The Giant Bomb Quick Look Thread 2

I've said it in a load of topics now, but basically the new HUD, the new battle animations and most of all the new events are astoundingly herpy derp and happy-go-lucky.

EDIT: Removed that link, because of the related videos, which could give away minor spoilers in their thumbnails. Basically, there's a scene involving singing that I hate.
What about these makes the tone worse? I can see new animations being goofy, like the motorbike attacks, but what about the HUD is bad? I don't really care about the side stuff, I've played the original already, it's not like they removed stuff from that.
I hope.

Things like the flower sillhouettes everywhere, and the all out attack skull being pink with pigtails once you get Rise.

Also, the scene I linked before is
the team form a pop band and sing Rise's idol song 'True Story', from the anime. I wasn't a fan of it in the anime, but it at least made sense. WAY too herpy derp for my taste in the actual game though.

If that's supposed to be 'cool', then I stand by my original point

Thanks goodness somebody agrees with me.

Thus the two fanbases of Megaten seem to disagree on this, which is an indicator of the general tone shift of anything involving P4 that came out after P4.

Anime probably doesn't even have Funky Student

That is really bad.

Sounds like you all can't handle the swag.

Wait, what?

The Persona games are pretty much the same thing in terms of design and story beats, just in video game form.

Not really. Most JRPG follow a lot of the same tropes of awkward wording of animes, but the reason I get so behind games like Persona and Yakuza is because either the writing or the translating makes it flow better in English. The drunk Yukiko/club scene is the corniest part of P4 and feels like it belongs in an anime because it's unbelievable and feels like it's just there to be there. The rest of the game does a decent job of capturing what high school kids actually act like rather than what animes think they act like

I felt the opposite, in that the games pretty much hit plenty of typical anime high-school tropes. Gotta have a sequence with hot springs where the guys somehow are there with the girls, gotta have a school festival scene for more wacky hijinks, gotta have a class trip for more hijink opportunities. Many of the S. Links cover basic character developments commonly seen, and the major plot points have also been done before. And that's not even getting into the harem situation you can easily build - at least in P3 it was harder to pull off, P4 doesn't even bother with that and basically lets you build a harem easily.

Not to say that's all a bad thing - when executed well, regardless of media delivery of video game or anime series or whatever, its entertaining.

It is also directly adapted from the game.
It's basically combining 3 of the 4 possible scenes into one.

Even Persona's art style is different from most anime. Characters (Particularly male characters) have an actual shape to their head and identifiable faces. And their clothes are realistic and stylish.
You don't watch a lot of anime, right? This isn't necessarily uncommon. :P

Boomaloom, hit the nail right on the head.

For the most part, I really don't like anime, but I love Persona. I know of a lot of other fans who feel the same way.

unlike the rest of persona 4

it's okay guys, if you liked persona 4, you liked an anime in video game form

you don't have to be ashamed and make excuses for how it "doesn't count"

It's okay guys. Just because you like anime doesn't mean every japanese game you play also counts as anime

Wait, what?

The Persona games are pretty much the same thing in terms of design and story beats, just in video game form.

This scenes and tropes are actually constructed to be in video game form (Kings Game multiple results, girlfriend choice, MC null personality) not mention that are better written or felt shoehorn like some parts in the anime.

Saying "Just Video Game form" kind of dismiss why Persona 4 as a video game is so awesome.

Everyone chill, the P4 anime was made as fanservice for fans of the games, not for new people to the series. The anime is of course going to be more over the top and fanservicish because that is what its supposed to be. Some people will love it, others will hate it. Me? Sort of split 50/50 on that. Its the same with P4: The Golden's additions which are almost all pure fan service.

Dude, watch this:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BxL5U7ZJtCo#t=295s

They made Yu (the player)'s actions a bit more over the top, but that's also because they can't just fade to black and have inner monologue text. :P
uh, maybe you can't read, but i've seen this scene. i know what happens. it's already a silly scene wherein the characters, under the influence of 'alcohol', act like exaggerated irritating versions of themselves.

the anime scene just takes it to 11. it's egregious.

I don't watch anime.

But seriously, Persona 4 is purestrain anime as fuck in concentrated form. You'd have to be in denial to think otherwise.
there is a self-awareness in P4 that i think people appreciate.

20-hours into FES and the game is squarely up it's own ass, but because some of the characters have endeared themselves to me (the old people, Junpei, Fuuka, Maiko, the drunk monk) i'm sticking with it. it's pure undiluted anime navel-gazing, but i like the art style and the music and the combat mechanics enough not to stop playing. i think the Persona 4 anime is similar in this regard. without the self-awareness and the other trappings of the game itself there to buffer the sheer "goddamn anime"-ness of everything, it comes off as over the top and cheeseball, even moreso than the game.

right. adapted. as in they had creative license and took what was a pretty silly scene in the game and turned it to 11.

This, basically. It's obvious that P4 takes a lot of inspiration from anime, but you're delusional if you don't think there's a fundamental difference in the way the story is told in the game versus the show. They took a product informed by anime and anime'd the hell out of it.

I'm not dismissing it at all. I played and finished P3 and P4 at launch and thought they were great games, but I'd also be lying if I didn't recognize a ton of common tropes used in anime along the way. Again, it's not a bad thing.

Agreed. That Kings Game scene is the only part I really liked from the series purely because it was over the top, yet in a creatively done way to combine several game scenes at once.

Not to take a side, but lets look at how Kanji is handled in the game vs the anime. In the game, its treated like a real issue, and Kanji is treated with some amount of maturity. The anime version plays the entire thing up for laughs and never stops.

I should put point out that I actually watched and enjoyed the anime for the most part. It's very silly to say that the tone is the same in it though.

Hated the additions in The Golden, by the way.

I know that Dantis, I see you on gamefaqs all the time. It is fair to say that the additions of Persona 2 Eternal Punishment portable are way more substantial than the ones from P4G right?

You'd be surprised how many people have been saying this to me on various sites lately.

It's quite disconcerting. I should use different user names.

Also, yes. Maybe. I think. I haven't actually played Eternal Punishment.

lol you have a reputation for hating everything, but I dont think being critical of things you like is a bad quality. Basically the big Eternal Punishment add on was added scenarios where you get to play as one party member and see what he did for half the game, and its all expanding on the world mythos and on the connections of innocent sin and eternal punishment. I wish more people liked P2...Just like I wish that Atlus fixed up the gameplay.

Not sure they'll have time to fit this kind of thing in. I'm expecting the film to skip out most of the middle part of the game.

It should be pretty simple to cover the 3-4 months of
nothing happening except for full moon boss
in a montage or something.

Mhmm. And the redone soundtrack by Konishi, which is weak by MegaTen standards, but still good. The EX Battle remix is really great.

I'm not sure how long the Tatsuya scenarios are, but The Golden's new content took me about two hours. The way some people talk about it, you'd think it was a whole new sixty hour game.

Its 3 movies now apperently

...Wut.

The first two will be the most boring films ever...

I hate to break it to you guys but according the Giant Bomb encyclopaedia of video games Persona 4 is an anime.

One of the themes is anime.
