The Giant Bomb Quick Look Thread 2

I didn't mind wahs at all initially, but now I'm so goddamn sick of that music. I keep going back and forth on getting NSMB2, but just hearing that wah is making me lean towards no.

It's the store and the philosophy surrounding it, not the interface.

Yeah. It's going to be Internet Explorer all over again.

Though to be honest, it's totally the interface, for me. I saw the previous two Windows 8 QLs on Tested.com, and both of them looked cluttered and stupid. Microsoft took steps to try and minimize the stupidity, but instead of having the option to hide what's awful, it just shouldn't be there to begin with.

Sounds like you can't turn off the Metro start menu, either, and that's probably the worst offender for me. I must be the only person in the world who doesn't like opening the start menu and having to type in a search field to find his programs.

Great QL of Mario Bros. Highlights the numerous legitimate issues, good one-liners about coins, money and politics, also shows off that it's a solid game (but not more). Good stuff.

That word game totally had ads running over the right side of the screen, not what I'd want from something running on my PC. And just in general, why would I need a wikipedia app instead of just running the website?

I'm very confused about Metro, it seems like a straight mobile interface port. I mean, I have Blue Stacks installed to remotely control my Android phone - and it's useful for some syncing and stuff, but I would never want to use just mouse and keyboard for that interface because it's just clearly designed with a small screen and touchscreen input in mind. I feel the same about Metro.

The old "buy one, skip one" adage for Windows holding true again? 98 -> Me -> XP -> Vista -> 7 -> 8 -> 9

Honestly the only thing that has ever gotten me to update a Windows OS has been new driver support and DX versions for gaming. Windows 8 doesn't seem to add anything new on that front so I'll probably hold off until Windows 9 and its inevitable DX12 support.

I must be the only person in the world who doesn't like opening the start menu and having to type in a search field to find his programs.

You can functionally still do that, it just looks different. Jeff did it in the quick look, you start typing in metro and your programs start to filter in. So it's not much of an improvement.

Windows 8 looks dumb as hell. I'm not sure why it exists.

Surface. Win8 started off as a successor to win7 then along the line got morthed into some shitty tablet desktop hybrid. I think people would be fine with win8 if there was a win7 layout mode an it would also save the OS if the metro crap eats shit in popularity.

My feeling on Windows 8 is that the tablet product would be better if it didn't ever have to show a desktop and the desktop OS would be better if it never showed a touch interface. have two products. mushing them together results in a bunch of compromises and awkwardness, despite their early protestations to the contrary.

But MS likely figures no one will buy Windows/ Metro for tablets (see: Windows phone 7 sales) if it's not forced onto them as being part of the "real" windows 8 being sold to every OEM, hence this move.

I can't imagine how they think this bundling makes their OS product and UI better, so I guess it's being done like this out of some business-related reason.

This is completely the wrong thread for this but fuck it. For someone with W7 and no touch interface devices, what does W8 actually notably bring to the table / improve upon?

The only thing I've picked up so far (in my admittedly half-arsed fact-grab) is native support for having different desktop backgrounds across multiple monitors.

That quick look almost made me go and get Sleeping Dogs. Can't decide if I should get it on PC and wait many hours downloading it or go out and get it on 360.

PC might be one of the best pc ports of this generation. And it looks amazing at night. And you can get it for $35 right now i think.

Pc version is cheaper and looks way better, I think that's worth a few hours of waiting.
EDIT:
Where at? How big is the game? I'd imagine it would take me at least an entire day downloading. :(
Green Man Gaming with voucher DERHE-RRDER-RINGE. Redeems on steam.
Size is about 5-6 GB for the base game. Another 3.7 for the (optional) hi-res texture pack.

THE LIBERATING KOOPAS. Redistribute dat wealth. Someone should tell Mario, "Mo' Money, Mo' Problems".

Well, I was debating on picking up another game when I picked up The Last Story next week, and that sorta pushed me towards Darksiders 2 instead...

Hate hate hate hate hate hate those. It's the dubstep of recent Nintendo OSTs.
I can't stand them either. None of the NSMB soundtracks are very appealing to me at all.

I thought Sleeping Dogs looked like another severely underwhelming open world game based on the first QL, but then I watched Vinny play it and now I own it. I'm not really sure what happened there, but I'm okay with it.

it's fantastic. the QL doesn't even show all the other side activities you can do. plus there are a lot of really good surprises in some sidequests.

the difference is that Vinny actually likes video games.

Vinny can make any game look fun.

His actions in the quicklook singlehandily made me want to get this game. Will have to wait a while though since i'm pretty broke at the moment.

I just watched the Vinny/Brad Sleeping Dogs QL again. I think I'm at a point where I would much rather watch them play a good game that they are enjoying instead of watching them play bad games that they just make fun of. Also, Brad mentions that the game has a benchmark. It's a rare option but I appreciate it every time. It makes tweaking settings a lot easier. Strange thing is, when I think about it, more (good) console ports have benchmarks than PC exclusives. Off the top of my head recent games with benchmark options that I can think of are Batman AC, Just Cause 2, Mafia 2 and GTA IV.

Also The Last Remnant and all Capcom fighters.

DMC 4 and RE 5 have really good benchmarks. So did FEAR back in the mid-00s.

New QL - Double Fine Happy Action Theatre EX.
Really fun stuff. The minecraft business was fantastic. I don't have a Kinect but out of all the games I've seen them play on GB the two Happy Action games look like the most suited to the concept, they look like great fun. No Hot Dog Patrick but there is a guest Hot Dog!
