Gamescom: Castlevania Lords of Shadow 2 - PC version announced

And I will... not cause LoS1 ran like fucking dogshit on the PS3. Sub 20 fps all around.

This time, PC for me. I will not believe MercSteam they "fixed" the framerate for PS3 version of LoS2.

PS3 version hover at 25 FPS, it wasn't that bad IMO. 25 FPS is good enough or so Ive heard around here.

Place your bets ladies and gentlemen :

-GFWL
-Locked at 30fps
-No graphical improvements (same textures as the console versions, no DX11, no additionnal effects, no vsync, no AA)
-Poor optimization
-Bugs/crashes galore
-No post release support of any kind.
-Internal framebuffer of 720p.
-No keyboard & mouse controls.

I don't think they will fuck this up THAT bad man. :/

I'm aboard the PC version train IF it releases same day as console otherwise, 360 for me.

The problem was two fold with the original game.

Yes, the framerate was low and unstable (still higher than the framerate in, say, Ocarina of Time on the N64...but that's not really a good comparison), but it was the animation that made it seem much worse. In particular, I'm talking about the running and jumping animations. The character simply didn't connect well with the ground and jumps felt floaty. I have found that, in games with a low framerate, nailing the animation can actually save the day.

If they had designed more "weighty" animation and locked down the framerate things would have been much better.

By locking down I mean limit to 30 fps max. They allowed the game to jump around wildly and it spent quite a lot of time ABOVE 30 fps (usually around 33 fps) which adds severe judder to the image. It even managed to spike up to 60 at points. The fact that it could jump from a juddery 33 fps to 22 fps just by running forward made it FEEL much worse. You just couldn't count on the framerate and even when it WAS fast enough, it hit uneven numbers for a 60 Hz display.

The 360 version also lacked triple buffering, which helps avoid some of those crazy framerate numbers, but actually results in larger dips. If it couldn't hold 30, it would drop ALL the way to 20 fps. If it couldn't hold 20 it would drop to 15 fps and so on. It was more consistent, but generally much lower.

The best option would have been to stick with triple buffering but prevent the framerate from jumping above 30 fps while delivering better animation and control for navigation.

Still, I think it runs better than Saints Row The Third overall, which wasn't knocked for performance nearly as hard.

I just checked out the DF frame-rate comparison videos and the 360 version seems triple buffered as well with 2-4 frames almost always lower than the PS3 version - it runs at 18, 24, 26fps at times so it must be triple buffered as well, correct me if I' wrong though.

This is great news if they program video options for it. I love CV:LoD, but damn at the screen tearing and low low low FPS on the 360. Adored the game (regardless of el'wacko Ending). Make it so.

In the last generation, PC gamers could play only few zelda/metroidvaina games [batman games, and now darksiders 2].
I just finished both Ys games, and they're a bit reminiscent of Harmony of Dissonance in some ways, although in overhead 3D. Right down to the annoying ass Clock Tower section.

LoS was playable at that Framerate IMO, the only thing that was messed up was the Parry frame window, maybe it was a couple of frames off, it was tricky to be able to use it.

The framerate was the only bad thing about the first game so this makes me so damn happy. Make it steamworks and we're good to go.

I stopped playing the first one because it made my eyes bleed and my brain stutter. All I want is a minimal "good" port like darksiders 1, konami don't fuck this up!

This game is basically nothing like SOTN and the DS games right? Or does it have some kind of metroidvania? Can't say that I'm excited.

Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2 swoops to PC

KONAMI details Windows PC version of its epic saga

Konami Digital Entertainment GmbH has announced that it will release a Windows PC version of its stunning Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2 alongside the versions for PlayStation®3 computer entertainment system and the Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft.

The Windows PC version of Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2 is being simultaneously developed by Madrid-based Mercury Steam, and builds on its critically acclaimed predecessor in every way. The new game features an all-new storyline, a larger cast of characters, huge open world environments and breath-taking visuals delivered via a much more powerful, brand new in house game engine called Mercury Engine 2.

Whereas the first game detailed the origin of Dracula and his legendary connection with the Belmonts, Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2, acts as a shocking finale to the Lords of Shadow saga, as Dracula returns once again; weakened and yearning for release from his immortal bonds. Facing a new and powerful threat, the vampire lord must amass his old powers – and his castle is central to regaining his abilities.

“Castlevania: Lords of Shadow successfully rebooted the franchise but now we want to go further and exceed people’s expectations on what to expect from the sequel,” commented Dave Cox, Producer of Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2 and Head of Product Planning and Development for Konami Digital Entertainment GmbH. “This new game tells a much broader tale and one that spans centuries. It is a game that pushes whatever format it is on to the absolute limit, and we are delighted that Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2’s rich blend of first-class fighting, deep exploration and rich storytelling are set to delight and enthrall PC users, too. There’s a darkness coming and with our new game engine, we hope to deliver something truly special across multiple formats that will set new standards for action adventure games …”

Stylistically, it felt more like Castlevania to me than any of the DS games. They got way too far away from the European roots with their anime shit.

I loved SotN but I welcome this new direction for the series. LoS was wonderful. In a certain way it was also a back-to-the-roots thing, back to the linear levels and the aforementioned European style.

I'll withhold judgement but I liked the linear design of LOS1 which helped give the game a great "stage based" feel. I really, really hope that they're not pulling some Arkham City "look we have a big open world too!" with this as open worlds honestly don't do a lot for me. In fact I think it can make games pretty fucking boring.

Arkham Asylum did it perfectly. It felt more like Metroid. It was technically open world, but it wasn't super vast, and it all felt nicely interconnected. If LOS2 does that, we'll be good. Or, if it's like Dark Souls.

Nice press release. Liked the part about the spanning centuries story and of course the exploration bit. Enric Alvarez (director) already confirmed that it will be a main component of LoS2 bevause fans demanded it.

Oh, and I think they mean the "stages" are open and not linear, you can't have the same open world for centuries

I loved LoS for what it was, Level design was amazing IMO, but I too love openworld games, I thought AC was amazing in that aspect, Im just glad they are making it bigger.

I put 60 hours on LoS and they were amazing start to finish.

Great news. Mercury Stream did a stellar job with the last game. I can't wait to see what they do with the next one.

Just curious, how many copies did the last game sell?

I don't know exactly but I do believe it was the best selling game in the franchise.
