• Hey Guest. Check out your NeoGAF Wrapped 2025 results here!

Guild Wars 2 Launch Date announced: August 28th, 2012

It's a Radeon HD 5850. I'm using the latest 12.8 drivers, but I was having the same problems with 12.6 as well.

I realized that the VRAM test I ran on it was only able to address 512 megs and it has 1GB of RAM, so I'm rerunning VMT in Windows instead of from the boot disk to see if that makes a difference.

Bah, slept in a few minutes too long to win my little "Get the post at the top" game. Oh well, close enough.
You guys have been clicking the image for awesome songs, right? Tomorrow is my favorite.

(Assuming you have access to the 3-day headstart, and if you don't, why not?)

GAFGuild Mega-Awesome Pre-Launch Super-Countdown Festival of Hype Mumble Meet & Greet Event!

Here's another opportunity for everyone to hop on Mumble and get to know their future guildmates before launch. Even if you don't have a microphone, you can still participate since Mumble has a chat window. If you don't want to speak up, that's fine too; talking is not mandatory and you're welcome to just log in and listen (keep the creepy stalker breathing to a minimum though).

The event will begin on Friday, August 25th at Midnight (9PM on the 24th Pacific, 4am GMT) and run for 3 hours. At this point, the game launches and everyone officially has license to freak out. This event is strictly B.Y.O.K (Bring Your Own Kool-Aid). Please note that ArenaNet has stated they may start the game up to 3 hours early, so you might as well get on mumble and spam the Login button with the rest of us.

Mumble Info:
(Quote post for info)

So how are invites to the GAF guild going to work on the 25th? I imagine it will be beautiful chaos as gaffers spam for invites.

The officers will post their character names and you'll whisper them for invites. When doing so, you'll want to include your GAF name so we can check you off the list.

Definitely register on GAFguild.com- it's a great forum infrastructure and general, and an excellent way to engage with any of the officers or more active members in a small-scale environment.

edit: Feel sorry for anyone who is experiencing this as their first MMO- all others are going to seem so, so very antiquated in comparison until the masses start playing catch-up :P

Hmmm... not sure then. I know NVIDIA has an issue with 500 series cards with the driver stopping and restarting due to low voltage - which is easily remedied with a bump from an OC utility. I'm not up on ATI stuff.

You're looking at it the wrong way. This being your first MMO means you aren't loaded down with the now-useless baggage that other MMOs force you to learn.

Plenty of us have never played an MMO before because we didn't want to deal with that garbage. ;) I'm still not interested in playing any other MMOs.

I'll take a look around and see if I can find anything. Thanks!

That's how I see it too.

Though for someone like me who comes from Asheron's Call as their first MMO, which had a very loose questing structure and open-ended advancement model - this is a return to glory.

Yikes. So, I was doing the Windows VRAM stress test and it BSODed. Probably means the card is bad then...

I'm going to have to try another couple things, but warrantying/replacing the card may be it. I did see claims online that AVG can cause BSODs, which sounds suspect? But I'll try replacing it with something else anyway, and retry the RAM test.

Wasn't looking at it the wrong way so much as joking

I'm actually incredibly jealous of anyone experiencing this as their first MMO. No bad habits to shed.

Well....the silver lining to this whole thing, is at least it didn't happen next Friday!

That and they get to experience that magical feeling where the game world feels infinite.

Very, very true! That would have been the worst.

So now I just need to check who my warranty is with. I think it might be with the computer shop in another province where I had it built... so I wonder if I can still get it warranteed through there? Hm.

In regards to getting into the GAF guild:

Easiest way to handle this is PM an officer or guild leader in-game with the /w name message command. Just include something like "Hey this is Jira can I get an invite?". This makes it so we can simply rightclick your name in chat and invite from there.

So for first time MMO players, that command typed out would be like /w Jira Hey this is Jira can I get an invite?

Wondering if you guys are going to have a problem with a company rep trying to hang with the Gaf Guild?

