The Giant Bomb Quick Look Thread 2

I like how Brad was so careful not to avoid any political feelings. Even when he said "I'll support Israel" he then added his character is for that. Consider how completely nuts people are about America politics, he pulled that off well.

They sometimes get into politics on the bombcast but it always devolves into insanity and you cant decipher who supports what. Other than i think maybe the majority of them like to make 'trickle down' jokes.

How does a a game that merges P4 with P3 characters in a fighting game lead to P5? Did I miss some sort confirmation that old characters would return in P5?
The story mode is huge and leaves certain things unresolved, with at least one thing that's super big in terms of Persona lore being hinted at.

That quicklook really made it obvious how much that gamespot player still sucks. Damn pixelated.

Jeff dropping the Persona 2 "both releases" reference into the QLEX... it was only a few years ago that he was proclaiming that he sure as hell doesn't know anything about Shin Megami Tensei, now he's casually talking about YHWH and Innocent Sin and shit.

Persona 3 and 4 are gateway drugs.

Jeff played some Persona 2 at the time I believe.

I think if you ask him he will still respond with: "I'm not a Persona fan, I'm a Persona 4 fan." Who knows what will happen when the 5th iteration comes out.

They already seem to be a level above stepping on politics by explicitly stating that that's what they're doing, especially when half the riffing is based on pointing out how absurd it'd be for them to be following certain issues.

In most areas, Persona is a truly different RPG. Instead of relying on silly medieval themes, it takes place in modern times. It should come as no surprise, then, that the game's characters are mere teenagers, not buffed-out, sword-wielding maniacs. And because the setting is the modern era, the characters aren't exclusively equipped with swords and knives - guns, including 9mms and AK-47s, also come into play (so to speak). And instead of always fighting monsters, players are given the opportunity to sweet talk their way out of fights. Players who use the silver tongue, instead of the shiny sword, earn components of spells. And the more components a player has, the more powerful his spells ultimately become. The only part of the game that holds true to the old RPG standard is the gameplay. Fights are turn-based, some encounters are random, and the dungeons are large and easy to get lost in. These are indeed elements that make RPGs great. But there's a downside to this game….

The dialogue in Persona is, in a word, insane. Safe money says the translation team stayed up late watching Jerry Springer while they were working, because a good portion of the lingo is of the "Oh, my bad!" and "Girlfriend!" variety. The rest of the text, well, makes no sense at all.

The localization of Persona 2 seems like a very by-the-book affair. While the game is definitely in English, the wording and grammar is rough at best. Also, the game contains a few concepts that would really make sense only to someone with passing knowledge of Japanese pop culture. Add these together and you're left with game that has a high potential to confuse, though some will definitely find humor and perhaps even a bit of additional challenge in the game's mind-bending take on the English language.

Persona 2: Eternal Punishment has its share of flaws. The graphics could have been a little sharper, the translation could have been a little clearer, and the menus could have been easier to navigate. But if you can manage to get over these flaws, you'll find an RPG that dares to be different, but not at the sake of an interesting story and exciting gameplay. RPG fans looking for something other than the standard "boy meets girl, boy loses girl in heart-wrenching cutscene, boy avenges girl's death and saves world" formula should definitely give Persona 2 a shot.

I don't know why I find this line so funny

We double checked, just to be sure.

I know what you mean but as far as I know Jeff's only real exposure to P3 is the P3P quick look he did with Vinny, and he really just had the understandable this-feels-like-a-knockoff reaction. It's not like he played it for 20 hours and then gave up because of pacing or Mitsuru casting Marin Karin all the time.

And that's fine, of course. I was just having fun with the fact he loves P4, gave P1 and P2 good reviews, and would probably need to be forced at gunpoint to play P3 to completion.

When Vinny didn't seem to recognize anything when the P4 gang went on their school trip, it made me wonder how far he got in P3 before giving up.

SMT4 ER for 2013 confirmed.

Zoujurushi was behind it all.

Aluminum in the DRINKING WATER. It comes from chem-trails! Wake up people!

