The Giant Bomb Quick Look Thread 2

I haven't been a big fan of the beta for some of the reasons mentioned in this thread. Things like stage hazards don't seem to have a point when they just knock you back, and a lot of times when I was sent flying backwards I felt like it didn't matter even if they built some meter. Then when you get hit by a super, you just instantly vanish in a poof, it's not satisfying like the great sound effect in smash when you spike someone down.

I watched the Playstation All-Stars QL, and man, I'm trying to keep an open mind about this game, but every time I see it, it just looks so boring and uninspired as fuck. It's not even any fun to spectate.
Same thoughts here, unfortunately. I really wanted to like it having just got a PS3 recently, but yeah it seems to lack something. It looked very...sterile. Crash is really my biggest disappointment.

Also I still can't believe they didn't differentiate the meter color when you've reached certain levels. Going from blue to 25% darker blue makes no sense.

Hey Gaf, what was the quick look when Vinny was in the green suit and was the creepy invisible man? All I know is that Jeff and Brad were in it and it was a Wii game.

So I bought KSP after watching the Quick Look and messed around with it a little, got a rocket (basically) to space, but out of fuel once I'm in space, so I just crash down on to the planet again. I take a look at the Wiki entry for basic orbiting and apparently you need a PhD in physics to get a rocket into orbit. PC GAMES!

Haha, it's not that difficult to get a basic orbit. Now if you want a perfect circular orbit then it's a bit more work. Look for youtube tutorials on how to do it. You can also try MechJeb which is a plugin that add some assists and autopilot functions.

This looks very boring beyond the juxtaposition of magic chalk and drab favela (not that the graphics or art design are up to snuff... comparisons to Pan's Labyrinth really hurt it). The puzzles could get more involved, but the way you go about solving those puzzles will probably make them quite tedious. This is very different from something more fast-paced like Portal.

It is funny how they say "less is more"/Team Ico when this game looks like it going to be heavy handed as hell. I think any chance of that went out the window when the game broke into "SLOOOOW MOTTTTIOOON dramatic symbolic useless moment". Also, christ, the father is a portrayed as a literal monster lol.

Well, I think it's heavy handed in a children's book kind of way. It looks like it's fairly polished and decent, but can't jump the barrier to really grab the player.

Fits right into a long line of "almost great" smaller games this year along with QC, Vessel, QUBE, Unmechanical and tons others. All proper, nicely produced games that nobody will talk about in a couple months.

That said, I at least respect the mission statement from the developer's site:
we are an independent studio with big goals. Minority is the home for passionate and experienced creators who could not stand to develop yet another shooter game
Yes.

This video will make it seem much easier:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BCZRF9o8ytc

Once you get the hang of it, it's a piece of cake. So is getting to the Mun, actually. Landing is slightly more difficult.

I played about half of the content in Papo & Yo's QL (it was a demo) and enjoyed it quite a bit. The QL didn't do a great job of selling it; even though the puzzles were admittedly simple, Ryan pretty much knew exactly where he was going throughout. When playing for the first time, I think it gives you a better opportunity to soak up the atmosphere and puzzle solving.

I feel like the ostensible heavy handedness comes from the way the game has been marketed. There are some explicit bits obviously, but most of the context would probably have been pretty subtle if it hadn't been hammered into our noggins this entire time what the game is about.

Papo & Yo does seem like a pretty heavy handed 'fantasy' take on alcoholism.
Hell the dream sequence in the quick look was screaming drunk driving to me.

I feel I little bit more subtlety would have helped the game more.
Also the frame rate looked really funky in the video. Especially when Monster was doing anything.

Papo looks kind of interesting, but nothing great, if the version their playing is indicative of the final code, it's tearing too much me. Although everyone seems to be attracted to the fact it relates in some way to the creator's childhood, that actually puts me off, it seems very in your face.

I do agree it has some sort of Team ICO-ness about it's design though.

I gotta say this started to annoy me a little bit. Sure, it's frustrating to watch someone struggle with a puzzle game and they're trying to avoid that after some harsh feedback. But the "I just played all of this, let me just run through it again quickly"-approach does not do much for me either.

Something of a catch 22, sadly.

What I would suggest for these sorts of games is, using this example, Ryan play through the QL section of the game earlier, and then have Vinny play it during the QL itself. I think that would achieve a good balance, where if a particular puzzle is proving too frustrating, the answer can simply be revealed by Ryan.

Man that Kerbal Space Program quicklook had me in stitches. I must own that game.

Vinny wasn't fucking joking when he said those were big engines.

Just saw the Sound Shapes QL, tad disappointed watching it. As a platformer it seems much more simple than I was hoping for. I'll need to get hands on with it first, is there a demo for Sound Shapes?

UK guy here so SCEE screwed me over with the release date

Somehow thought there was more to this game. It has a decent charm to it, but it's really just a light platformer with a largely inconsequential music gimmick. I'm not entirely sure what I was expecting, but that was underwhelming.

yeah, basically this.

no demo unfortunately. i'm a plus member so i went ahead and grabbed it since it was only 12 bucks for vita and ps3 version. playing it with headphones on my vita is pure sonic gaming bliss. love the damn game. if you have the cash, just buy it.

edit: very fun platformer. a little on the easy side and very simple but the blend of action and sound is amazing.

I don't think there's a demo. I think if you have plus and a vita, it's not a bad price. The platforming really is the weakest part of the whole package. The music and music creation is definitely the most intriguing things. For that price it's a nice introduction to music creation because it's much easier to use than something like the Korg iPad apps.

Transformers definitely isn't my thing, but it was fun listening to the devs talking about the process. I've just never been a transformers fan. Made me laugh when he started going into the three big things they wanted to address from the last game to the current and he told Ryan he was swore he was answering his question, haha.
DEVELOPER MENU NOT FOR HUMAN EYES

Great looking little title. I saw Alex give it a 5/5, and I'm a little surprised just going off of my first impressions. It looks like a solid little game, but I wouldn't have guessed he'd like it so much.

I think I kind of preferred the Super Brothers level to the first one they were at. Cracked me up on Jeff's custom level when Vinny told him to keep going left, haha
Such a mellow looking title.

Man, this just did not look like a very fun game. I hope that's because it's in beta, but geez... I was not liking the approach with the whole 3 level bar thing. The levels are still the most interesting aspect of it, but it definitely isn't enough to win me over at this stage.

Why isn't there an open world Dinosaur game where they just drop you on a land mass the size of Just Cause 2?

Or just give me another Dinosaurs for Hire. Replace the Army of Two guys with Dinosaurs in leather jackets

Papo & Yo is certainly interesting, but it also seems kinda boring.

I like the whole idea behind the game and where they went with the content of the story, though. Not something you see a ton of in games.

Primal Carnage looks like a fun i'll-just-get-online-and-play-a-couple-of-games-game! Too bad it's PC only. I tweeted one of the devs and told him they should put it on PSN (pinged Jeff Rubenstein while i was at it).
