Gamer-approved laptop recommendation thread

So I'm looking for a laptop for some moderate gaming, mainly to play games at lans. I'm trying to find a system with the following specs but I cant seem to find one, anyone know of such a system?

Nvidia GT650M
Intel Core i7 - Quad core, preferably the 3610QM
~15" Display, can be 720p or 1080p I'm not too worried about this
4-8gb of ram
Preferably an SSD above 100gb but if this doesn't exist then I don't mind a normal hard drive, I can replace it later.
As light as possible

Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated!

lenovo ideapad y580. comes with the i7 in either 1366x768 or 1920x1080 screens, gtx660m with 2GB Ram, and some come with HDD+mSSD drive, but even the ones that don't still have a space for an mSSD drive so you can have two drives (or just swap the 2.5" drive out)

As light as possible you say? Retina Macbook Pro

Dont kill me lol

Other than that, check out the Lenovo y580, Alienware M14x (pretty close to 15 inch), Asus N56 with 650m, or HP dv4t-5100 (IVB and 650m).

If you decide to go smaller than 15 inches, Clevo/Sager also has a 11 inch Laptop with a quad core and 650m.

I wonder if anyone can help me out. I'm looking for a laptop that can do some decent gaming, like running most Source games. An SSD and Windows 7 are a must, and I think 4gb of RAM should do the trick. If it comes with an MS Office installation that'd be awesome but if not, it's easily remedied. And at least 15" for the screen should be a good size.

Quick Question, finalizing Sony Vaio S15 purchase.

3rd gen Intel® Core™ i5-3320M processor (2.60GHz / 3.30GHz with Turbo Boost) [ $50.00 ]
3rd gen Intel® Core™ i7-3612QM quad-core processor (2.10GHz / 3.10GHz with Turbo Boost) [ $150.00 ]

Is the I7 update worth it for the extra 100?

I know when I bought my desktop, the i5 I have was on equal footing to the cheapest available i7 update.

Thanks!

The i7 is a Quad Core, while the i5 is a Dual Core.
So I'd say yes, it's a worthy upgrade.

Sorry to quote again, but I'm probably buying this tomorrow or Monday, do you think this will be able to run Borderlands 2 or Dark Souls?

Sounds like you should be looking for something with a 650M.
I'm looking for a laptop in the 800 dollar range that can run games like LoL, Dota, Guild Wars 2(MMO's in general). I've seen a couple people on this page recommend this computer http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834246628 I was just wondering if there are any other options available that maybe better or if it is price better other places.

Straight through Lenovo you can get it with a 1080p screen for like $100 more.
Sager model looked nice, but I know Asus's are quality.

Oh dear, I hope that quote doesn't end up haunting your nightmares.

I bought a Dell Inspiron 15r Special Edition (Inspiron model 1520).

3rd Generation Intel® Core™ i7-3612QM processor (6M Cache, up to 3.1 GHz)
Windows® 7 Home Premium, 64Bit, English
15.6" Full High Definition (1080p) LED Display
8GB3 Dual Channel DDR3 SDRAM at 1600MHz
1TB 5400RPM SATA HDD + 32GB mSATA SSD w/Intel Smart Response
Blu-ray Disc (BD) Combo (Reads BD and Writes to DVD/CD)
AMD Radeon™ HD 7730M 2GB
1080 monitor.
built in web cam, USB 3.0, etc.
It also has an aluminum chassis.

Overall, I am extremely happy with this laptop so far. It lists for $1099, but there are slightly lower versions that are cheaper. It boots up super-fast, and it will run Battlefield 3 with no problems. It runs BF3 on ultra textures, and defaults to medium on most other effects and 4x on AA. I could probably push it up to high on a few of the settings, but I don't even try because it runs great like it is.

The only thing that I've noticed that's unusual is that I have to assign games to run in either a low power or high power state. Low power uses the i7 built in graphics, and high power boots on the video card. It takes a while to get used to this, but once you set your programs, it remembers them and never asks you again. It's pretty easy to set things up, too. This setup is meant to save power.

