Hahahaha, people are comparing 3D and pretty, overpriced CGI to the invention of synchronized sound.

Wow.

Just digging yourself in deeper. With each post you demonstrate you don't know what you are talking about. Denying 3D is a major advancement is one thing - it is - but you really should brush up on everything else about Avatar.

I consider an advancement of the making of motion pictures the ability to direct scenes in a 100% virtual environment, allowing the director the most direct control possible over the shots of his film, as well as the ability to edit and change scenes on the fly AFTER the performance has been captured and the actors no longer available.

But you know, hurhur, CG, LOL

Well... let me ask you this... what do you consider to be an advancement of the cinema experience? And who do you think is pushing the "art" of cinema in 2012?

No one person is pushing the art of cinema, but the invention of things like iPhones, YouTube, special apps, and others making it possible for ANYBODY to make a movie and do various things with it is far more important than James Cameron's stuff.

And no artistic dignity? On what grounds can you legitimately make such an assertion? Was the world of Pandora not his own creation? His story is simplistic no doubt, but there is MUCH more to a movie beyond a story.
Visually it was interesting but isn't that like... to the credit of the artist who worked on the film, and not Cameron?

Considering that Cameron himself was involved as a designer, nevermind how detailed the scripts are regarding the visual design, how specific his actual requests are to the other designers and modelers, and of course as director obviously has final say on anything design related, then well...yeah I guess he doesn't deserve any credit whatsoever.

Come on guys, anybody could have made Avatar.
Yeah, dude obviously just sat in his house smoking cigars made out of $1000 bills (yeah $1000 bills), and barked orders, waiting for people to make the movie. I mean, what else do you expect from someone ZERO ARTISTIC DIGNITY!

To give the job of writing the script to someone competent.

Argues someone has no artistic dignity.

Recommends that said person should just let other people write their movies rather than them owning it 100%

Is it just me or is that kinda funny?

Not hard to make up big trees, fancy lights, and big blue cats. And then ripping off everything else known to man.

People without artistic dignity can still write scripts, bro.

People who don't have massive, douchebag egos should realize they can't write worth shit and pass the script along to someone who doesn't write, quite possibly, the worst lines I've ever heard in a gigantic blockbuster.

Both Aliens and The Abyss are absolutely fantastic scripts. So again, you don't know what you're talking about.

When your scripts are responsible for some of the most iconic and successful movies of all time, who in their right fucking mind would think they need to hand control over to someone else.

The script to Avatar in no way shape or form shows any need for Cameron to hand over writing duties to anyone else. Once again, critical AND commercial success (on a level not shared by any other director on earth).

Was he actually drawing the designs, making the models, and deciding which to animals to mash together to make a 'new' one, etc? I'm not saying nor have I ever (so I don't know where you're getting THAT from) that he doesn't deserve some credit for what was the best part of the movie (the CG/the visuals), I'm just saying that I give much more credit to the.... actual artist who made the... art.

For the record, I like Avatar and saw it 3 times in theaters (granted, I did work at a movie theater at the time so it was all free).

Cameron did many of the drawings. He designed Neytiri and you'll find pretty much everything in the film looks EXACTLY how he described it in his original treatment.

He designed and personally drew several of the creatures, the Navi are pretty much his own design as well. You can see his own artwork in the various Making Of and Art of books for the film.

Of course other designers had a pass at all that stuff, but he ended up using a lot of his own designs, the Na'vi went through TONS, but in the end it was his original sketch of Neytiri that pretty much set the tone.

Ah, yes, I see it now. He was reminding me of someone else whom I still can't place, though. (Plus, I thought the actor on the right was Biehn in that gif) :)

Goddamn, the Avatar creatures all looked so dumb. Like Final Fantasy rejects.

And I'm not gonna lie, the
tree burning sequence
was one of the most gratifying movie theater experiences of my life. Not because I felt bad for them. No, the opposite. I was so happy to see it happen. Something finally actually happened in the movie.

You are the very definition of a tryhard.

So is mana being serious in this thread or am I just missing the joke here? Again, I think Avatar is pretty average, but some of what he's saying is just ridiculous lol

Man, every time I see this thread I get hopeful and imagine that they may actually start production sometime 'soon'. I really hope this film gets made, I can only imagine how amazing it will be on the eyes.

Btw, whats going on with the Disney Avatar park?

Just look at this little guy!

I like this dude too.

I really dig the second creature, so cool looking. Man, I wanna re-watch this sometime soon.. It just looks so nice on Blu Ray.

I'm putting this list of blu-rays to pick up soon. Is the extended version (and whatever the third version is called) worth it though? I will say I think Cameron's cut of Aliens is better than the theatrical cut.