I really wish GB would give us a better flash player. The one they have now is absolute garbage. If I choose the streaming option, it constantly freezes, even if I have an amazing connection. Progressive, usually works, but sometimes crashes my flash player in Google Chrome. Youtube is always solid so I go that route anytime it is available, but for subscriber only videos I cannot.

Also the compression and pixelation is horrendous for "HD" quality.

You should use the HTML5 player. It's all I use, it works on every browser, doesn't use p.o.s. Flash, and the quality of the videos are fine.

Well they're not putting guns to their own heads. That's a plus!

Whimsy aside, the P4 characters were just more interesting for me. P3 had two older teens that I would describe as... stoic and mature, I guess. Then you had the
kid and the dog
, who did nothing for me. I played P3 on PSP less than two years ago and the only character who I really remember at all is Junpei.

Akihiko is cool, or at least is more prone to relax or being more open than Mitsuru (I endend kind of disliking her).

But I think I prefeer the "After School Gang" mood of Persona 4 than "School Activity Club" of 3.

Just watched the KH QL.

KH and Duke Nukem both need a 'i'm aware of how dumb this is' character that's well written. I want the protagonist of KH 3 to be Darkwing Duck, and he's just like
7ITw5.gif

Also, I always found Akihiko and Mitsuru as two try hards. Like 'YEAH THESE CHARACTERS ARE FUCKING COOL, RIGHT?!' That's what I liked about P4 is that everyone had their own goofy little flaws instead of cool flaws. Like Kanji's insecurity and GET BENTing

That is not really something the Japanese can do.
That's not true at all. Nier is better written than almost anything the West has mustered. Ico is almost always cited as a high point in game based story telling.

Kingdom Hearts isn't well written, that doesn't mean the Japanese are at fault, it means Nomura is. But saying that, I don't think anyone would expect a masterful script from a kids Disney/Square mash up action RPG. If you were expecting the Grapes of Wrath, your expectations need realigning.

It's a bit of a cop out to say it's badly written, but it doesn't matter, but it's badly written, and it doesn't matter.

The P4 Characters while still acting more light hearted got into some really deep things. Naoto's desires to be seen as a man, Rise's struggle on who she really is, Chie trying to protect everyone but also trying to feel feminan. I like the fact that the game revolves around desires and secrets rather then P3's theme of death and suicide.

I meant the Japanese are not very good at the whole self aware thing, but to your point the Japanese are also often terrible writers. I have not played Nier, but Ico is hardly a great example of story telling because of it's writing and more the lack of it. Same goes for Shadow of the Colossus.

That is writing. Scenario construction is writing. Given the fact most prose are actually recomposed during localization, it is the only writing in Japanese games you can realistically evaluate.

EDIT: Unless you speak Japanese of course.

While writing is more than just prose and dialogue, I'd say that most of the storytelling in Ico/Shadow of the Colossus is more an example of good directing than writing. There scenario itself in those games isn't really what makes those games compelling, it's how they are presented, especially in terms of things like the tone and mood.

I was rewatching the ER, and I got to episode 91, and it really reminded me just how good the writing is.

'But Kanji, that's alcohol!'
....*walks off screen*

Did they switch the video player again? Can't watch any of their videos on the site for a week or so now. Always have to go to their terribly unorganised Youtube channel.

"Man, that's a watermelon!"
Yu whatever will never be as cool as Charlie Tunoku.
"Don't write about me. Don't let people know that you know me. Let me see that book. What the hell have you been writing about me?"

Should've gotten Vinny to do the NA dubs for P4A and the anime

its funny cause sora constantly does this in this game but just decides to go along for the ride

I think the P3 characters are just less interesting. They're definitely less fun, P4 has a much more whimsical tone.

I kind of like the coldness of it. P4's tone was great, but Golden takes it too far. I'm replaying FES at the moment, and it's nice to have a tone that at least tries to be serious to a point, even if the characters are mostly cliches.

I've said it in a load of topics now, but basically the new HUD, the new battle animations and most of all the new events are astoundingly herpy derp and happy-go-lucky.

EDIT: Removed that link, because of the related videos, which could give away minor spoilers in their thumbnails. Basically, there's a scene involving singing that I hate.
