Is PSN really this bad?

I had some extra money left from a PSN card, and decided what the fuck, I haven't played Darksiders, Darksiders 2 is getting all this attention, and I could use some Zelda-esque action in my life, so why not. So I buy Darksiders 1 off the PSN store. I would rather have a physical copy as I would be playing it right now but I only had Sony bucks. I expected a slow download for the 10 gig title, as PSN has always sucked in that regard. Cut to a few minutes ago. I'm about 4 hours (and a whopping 50%) into the download when my internet cuts out for about 30 seconds, comes back on. I check on the download and it is giving me an error message and has kicked me out of the store, and my only option is to start the entire download over again. Really? You weren't saving any of that progress? Am I missing something here? An option someone in the downloads/management screens?

Nah it should keep track of download progression, I've cut out a few times and the downloads were ok.

Might help if you google the error code it's giving you

Overall though psn annoys me, it's so slow now and my pc with ssd has spoiled me - I really don't turn the thing on much, I'm only keeping it around for the last of us and god of war and a handful of other titles

if you had downloaded the game outside the store (background download /in the xmb) you would not have this problem since when your dl is in the xmb you can resume anytime

So basicly thats not sony the problem but you...

Wait... did you not start background download of the content?

If not... you done goofed, sir

i heard many time that if you download on the playstation store (no background) it goes faster. I doubt its true but... Thats maybe why he did it.

I'm not sure why it's so awful on my PS3, but it's always been that way across 3 PS3s, both wired and wireless, with and without a router. No idea why. PSN via my Vita is significantly faster. Even services that don't go through PSN on my PS3 have trouble maintaining speed. I gave up trying to find an answer as to why long ago. I simply use my 360 for demos and video apps instead unless its a demo for a PS3 exclusive.

I don't know what you are talking about. I've never EVER had any problems with downloads (slow speed aside) even when I turn it off and restart it later.

correct me if im wrong but if you had downloaded the game outside the store (in the xmb) you will never had this problem.

I guess that's it. I usually do download in background but this time I just left it on, had to leave and run some errands and wasn't going to use the PS3. Why even give you the option then? What the fuck is the point of downloading directly on PSN?

- background downloading is a bit faster.
- wired PS3 are MUCH faster.
- check what's your NAT type by doing a connection test. If you're NAT3, the slowness is your fault...

because there's no point in preparing the background download for really small files. For 10 GB, though... um, yeah

I have no idea what happens if you do not specify to download in the background, but if you do (wisely) select that option, you would definitely not have had this problem.

Are you sure it isn't just sitting in your active downloads list anyway?

This Lakers fan self-entitlement complex is getting out of hand.

But seriously, dat background download. Why were you sitting in the PS Store? I wasn't even aware that there were PS3 users who didn't use background download.

it's been a while since I used Live but with Xbox does it basically automatically download in the background? I wonder why Sony doesn't use that same system instead of having the option.

PSN downloads are incredibly slow for me at home and at work (where I routinely pull 10-15 megabytes a second from Steam). I assume they're throttling transfers significantly. You get what you pay for?

So Sony's terrible download interface has nothing to do with it? There's nothing on the console to indicate background downloads can resume but store ones can't. Hell, I didn't know that until I looked at this thread. That's just plain bad.

Yeah, background download never has this problem. At least now I know not to download in PSN, and I'm rather shocked at the jank you experienced.

I can download from three different accounts and watch them all finish while I play another game.

Was this silly thread title really necessary OP?

There's something to indicate that downloading directly from the store makes no sense. It's called background download.

Absolutely not. There is nothing bad about PSN. You are right. I should have just downloaded 3 different things at once and then played a 47 hours of Marvel vs Capcom so I could watch them all finish.

Peak time perhaps?

Wireless?

Yesterday I literally downloaded the Sleeping Dogs demo at around 2mb a second (Wired connection).

You know, I'm really starting to wonder, everyone says PSN is slow, but how slow is it, really?

I typically (through wi-fi) download off PSN at around 1-1.5MB/s, which is close to maxing me out (in other words, that is fast for me). When you say you expect 10-15, well I'm not sure whether to laugh or cry.

If you guys who call PSN slow are really downloading at 1-1.5MB/s, well fuck every last one of you :|

Or you could read my next topic idea

"Is <something large which has many components> bad?"

containing the message:

"Hey guys, this one thing didn't work out for me."

Why doesn't it just automatically use background download for large files? Why force the user to think about this?

Because the store interface auto-installs, which makes it ideal for smaller downloads, like unlock keys and DLC.

The way Sony's file system is set up means they can't do it like Xbox does it.

They've had the bubbles since day one and they can't get rid of them, apparently.

I leave my PS3 to download the majority of files whilst still on the store. Is it just a myth that it's faster?

I use wireless and my download speeds are around 10mbs per sec or whatever....but I still download demos and full games fast.....MUCH faster than my old AT&T DSL 2.5mb service. >:(

I think its your internet, guys. Here in Korea I get 60-100mb/s and have no problems downloading large files in a timely manner. Its a slower rate than it should be though, but I figure that's because I'm downloading from the US servers.

I believe in the myth!

When background downloading I get about 2MB/s and when i leave the download just sitting there it's about 5MB/s.

PSN must only be slow in America, because here in Japan I get lightning fast download speeds on the Playstation store. Never understood the complaints but would make sense that it's just worse overall in the States.

I like how so many people in here are blaming the OP for not knowing about the intricacies of a shoddily designed piece of software.

Basically it's not intuitive and cost him a few hours because it isn't.

I difn't even know it would do that, but I've never not background downloaded big things. Doesn't mean Sony shouldn't have accounted for it.

Why is everyone bashing the OP? Obviously PSN isn't flawless. I love my PS3 but Xbox Live beats PSN any day. Why didn't PSN background download it automatically?

I like how so many people in here are blaming the OP for not knowing about the intricacies of a shoddily designed piece of software.

it doesn't have to be black or white.

the OP made a dumb mistake. it's also dumb that the download progress was completely lost due to that mistake.

The great thing is it's a mistake that will probably never happen again. Those are the best kind.

PSN really is poorly designed in comparison to XBL and many other major DD services. Going from Steam/XBL to PSN is torture. The speeds are ridiculously slow. I seriously hope Sony put a lot of thought into PSN in the next gen or they're going to burn themselves.

I like how so many people in here are blaming the OP for not knowing about the intricacies of a shoddily designed piece of software.

I like how anyone who actually downloads from the Playstation Store with any regularity knows how it works.

I blame the OP not for pointing out shoddy software, but for using a misunderstanding as a launching point for "Let's go after PSN."

You'll notice how people aren't saying "You're wrong, it's great!"

They're saying "Umm...why didn't you know this?"

It's not intricate at all. I learned over the course of a week.

Never mind.
