Apple started all of this....
Guys you think software patents are bad, you should see the biotech industry. A couple years ago scientists were trying to patent parts of the human genome.
Yeah, that's one of the most worrying ones. Every smartphone in existence infringes on that, if this BS patent is held up.
I have a old droid 2.
Should I be knocking over desks now.. or...?
Haven't been following, but apple won all of the bullshitty patents right? Meaning next they will try to patent holding a phone to your ear to speak..yes..? Something like that?
rage.
I dont understand this. Apple created this feature (ok, well if anyone wants to find some obscure prototype or an unreleased product, FIRST TO BRING TO MARKET), and just because everyone decided to copy it, it makes it "invalid"? Because every phone uses it? I mean, pinch to zoom is one of the prominent features of iOS products.
Theres an app for thatDont worry your organism has ways to avoid pregnancy....
They still are and do.Guys you think software patents are bad, you should see the biotech industry. A couple years ago scientists were trying to patent parts of the human genome.
I wish Samsung would sue them for that, just so Apple can be forced to implement NC in a new and smarter way.How do you feel about iOS notifications? Arguably a much less 'obvious' feature, yet obviously... inspired by Android.
The biotech industry is far better than the software industry. There is a requirement to have very specific uses for discoveries and vagaries will get your patent thrown out quick.Guys you think software patents are bad, you should see the biotech industry. Just one more bullet point about why this system needs fixing
It started (for those who want a link).Vergecast is starting!
By reinventing the smartphone

Me personally? I don't think Apple should get into trouble for seeing a software feature in a competing product and trying to introduce something similar into their own.
Theres an app for that

You know what the funny thing is, all my professors and supervisors think that it helps with innovation and progresses the industry. I'm pretty sure they all have their names on at least one or two patents.

we get pushed to patent ideas at work... ideas. Its dumbYou know what's ridiculous? You have companies now patenting genes and DNA. How this helps innovation and progress is beyond me.
On principle I don't think Apple should get sued for it either, but given the way they've been acting... bring it on. Bring it the FUCK on!
Topolsky seems afraid. Probably fears for his life, considering the comments threads at the verge.

See, comments like these make it pretty obvious that you're not really that bothered by the patent system, it's just the fact that Apple is winning them that makes your blood boil.
So should sega be able to sue namco, capcom, and nether realm for using punches in video games since they(I think) were the first to use that in a videogame with heavyweight champs?
It's absurd and how you don't see that I don't know.
They still are and do.
I would love to hear their arguments about how the current laws governing software patents is good for that sector and encouraging for innovation long term?
Especially in light of some of the absurd lawsuits we've seen recently, this one included.

I have a Samsung Galaxy Nexus phone... what does this mean for me? Is Samsung forced to drop software support?
Most of it would boil down to "there's more than one way to skin a cat". Trying to get around patents can drive just as much innovation. Case in point, slide to unlock patent. Google turned that into a passcode mechanism and bypassed the patent. Voilà, innovation! Instead of everyone sitting around with the dull old slide to unlock feature they've taken it to the next level all because they couldn't copy it.
This is good for innovation. It will require the competition to really start differentiating their designs and features.
Some of the Apple patents should have been invalidated tho. At least the multitouch/pinch-to-zoom one.
Google's notification patent requires an icon to appear in the status bar, if that's what you mean.
Judge Koh reads a note from the jury. They've asked they be sent down which inconsistencies they are deliberating on.
So, just to be clear, when faced with 700 decisions the jury was good to go. But when faced with two decisions, they need some guidance.