Overall, I would say that I am extremely happy with this laptop. I bought the $1099 model, but used student discount to save some money and I got the free xbox 360 and a $50 gift card with the "back to school" promo. You can pick more gift card money ($200) instead of an xbox if you call and talk to an operator, and you can put that toward Xbox/PS3/PC games on dell.com, but I just went with the xbox.

Even the $799 model with the i5 should be great for gaming.

Hey guys, I am planning on getting a gaming computer in the next few months for when I go to college. I know GAF isn't the biggest fan for gaming laptops, but a laptop is a lot easier for college than a desktop. My budget is going to be around $1500. Preferably, I would like to play all recent PC games at a high setting. Any suggestions? If something revolutionary is going to come out between now and May, then I will will wait, but I would rather get the laptop around Christmas time. Thanks for the help!

EDIT: Now that I think about it, the budget will probably be closer to $1300, but an extra $200 wouldn't be out of the question.

New Setup, spending a bit extra to hopefully be able to game better

Does Vaio come with a Windows install DVD? Wondering how easy it is to reformat when I get this.

How does it stack up against my desktop? Just curious. Desk specs:

I just bought an asus g55 and now I'm looking for something to carry it in. Anyone know of a nice compact bag to carry a 15.6 laptop, charger, a mouse/mousepad, and maybe like Vita or 3DS? I'm looking for something streamlined and not too bulky.

please tell me how it is, i wanna buy the same one next month

Aye! Waiting to get my financial aid money, then I'll be buying it. Should be this week.

I use a Fossil's manpurs--I mean a messenger bag.

I have one, I like it a lot. i7, 8GB, 64GB mSSd and 1TB HDD, bluray drive, 1080p screen.

Screen is really nice. I was concerned that text and icons would be too small, but it was preset to 125% which is perfectly comfortable to use, and the added space for Lightroom compared to my previous 1366x768 screen is very welcome.

Keyboard is fine, I wish they hadn't bothered trying to squeeze a numpad in though - result is a very cramped set of cursor keys which can be tricky to find when touch typing. Keys feel nice enough though.

Trackpad is great. I'd given up on any windows machines ever getting close to the MacBook pros, but this is really big and smooth and just comfortable to use. Two finger scrolling works well, and I've even left tap to click on (usually I turn it off instantly). I wish I could find a way to use two finger tap as right click, but I can't so far.

Doesn't come with a ton of bloatware which is refreshing, so I don't feel the urgent need to reinstall windows.
I haven't had it long enough to feel whether the HDD/SSD combo speeds things up, but if not then I can always reinstall windows 7 on the mSSD and use the HDD for apps etc.

Anyone? If it's not worth waiting until next year, I'm going to begin computer shopping now. I just don't want to purchase something now to figure out a few weeks later that a better model is coming.

There's always something new coming out. If you wait until next year you will obviously get something better for the same money. It's just something you need to accept and move past. If you're particularly concerned, you could buy something user upgradable.

Within your $1500~ price range, you should be able to get something relatively powerful. Sager is a good option, and Falcon Northwest do desktop replacement notebooks that use desktop components. Alienware, Origin and other boutique brands offer great specs and build quality but you pay a premium. I have a M17x R4 and couldn't be happier with it, but I could've gotten more elsewhere for the money.

If you can get a decent discount or happen across some coupons, an Alienware machine could end up really good value for money. Otherwise you might be better looking at Clevo/Sager machines or something like a G75 from ASUS.

EDIT: If you buy from Powernotebooks or Xoticpc, you can get a Sager NP9150 with an i7 3720QM, 16GB RAM and a 7970m for $1500-1600.

I haven't fiddled with settings, that gets me stuck in an infinite loop of tweaking and does my head in. But they look great so far. Only played a few though - trackmania 2, counterstrike go and minecraft (200fps and runs sonic ethers shaders mod great too)

Need to try out more demanding things like crysis 2, and see how it manages at 1080p, and also see how the screen handles lower resolutions too - eg 1600x900 or 1280x720

Will have a play tonight and post back. Are any good tools I can use for benchmarking that would help?

