3DS XL First Impressions/Previews

Well, its not quite convincing to me. :/

The guys is just checking it very quickly with his window as a light source, the scratches produced by the bottom screen should be very thin so you would need a much more powerful and concentrated source of light to see them.

Disagree. My roommate has a scratched original 3DS. The scratches are thin yet easily seen with ambient light. I'm looking at it right now in fact.

Well if you can't see the scratches in normal light than who cares if they are there!? I think you are mistaken sir.

That's not proof that the XL doesn't scratch. I own a 3DS that has no scratches. That doesn't negate the fact that many people have scratched 3DSes.

Proof that the 3DS XL doesn't have a self scratching defect. At least not all them.

There may be some that have this defect, though I don't understand quite how. The bumpers and bezel length should all be identical. It's possible there is some manufacturing issue still present, but I'm now more inclined to believe any scratching issues on the XL model will be rare and unsubstantial.

People also claim in this thread that they will all scratch if placed in your pocket and any pressure is applied to the top screen clamshell. Some have went as far to say they are scratching them just by closing the device. This video proves otherwise. He manhandled that thing pretty well with zero instances of scratching.

There was most certainly a problem with the original model, as I'm looking at once first hand. There is no way these bumpers provide adequate protection for the top screen. However, the new design's more intelligent bumper placement provides obvious clearance for the top screen and bezel. I'd be more ready to believe a minor case of trolling rather than a massive scratching defect repeating itself with a hardware revision given the facts.

Oh how amazing! Because when someone claims the system has a defect they obviously mean it will effect every single unit.

I went on to explain that I feel the issue, if there even is one, will be much less wide spread than the original. Thanks for being a douche about it though :)

Why the fuck isn't amazon carrying the 3ds xl?!

They also don't carry the 3ds and the wii, that's why.

No one knows why, but it's assumed that there's some kind of dispute between the two companies, and the last time amazon officially carried the 3ds was when the self-scratching screens became an issue, and Amazon stopped selling them.

Sure this has been answered before sorry, but it's a huge thread and just wanted to ask: what's the consensus about the XL being worth it for existing 3DS owners? Thinking of trading mine in tomorrow, bigger screens/more comfortable to hold sounds great, but I'm slightly worried about IQ on that bigger screen? Thanks guys!

Slight reduction in image quality. Nothing major, but the games do look sharper on the original unit.

The general consensus is that if you already own a 3DS that this upgrade isn't necessary in the least. If you're looking to buy a 3DS for the first time then the XL is easily the better option.

One last question, what's the 'feel' of the unit like? One of my biggest problems with the original hardware was how awkward it felt to use the D-Pad. Metroid Fusion in particular was a nightmare to control, the constant L/R Shoulder button use combined with the low D-Pad was murder on my hands. If they've fixed that, then I think I'll go for the upgrade.

Dpad location on the original 3DS is horrendous. Have read comments that say it's far more comfortable on the XL. Some people also saying that the triggers are harder to hit. I assume those people have small hands.

Disagree. My roommate has a scratched original 3DS. The scratches are thin yet easily seen with ambient light. I'm looking at it right now in fact.

Still, even at this point, the shitty 240p quality of the video doesn't help seeing those scratches either, I mean, even if the scratches would be there we'd see jack shit.

What?

If I buy a brand new system handheld, and I insist on brand new, I expect it to have not a single darn scratch, whatever lights I put on it, especially on the main screen.

I see what you're saying, but I've watched the video several times without noticing any scratches. The quality is good enough to make out any imperfections when the light is shining directly on the screen. I did notice dust afterall.

I highly doubt he made a video to lie about it.

Ok, so I was thinking through this for the last month: Get the XL, even though I own a launch 3DS, or get me a nice Vita. A friend was staying at my house for a few days and he brought over his Vita and I really love that system. But man, besides GR there is literally nothing I would have to play at the moment and the next game I'm interested in is Persona 4, which I already own on another system.

Then there are already 17 awesome 3DS retail games on my shelf and the XL is like half the price, because I want the 32gig card if I get a Vita.

So Vita has to wait until next year and I got myself this bad boy:

So here are my first impressions after day one.

I got the red one even though that was the only color I haven't seen up in person before. I dislike the tone of the blue one under natural lighting conditions and the silver one looks like something my grandparents would have bought so it had to be red.

And I'm sooo happy with my decision! The shitty Iphone pic isn't doing it justice. Its a nice saturated darkish red. By far the best one of the launch colors imo. Even better than white imo.

The materials feel nice, especially on the outside. All buttons and the slidepad are a major improvement to the original.
I was expecting the worst with the speakers but they are totally fine from what I heard so far, but I haven't tested them a lot yesterday. Using headphones most of the time anyway.

The screen: Yes, the tone of screens of my unit are pretty yellowish. And yellowish is an understatement. During the data transfer I had both systems side by side and compared to my 3DS the screens of the XL are piss yellow, and I'm not even joking.

Made a pic but it doesn't show how yellow they are, when they are supposed to be white :/
Upper screen is a bit worse than lower as well...

But as soon as I started playing games it wasn't a problem at all. The colors during gameplay are actually fine.

