3DS XL First Impressions/Previews

This is my first 3DS, and here's a couple games I played.

Super Mario Land-Beat it yesterday, great levels and all.
Started the secret levels and got Luigi
. Highly recommended over NSMB2 is you want more of a Mario 64 style gameplay. It would be great if they brought the multiple quest styles onto the handheld. Currently playing Bowser's Inside Story. It's fantastic like all the other ones, don't know why I never bought it when I had a DS.

Played a little of Kingdom Hearts, and didn't care for the controls. I think it'll just take awhile to get used to. It's my first handheld KH since Chained Memories.

Demos

Played MGS3. Couldn't even see straight with the 3D on, I guess it's all the greenery or something. I have it on PS2 but I couldn't get into it. Seems like a good port though.

Heroes of Ruin, played the Gunslinger, probably try the other guy later today. I've always enjoyed all the Hack n' Slash games on PSP so I'll probably pick this up once the price goes down.

Was disappointed in the Nintendo Video app. I was looking forward to watching 3D trailers, but found out it's just "Watch these 4 random videos and then they'll be replaced with 4 other random videos." Crap.

Wished there was a Theatrhythm demo for NA. Will pick it up someday once the prices go down to normal.

Did you try the Rhythm Thief demo? That's a good one. Not for the 3D, but for the actual gameplay.

I'll check it out, thanks.

How often do you guys completely shut off the 3ds?

Only when I notice something under my screen protector. I think I have everything out from under it now though.

Good 'nuff.

I went to Best Buy today to get Ghost Recon: Shadow Wars since it's only $8 today and noticed that they had a 3DS XL demo unit out. So if you're interested in trying it before you buy demo units are finally out in the US.

Brightness is at 5, 3D off or on looks the same. Hard to explain, but compared to all my other devices, the 3DS XL screens are the dimmest of the bunch.

3D is just hard for us to compare in a light as it muddies the colours is all.

Seriously though, it shouldn't be like that, we've seen enough pics in this thread to show that and I know mine isn't.

You should contact Nintendo over it, something seems wrong.

Not saying his 3ds isn't dimmer than usual, but showing people that image will make them instantly think the worst. Regardless of what your 3ds is like, the only real way of comparing brightness in a photo is to do it side by side with another 3DS. Camera auto exposures always see bright list and expose for them, so by putting your iPhone next to it will under expose.

Again, not saying it isn't a bad one, but a lot of people don,t realise and will just see the dim 3ds.

Could someone please take some pictures like this? It would be very beneficial for those of us contemplating the switch.

I couldn't be happier with the upgrade, and I'm a giant bitch when it comes to visual quality.

Try it out irl I guess, pictures probably aren't the best way.

I do understand the difficulty of getting two 3DS together to do so. Even if the original is slightly brighter, it is so easy to misrepresent brightness if you don't know what you're doing. Just like colour temperature.

Your brain compensates for a lot automatically and has much more dynamic range. Notice how the rest of an indoor room will go black in photos taken with an LCD screen (just look at above shots, for example) - wouldn't it be a funny world if your brain did that?

I've got a raging headache now, but I might be sick.

Anyway, apparently there,s an issue with the cameras which go fluoroscopy yellow under certain lighting, like fluorescent.

Happened to mine last night indoors under those energy bulbs. Oft camera was fine, right was yellow, then both were yellow. This is not a yellow screen thing... The photo becomes this weird green/yellow. Did this happen on the original 3DS? To fix I had to point to a different lit source.

My Zelda 3DS does this in low light conditions too.
The problem is not new to the XL

Probably this isn't the problem for anyone, but maybe, just maybe, it will help for one or two people out there. Make sure "power saving" is set to OFF.

I never had the yellow problem but when I was experimenting with settings I toggled it to "on" and it made my screens REALLY yellow. So potentially power saving is on by default or is less noticeable if "on" a normal 3DS. I did a 3DS to XL transfer so I'm guessing that moved my old settings over. That switch is in the same spot as brightness (top left icon of the bottom screen).

Yeah, I figured as much. Cheap cameras. Thanks!

