Republican Senate Nominee: Victims Of ‘Legitimate Rape’ Don’t Get Pregnant

So you think you can rape?

What’s the difference between legitimate and illegitimate rape? We’ve compiled this helpful guide from what we assume Todd Akin (B.S. in Management Engineering and member of the House Science and Technology Committee, just to recap) believes.

Scenario 1: A white virgin female wearing modest clothing is returning to her home after her Wednesday Bible study class. She is accosted at knifepoint by a large, unkempt black man wearing an “Obama 2012” hat, who drags her into an alley and rapes her.

Determination: Legitimate rape. Her uterus shuts down immediately, expelling the rapist’s semen as she prays to God for forgiveness.

Scenario 2: At a party where alcoholic beverages are being consumed, a young woman passes out in a private bedroom. A man of the same age and race finds her and proceeds to have sexual relations as she sleeps peacefully.

Determination: Illegitimate rape. Because the woman’s own moral turpitude is entirely to blame for the situation she was placed in, her uterus is unable to resist her beau’s sperm. It is quite likely that God will bless her with a pregnancy.

Scenario 3: A woman arranges to meet a date she met online at an art gallery. He is boorish and three inches shorter than his profile suggested. She agrees to go back to his apartment only to tell him that she does not want to see him again. But at soon as they get inside he assaults her brutally, keeping her prisoner for three days.

Determination: Illegitimate rape. Because she did not use a Todd Akin-approved dating service (Christian Mingle or eHarmony), the woman in this scenario is responsible both for her own predicament and the child God will now bestow upon her.

What the hell is "legitimate" rape by the way? This whole narrative of old, crusty white dudes trying to define rape is absolutely hilarious.

It's a good example of rape culture in America. He's trying to distinguish between the rapist who jumps out of the bushes to attack a victim and the rapist who takes his victim on a date and waits until she's passed out. He's creating a distinction between rape that requires physical violence and rape where the victim knows the rapist. By his logic, a husband can never rape his wife, a woman can't be raped when she is too drunk to consent, and a rape can not occur if the woman agreed to be intimate with the rapist but at some point decided she wanted to stop. In the latter circumstances, the rape is "illegitimate" and it is actually the victim's fault - or so the repugnant line of thinking goes.

Man, there are no words. Contrary to what knee jerk reaction gaf believes, this guy isn't representative of the right. But still, this scumbag is certainly making a case for supporting the left. Keep digging that hole GOP.

I don't understand this argument. He's literally representative of the right.

Seriously. Don't go mistaking this popularly chosen representative of the right as representative of the right! We wouldn't want to be unfair! Fucking A.

Same for me when I was in school. For us though we had actual reusable tickets that we had to give the cashier. Every morning in home room we'd be called up to reclaim our tickets. It was humiliating.
Our country is so fucked up, that shit is horrible man. I'm sorry. :(

Everyone should vote this guy in.

Seriously.

Just think about the fallout from the Republicans scrambling to rationalize yet another War on Women from the GOP.

It'd be another crack in the rapidly-splintering party.

Which is exactly what American politics needs, a new third option.

One hell of a schism coming, methinks. Present-day Social conservatives versus the "We don't want to be associated with vampires" conservatives of tomorrow.

Oh fuck. I just paid closer attention to this and realized it was Todd Akin that said this.

He was/is the representative from my district (never voted for him though.)

The scary thing is, this senate race may actually be pretty close, as Akin has had the district on lockdown for years, though appealing to the broader audience of the entire state will be more difficult.

Is this a nominee-nominee, or just a nominee?

He's been a Republican congressman since 2001 and he's now the Republican nominee for senate against the Democratic incumbent.

This isn't the first mind-numbingly stupid thing he's said, by the way. He wants to get rid of the morning after pill as well, and he's tried to redefine rape with some congressman named Paul Ryan. Google "forcible rape," but be sure to have some hard liquor handy.

I just don't understand politics anymore. How the fuck has this not already ended his campaign? I mean, if it somehow doesn't, what exactly would he have to say to bring his campaign to a screeching halt? How has such toxic rhetoric become the norm for a political party who's values reflect a very significant portion of the electorate?

This thread leaves me with far too many questions.

I can't tell if this is cleverly done or if you don't follow politics at all. well done.

Missouri is on a heck of a run lately. We may need to update G-A-F. G hasn't been producing for a long time.

I can't see how this will not happen.

A New Republican party/GOP split. Yey for the tea baggers. What would their colour be? I vote Purple.

It would be fitting, considering the Republican Party started as a splinter of the Democratic Party. Their color would probably stay red though, and the other splinter would be ID'd with purple.

I always find the map of states by the makeup up their State Senate interesting.

then you put it next to the pic of who they've elected to the federal US Senate:

So... If a woman gets pregnant after a rape she wasn't (legitimately) raped at all? Did I get this right?

In that guy's opinion, yeah

and as such she shouldn't be allowed the abortion because she willingly opened her legs or something equally vile and Republican

lol and this guy is leading the polls? why?? mind you, I'm not from the US, so I don't get the mindset

He's leading the polls due to almost four years of "the democrats are godless, socialist, baby aborting assholes that want to ruin Amuurrriica" rhetoric.

Well, more seriously he's leading the polls because he just won a 3-way race to see who could go up against McCaskill and is riding that wave of momentum.

It's why he won the primary, in any case.

What do the black, purple and blue with green stripes represent?

Nah, he's leading in the polls cause Missouri is hurting right now. Unemployment is still sky high and most people blame it on Obama and the Democrats. The influence of STL and to a lesser extent Kansas City have gone down as people have slowly fled the Saint Louis metro area, leaving the rural, Republican base to be a bigger portion of the population.

God, even if the Republicans have some alright philosophical ideas, them bringing them into the real world basically is terrible for anyone but the 1%. I can't even support anything out of these people anymore.

These last 2 years have been the first time in 4 decades the Minnesota legislature was controlled completely by the republicans.

Think black is a unicameral legislature. Where they have one body of congress and not house/senate.

And Minnesota should flip back to blue in the state house/senate.

Yeah, Vermont has Bernie Sanders and Conn. has Joe Lieberman as Independents.

Missouri has now joined Arizona on my "states to never live in" list.
It's true we have some terrible neo-con and hick citizens in this state and I mostly blame our proximity with Kansas. However...this guy is NOT and will NOT be representative of Missouri. I will make sure of that.
I was on the fence about voting, but if I don't vote, and this guy gets elected, I'll be devastated.

I'll do my part, MO-GAF.
Word. Is the election for representatives in November as well? I'm trying to get as many people around me who are on the fence about voting to make sure they do just to keep this guy out of power.