I played a lot of games and WOW, it's such a fresh and awesome experience. I don't want to review all of my games but highlights were Star Fox, Mutant Mudds, MK7, Revelations, Zen Pinball

Couldn't get to much into Kid Icarus U and Theathrythm for now, because I don't want to play stylus heavy games until I have screen protectors on that thing.
OoT was the only one where I realised, that it looks definitively more pixelated than on the small one.
Ask if you have questions to any specific games.

Gameboy, NES and GBA games are amazing on that screen, also in full screen mode. Don't know what people find blurry, looked good to me. At last I tested a Metal Slug 7 (DS) and maybe it's time to shelve my DSiXL. In the original ratio it's perfect and in full screen it looks a tiny little bit blurry but still totally playable.

Now the "bad" thing. I'm reading a lot of "the 3D is just better all around on the XL" comments in this thread and that is simply not true.
The effect is not "better" in any way, just because the screen is bigger. It's the same. But the sweetspot is much, much smaller on the XL for sure. I had the same experience on a demo unit two weeks ago and was already worried but someone suggested that it's because of the calibration on the demo unit. But it's not.
With the XL the screen-eye-distance has to be pretty much exactly something like 30cm/12". If I get closer to my face or move it away (e.g rest it on my lap) the effect brakes almost immediately and vertical lines appear on the screen. That wasn't the case with the orig. 3DS...

So a small but big minus in the end... But I'm super happy with my purchase regardless :)

btw: I lost my entire friendlist with 100 entries, because I spilled soda on my old one on Kid Icarus launch day and Nintendo had to reset the internal memory of my old machine when they fixed it.

so here is my new FC: 0087 3341 5913

I don't want to be forever alone :)

Yeah, you're probably right, I'm not arguing to prove you wrong either, its just that the whole thing feels rushed to me. A better quality video with more efficient lightings would have been more reassuring than this to me.

I want that thing not to scratch itself, its just that many people have proofs that it may be the case.

Could anyone here with the blue model provide pictures of what it looks like in actual lighting? If it looks like this in normal lighting conditions:

Then I'm going blue. But if it looks like this in normal lighting conditions:

Then I'm gonna go for red. Thanks for any input

Define 'normal lighting'. Depending on lighting the blue looks like the upper as well as the bottom one. I don't like either tones to be honest. I mean look at the red one above :D
And it looks even better in person!

In regular sunlight, I guess.

I'm leaning towards the red as it's solid instead of metallic (I think?) plus it looks better with black and I really only like the Blue when it has a solid look and not a metallic one. :/

The pic of my red one is made in natural lighting conditions (sunlight). I assume the lighting source in both of the pics you posted is artificial. The red has a metallic look as well, more so under artificial lighting, but the red is still stronger and more saturated than the blue imo.

Can someone take a picture of the unit being brandished by a robotic T-rex? I'm curious what it looks like.
Juuuust kidding...don't hurt me!

Is the yellow screening specific to Europe's early release, or have instances of it been reported over here in the US? I'm wondering if it's a region-specific problem. Please forgive me if this information has already been touched on.

Anyone else scared of buying a launch system from Nintendo?

My DS Lite was atrocious in build quality.
It has cracked hinges, horrible D-pad and weak shoulder triggers.
Nope, Nintendo has never worried me. As far as recent systems go, I had zero problems with my day one GBA SP, DS fat, DS Lite, Wii, or 3DS. I'm more sketched out by Sony and exponentially more sketched out by Microsoft.

I don't have a robotic t-rex, but is a bull alien good enough? :p

WAS IT SPEEDING? OMG OMG OMG LAWL

I can't wait to pick one up this week. Does anyone know of any good grips for it? I'm all about comfortability over portability since I game almost entirely at home.

This is not me being a Nintendo apologist - I've suffered slight marks too(never scratches), but it really is simple:

Nintendo will fix the device, free of charge under warranty. They will cover the shipping cost and they will reset the full warranty period, too. They transfer your stuff to a new unit, if need be, without using one of the 5 system transfers. The process takes under 2 weeks - not like the RROD where the system would keep dying and you were months without system.

If it marks, Nintendo will try to appease you.

The only company that's done a shit job in trying to address my hardware issues is Sony. Microsoft replaced my RROD 360 faster than Nintendo replaced my 3 Wiis. Nintendo also did nothing about the hinge on the DS Lite that simply fell to pieces after nothing but normal use. Nintendo's good about returns under warranty though. Really good. They are abysmal when it comes to transferring your purchases if you lose or have a DSi/3DS stolen. That won't change until they lose this archaic e-shop policy of linking my purchases to my hardware instead of to me. I have no problem buying the XL because I know if its defective Target will take it back, but I do have trepidation about doing so because I know that once I do a purchase transfer I'm pretty much screwed if I do find a problem.

During the transfer you do, the LL screen is yellow, and the 3DS screen is not.

This is not a tint. This is two different colors being presented on both screens. Perhaps people have warm screens (I don't), but the yellow color ONLY on the LL screen at the transfer time is not a sign of it at all.

I have every single Nintendo home console and handheld from launch, all of them work and none of them ever gave me any trouble, so no. *knocks on wood*

So on friday i receive my white 3DS LL (alongside NSMB2), and i have to say is everything i wish the OG 3DS was.
Being able to play MH3G on that big screen is priceless.

So don't transfer until you're satisfied with the unit ^_^

And above impressions about the sweet spot being easily lost and way smaller, not good news. Not good news to me, at all.