I'm not able to play mondo super hours but I usually get 1-2 hours of gaming in per evening.

Cheers,
Tony

Oh, I wasn't trying to start an argument. I'm envious of people who are leaping into the genre for the first time with GW2 too. No memories of doing laps around Orgrimmar / Shattrath / Darnasus / Orgrimmar again while waiting for people to log on or someone to answer your spam. No ultra-silent LFG-based runs where everyone just charges ahead and doesn't stop or speak except to complain. No DKP, drama over loot, screaming in vent, mandatory raid times, zerg-based PVP, gear grinds, Gearscore elitists. No logging in because you're paying for it and having zero interest in anything you can do. No wandering around the world to explore and finding the edges the developers created are both frequent and obvious, making it clear you're in a lazily designed game not an open world. No server queues, no waiting for BGs to pop. No Alliance Boycott of AV making the queues 4 hours long. No fighting to a resource node only to have someone drop out of the sky and steal it. Stomping an attempted ganker only to have them use glitches to run off and fly away. Playing a low level alt and getting ganked by a level 70 character in top tier gear. Endless guild drama fighting over raid slots. Meeting new people at work who play and not being able to play with them unless one of you abandons your existing social network or starts from scratch. Bumping into cool people via cross-server LFG and never being able to meet them again. No waiting 9 months for content that you beat in a few weeks, farm for a month or two and never set foot in again. . . . I could keep this list going all day.

A few years ago somebody wrote an article called "5 reasons MMOs are Broken". The article is gone, but I've found the reasons he gave;
  • 5) Subscription fees
  • 4) Aggro / threat
  • 3) Skill / Button Bloat
  • 2) Static worlds
  • 1) You can't play with the people you want to play with.
All of that is gone and playable in less than a week.

Wondering if you guys are going to have a problem with a company rep trying to hang with the Gaf Guild?

As long as you're not logging in just to sell us stuff (even if I do love shopping on Amazon), I don't see any problem.

LOL he's cool man. Tony has been awesome and generally really likes games, unlike some other company guys on GAF. Just let us know when you get in Tony, we'll have an invite for you.

Oh and also what i'm going to do come launch is get all of the officers character names in game and then i'll post in the OT as well as over on GAFGuild.com (which really should be the first place to go for Guild related stuff) that way you can try one of us in order to get that invite.

I knew I was looking forward to this before (enjoyed GW1, despite its flaws), but after playing the stress tests in the last few weeks, I'm so incredibly hyped. WvWvW and sPvP is so much fun.

Does anyone know how long (in general) the story lines for each character will be? As in what level will it take to complete?

Well, this is just going off of the first couple of personal story quests, but I doubt they are all that long. Maybe they get longer and more in-depth after level 30, but who knows. Im sure the final personal story quest has a level suggestion of 80

Desolation or Gandara, help me decide!

Gandara so you can play with GAF

I'm interested in signing up for the GAF guild but I would like to know how hardcore of a guild are we going to be. Can you tell me the sort of atmosphere we will have? Are we going to be leveling in WvWvW or in PVE or both?

We're going to be fairly casual, though people are free to be as hardcore as they like about whatever aspect of the game interests them, and we already have some people forming up their own groups to focus on PVP and such.

Basically GAFGuild is there so you have a large community of GAFers to play with. Lots of different people with lots of different tastes, basically. Something for everyone.

Since you can multi-guild and guest, you're really able to play with who you want whenever you like. If you want a more hardcore experience, you can certainly do that if you like.

If you prefer watching a video I highly suggest the YOGCAST spotlight videos:

http://www.youtube.com/user/BlueXephos/videos?query=guild+wars

They got one for every class and are entertaining and informative.

Noooooo! Not Yogscast. They're more about being silly than informative and they can't play for shit.

Well count me in then! I'll go sign up on the website.

Anyway, I can agree that Yogcast is definately quite silly but I couldn't find anything better that is short and to the point. You know any other video series/casts?
