3DS XL First Impressions/Previews

I was kind of planning to buy a 3DS XL with the helf of a $50 gift card from Amazon I got.

Then I remembered Amazon probably won't be selling it. :(

So the people that have the XL and got their screens scratched are all making it up? The problem still exists. It doesn't appear to be as widespread as the OG 3DS, but it still exists regardless of whether or not you want to deny it exists.

smudges are not scratches, and there has been zilch in the way of photographic evidence, so it doesn't exist.

Still can't grasp how ppl struggle with the sweet spot. Hold it in front of you, and keep your eyes open to see visuals. Refrain from constantly swaying the device.

Occasionally you may move the device out of position and experience a split second of a hazy misaligned picture. This is unavoidable at this stage of tech advancement.

And lastly, don't be a baby.

The fact that it didn't happen with your first must mean you didn't take it out and about very often?
Even in my man-purse moving around as I walk was enough.

not very often, correct sir.

I wasn't aware that moving the 3DS actually made it more exposed to scratches and no not being sarcastic

You mean, other than the pictures in this thread of scratched screens.

You're aware that not everyone's eyesight and optics are exactly the same as yours, right? Some people have a more difficult time than others. Calling them "babies" seems to be needlessly stupid.

I think the issue is that if you gently close and open the 3DS it'll be fine. If the screens get pressed together, which is easily done in a pocket or bag, then scratchy scratch-a-roo.

It exists, I just had mine serviced by Nintendo to fix it. If you're going to travel much with it I'd suggest something placed between screens, screen protectors, or do that extra rubber foot install people have done.

Yep, I have over 100 bucks credit at Amazon. Had been hoping they'd change their policy on Nintendo hardware (or Nintendo would change their policy towards Amazon US), but that doesn't appear to be happening. I'll more than likely go to Target since their return policy is as good as Amazon's, and there appear to be a lot of issues with the XL that might necessitate a return. Better safe than sorry.

I wholly plan on putting some spare 360 feet on my unit. My only fear is it being scratched right out of the box. It's not like I can't return it, but that would totally ruin a midnight pickup.

Caved and picked up a White LL. Most looking forward to seeing how Layton 3DS looks on it. I think I'll give it another playthrough.

Worried about scratches still. Always left that foam paper inbetween my old 3DS, but this doesn't come with one. Maybe a tissue?

Just about to purchase one of the Game bundles... I'll have no problem with getting this to Australia and doing a system transfer from my Aussie console right?

Also, charging wont be an issue with my older 3DS charging cable?

I see now, thanks for clarifying. I think i'm going to get one of those solutions

Still on the fence about this, pretty big investment. Last handheld I bought was a PSP at launch, didn't play it much, but damn Mario kart 7 is a blast. Is there still a large community online?

Initial impressions..

speakers: if there's a difference, it doesn't both me. It's not bad enough to ruin my experience.
yellow tinted screen: can't notice it at all. I have my white LL, so I'm constantly comparing, and the screen always looks whiter than the unit.
scratches: no scratches as it came.

ds game quality: stretched out four swords (zelda) and it looked great. stretched out DQIX didn't look as nice, but still playable. I'll be playing games stretched, and not in 1:1.

My only gripe is the price! That's 20,000 yen ($230?) for the system and the AC adaptor, and I'm going to only be able to sell my 3DS for 9,000 yen (unless they find a fault, but I doubt that). I think it was worth it, but still it hurt the wallet. That money could've went for DQX.

Cradles are 1200 yen ($15?). May pick one up after I sell 3DS. To the store!

i've been charged/pending, but i remember reading something like it'll stay a "pending" charge till it ships, whatever that means, either way my balance says my balance-$168. it was $168 /w the points discount, hella good price and it comes out in a week or so anyways. too bad it's really hard to earn the "points" there now to get a good discount for stuff in the future, luckily i had some stocked up. never ordered from them before but alot of ppl ordered a vita from them and were happy with it.

Alright, looks like I will just allocate the funds I was going to use ahead of time. $170 with no tax and free shipping is really hard to pass up.

what's wrong with optional completely ignorable things

Even though I don't really care about them, I often find myself going out of my way to do things in games to try and unlock them. It's some weird cathartic release. It has some sort of OCD effect on me that I don't like.

Oh, Amazon! LOL

Is there a trophy system for 3ds games?

i wish. still looking for news on a WU system but it sounds like it might only be 1st party.

i never get this - "i have poor control, so i dont think anyone else should have these"

No, thank gawd. Hate trophies/achievements.

This is incredibly dumb. A trophy/achievement system is easy to ignore. Having one brings in more consumers but does nothing to alienate current users. It's stupid to not have one, but what's worse is they do sort of have an achievement system...built around a pedometer. Ugh.

About damn time.