Some of the cheaper Clevo/Sager models have cheap feeling plastic casing, but the higher end models like the NP9150 have a lovely rubberised coating. Build quality is good, though they're plain to look at. You can choose to have it shop unbranded which is a nice touch I think. Screens have great contrast and viewing angles, and you can upgrade to a matte display for a bit extra if that's something that bothers you.

The backlit keyboard works like those on an Alienware where you can change the colour to whatever through software over three segments... left, middle and right. Best thing about these kind of laptops is that the major components are all easily accessible and user upgradable. If in 12/18 months time you decide that you're graphics card could be better... just buy as new one and upgrade it.

I think the higher end Sagers are good value for money, especially when it comes to price vs. performance.

I only have one questions before I commit and buy myself a new laptop. Will this laptop have the ability to play FFXIV and Guild War 2 on high settings?

I don't have FFXIV, and I hear there are weird performance issues. I don't think 2.0 is doing much for the engine, though I could be wrong, so I doubt that will change. That said, that laptop is a beast and I expect it would easily play both games on high with a pretty good frame rate. Maybe someone with a 660m that plays XIV can chime in, or maybe someone with greater XIV knowledge can chime in about what performance issues it's had in the past.

That's literally my one question, and when that is answer, I shall leap on that site and purchase my new shiny laptop!

would appreciate that :)

So I think I am going to go with the Sager NP9150. Its impressive specs will make its slightly higher price point worth it. The question is...where I should order it. Which website is the most reliable/cheapest for Sager laptops?

EDIT: Well this is just great. I've now been reading that the 7970m is pretty much a mess with the NP9150 because of Enduro. Now I'm back to square one.

If you're not too worried about money Asus are putting out an ultrabook that has the same specs in late october. Might be an extra 100-200 but it would be worth the wait, especially for the portability. It will probably be ~1kg lighter and a lot slimmer according to the ultrabook specs.

My bad. I didn't realise this was an issue with Sager machines. You can just disable Enduro on the M17x R4.

If your budget can stretch or you can get a decent discount (call sales and haggle hard) then I'd recommend Alienware and the 7970m. If not, you could opt for a 660m/675m machine and save yourself some cash, but sacrifice performance. 680m isn't worth the $200+ increase.

You could always consider a small form factor desktop like the X51 or Falcon Northwest Tiki. The Tiki is more expensive but pretty badass, and both are the size of an Xbox 360 and much more portable than a full tower. The X51 is reasonably priced and fairly upgradable too.

Hey all. I'm looking into getting a laptop as a gift for my mother for work. Nothing too fancy, I was thinking something around $500.

Basically she will be using it for internet usage, microsoft office, making presentations at work, storing pictures, music, etc.

A US retailer please.

Thanks for any suggestions!

How do you think the 675m could handle Guild Wars 2? That's the only game in these next few months that I will play. Here's my plan:

1. Get the 9150 with the 675m and 16GB ram free upgrade.
2. Use that until Christmas or so, where I can upgrade to the hopefully cheaper 680m because Sager's can upgrade gpu's.
3. Profit?

not sure how its slimmer/lighter but the same power. Has to be a compromise somewhere. Removal of the optical drive gives htem another HDD slot, so battery must be tiny or CPU is an ULV?

660m handles it well

Performance in Guild Wars 2 should be pretty good but you might not be able to manage a solid 30fps @ 1080p ultra with a 675m. High should be no problem. It'll partly depend on the processor though as like WoW, Guild Wars 2 seems heavily CPU-bound.

In case you're interested, the 3610QM can't be overclocked, but the 3720QM and 3820QM can. The 3720QM has a multiplier of 4x so it'll overlock another 400MHz on top of its 300MHz advantage over the 3610QM. Not a concern for a lot of people at for most situations a 3610QM is more than sufficient, but if you are doing CPU intensive tasks, running VM's or just want a bit more future proofing it might me worth upgrading.

Damn I thought 675m was more powerful than that. Doesn't 7970m get like 50 fps on max GW2 settings? That's what I have read at least. Is the 7970m and 675m difference really that big? They are similar priced here...