I read up what power saving does, and apparently it dims the display depending on what the display is showing, like if it's a dark scen, it will be darker. My friend mentioned that it just makes his screen more yellow. It can be true that a screen's discolouring can be more obvious with dim settings.

:(

First Impressions:

- The system is fairly dim, at the highest setting it's pleasantly bright enough though, not a big deal

- Resident Evil Revelations looks washed out on both 3d and 2d, maybe it's just poor screen quality of the 3ds units? Just doesn't look good.

- I can't find a nice way of holding this system without feeling like my thumbs are crunched, the further i hold my thumbs away from the stick and buttons, the more the top heavy nature of the system makes things awkward and the system starts to lean backwards. Maybe a 3ds XL circle pad pro will give me something to grip, otherwise i think i might try a vita instead.

- the bottom left edge of the system is sharper than the right, i notice this since i used to use my pinkies to support the system of the ds and it doesn't transition well

- speakers sound about as expected, same as ds/3ds, none of them are good and so far 3ds xl doesn't stand out as terrible. I'll switch to headphones for futher RE Revelations playing, if my hands can bare it.

- also, i feel like i'm jumping through hoops playing RE Revelations, really needs an actual controller.

Just picked up my 3ds XL and fuck.... It is one impressive piece of tech. When I made it to the home screen the drop in ppi was immediately noticeable. However, as many others in this thread can attest to, you quickly forget about that as you have two huge screens to gawk at :).

I tried out my current library on it and most of my games look astounding! The games I tried out were Resident Evil Revelations, Metal Gear Solid 3, Kid Icarus Uprising, and Kingdom Hearts 3d. The least impressive of the games I tried was Metal Gear Solid 3. The jaggies just weren't done any justice unfortunately. But the game is still very much playable.

I also have a slew (I mean A LOT) of screens of SNES games running on my XL (via Supercard) and it is fucking awesome! It is seriously like playing SNES games on a small CRT TV, the colors just POP :D.

I uploaded my screens on my flickr page here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/flaboy909/page5/ (screens are on pages 1-5)

I'll tease you guys with a couple of sexy SNES screens:

I would love to have my snes collection on the Xl. I need to look into that.

oh so it's "normal" that my new earphones sound low volume, it's the XL itself!!! I thought something was the matter with my earphones lol... what a shame though, especially for games with nice orchestrated music :(

Just played VVVVVV on the XL, and man, that was wonderful. I just played and finished the PC version last night, and it just feels/controls so much better on the XL, either with the circle pad or d-pad. The 3D effect is really nice, too. Not necessary, but it adds some beautiful layer separation that makes the flat sprites really pop. Music is also great via headphones. Doing Things The Hard Way only took me a few tries, too. So good!

The DS SNES emu sucks though.
Indeed. :(

The DS SNES emu sucks though.

I'm emulating those games via Supercard DSTwo. Even though most games run at about 80-100% speed, all of the effects are intact, most games are beatable (except for Yoshi's Island and Kirby Super Star), and they simply look amazing on the XL (the colors are vibrant and and with the improved d-pad, performers are now playable).

Edit: Beaten

I think the DS Movie Player flashcart had a good one because it wasn't a flashcart and just played movies and emulators. It had an extra processor on the card for decoding movies and the developers used to for the emulators too which made the GBA emulator really good but I'm not sure about the SNES emulator.

Edit - Corrected nvm. I think Earthbound still has layering issues in battle.

Even though it's ultimately unnecessary, it would've been nice if they had included the charging stand. Given Nintendo's treatment of the other regions though, I'm not going to complain too loudly.

Otherwise, to me, this is a definite upgrade over the original. Good stuff.

Got my XL today. 3D is alright but you need to have the perfect spot. Move even a cm away and I start seeing double or blurry text.

Anyway, first order of business. How do I delete this crappy dinosaur video and the health and safety regulations?

What?

Dinosaur Office is not crappy :(

Has anyone tried a stylus heavy game on this yet? Like Elite Beat Agents, Theatrhythm? This is one of the first years where I haven't applied screen guards on my consoles (Vita and 3DSXL) and I'm wondering if the stylus leaves behind bad traces.
