I've never had a problem with Nintendo hardware, so this never occured to me. I'll do it when I pick up my own system.
You've been lucky then. I had to replace 3 Wiis before I realized they were dying because leaving Wii Connect enabled melted the graphics chip. One DS Lite just fell into pieces in my hand as I played it because of faulty hinges (these hinge issues were widespread and are why we now have a 3DS with very loose hinges to the point that top screen essentially flops about), had to replace my original black 3DS because the simple act of closing the lid scratched the top screen. Nintendo hardware is far from infallible. The tact of opening it in store doesn't work for everyone, especially those of us who order online. Fortunately Nintendo's customer service is good for replacements (it's absolute shit if you want to transfer purchases from one 3DS to another and have lost your original 3DS though).
