already, and Jobs has given his initial input ideas during those periods. We won't see a no Jobs Apple for the next few years in terms of product and vision.

GAF will love it because it's very much a continuation of the previous design. It's "safe" and if I know GAF, GAF hates anything new and different.

Agree. It feels too safe and too lazy. I expected better from Apple, it's a good design no argument, but I want them to push it further and do more. Take a change in terms of design and leap ahead again. Everything about their fall phone experience feels too safe. Everything from the phone design to iOS 6. I hope they have an ace up their sleeve, because stock Android is beginning to get ahead of them.