Means nothing. The only reason the 3DSXL even shows up in an Amazon search is because some third party listed it for sale (in 2013).

That is subjective. Some people have more addictive personalities than others, which is probably why the system exists in the first place. Anyone who wants to disable them or turn off notifications completely should have the option.

Wow thank you for understanding instead of the cliche "You don't like achivos?! ROFL YOU'RE DUMB!!!"

Always nice to see a poster out there that actually reads and understands responses in a thread.

Yeah, plus it does sound like there might be influence on the design that's more subtle and hard to easily notice, or they do something like actively show how you're progressing towards an achievement which CAN'T be disabled, and thus they're always visible to some degree. Plus I hate that kind of standardization crap, I think it's better to have an achievement system unique for a game rather than a one-size-fits-all one, especially since for some games it serves no purpose.

Your post was perfectly understandable, but doesn't change the fact that having the option is infinitely better than NOT having the option. Not liking them doesn't make you dumb. Thinking the platform is better because it doesn't offer the choice however is incredibly dumb. To suggest that not having an achievement system is a good thing because you can't control yourself is just silly. Anything that attracts more users to the platform is good.

I like the fact that there isn't an achievement system. How is that "silly"? The Vita has one, but no one seems to care about it regardless. Looks like that isn't all that important at least to the handheld market as of yet. Definitely not so important that not having it would hamstring the platform's sales.

Personally, as someone else said, if I could disable them entirely in an option somewhere I'd be totally fine with it.

No one has suggested that not having one kills a platform. It enhances it. Vita is doing poorly because its overpriced and under-promoted. The trophy system plus friend list integration is light years ahead of what's on my 3DS. Not to mention that on my Vita my purchases are tied to me instead of to my hardware. In these areas Nintendo is just lightyears behind everyone else.

Can anyone with a 3DS and an XL tell me how bad the yellow screens are? I currently use my 3DS with power saver on so it's already slightly yellow. How would that compare to an XL with power saver off? I'd be willing to stick with 3DS-level battery life if turning off power saver on an XL would make it look comparable to a 3DS with power saver on. If possible could someone provide comparison pictures?

Oh, and I typed this on my 3DS so excuse any typos.

Not XL related as such but I took some photos of my 3DS to sell on eBay, and I thought some people might appreciate them, perhaps in comparison to the new model.

While I prefer the look of the XL, the original still can look pretty damn good imo! Depends on lighting..

Been using my Vita a lot lately and I'd love to mash it together with the 3DS. The Vita's beautiful screen, amazing d-pad, and dual analogs, and the 3DS' buttons and clamshell design. Vita's face buttons are so bad compared to my OG 3DS. Hopefully those haven't changed on the XL other than being matte.

So I backed down and got an European silver XL to play alongside mybjapanese white LL. the transfer process is sweet. No yellowing nor scratches on either. Love the screen. Less fingerprinty. The clamshell feels more secure. More comfortables to hold. Stylus in a better position. 3D slider doesn't slide itself on anymore. Sound isn't as loud but fine enough for me (I usually play with podcasts on anyways with the game music as background). All in all my favourite machine(s) since the Game Boy Micro was released.

^ Unf. I will always have a soft spot for the Aqua Blue 3DS. If it wasn't for the fact that my 3DS had a sunken touch screen (half of my touch screen was concave) and the fact that the d-pad is nearly unusable because of how uncomfortably placed it it, I probably would skip the XL and stay with my gorgeous Aqua Blue 3DS.

Damn! I hate the look of the Aqua Blue 3DS, but those pics look mighty beautiful!

Nope, I just don't like them.

I never get this - "I like them, so everyone else should"

I can do it too XD

gravijah was talking about an optional system. you don't even want the rest of us to have that, apparently!

*edit: your later post implies you would, but your earlier one doesn't

This is never catching on Irish , cmon son.

man i am gonna either get the WU OP or make sure it gets in the tagline, it just makes sense and sounds better.

everyone used acronyms with SNES, N64 etc....it's the WU, baby! bong bong.

i mean look at this shit right here, shit's already gone viral son

Hmm, I wonder if it's too late for Nintendo to get some product placement in the RZA's new Iron Fists movie?

GAME for once are doing what seems a great offer: the 3DSXL with vital things like the AC charger and a free game for £179. The free game is from a choice of four including Kid Icarus and Kingdom Hearts. Might have to pick up one of these with Kid Icarus!

Be careful. System transfer will not work with two systems from different regions. I am not sure if Australia and UK are considered different regions or not so you might want to check with Nintendo or an Aussie GAFer like Vooks or EatChildren first.

Here is the Nintendo UK website's section on the system transfer which I used to clarify everything before I did my system transfer:

Nope; I am using one of those with an XL and it works just fine. I miss the cradle though :(.
