The Giant Bomb Quick Look Thread 2

I like what Guild wars is doing with skill systems, progression, and getting rid of the holy trinity but the story, quest structure, and combat isn't anything revolutionary from other MMOs.

I guess I'm the opposite when it comes to the holy trinity. Not being able to roll a healer is what is stopping me from diving into GW2.

Yeah, wow, I have actually found healing great in most big MMOs I've played. I have never actually played another role seriously so I guess they have to be terrible or identical across all of the big games, but Disc priest healing in WoW: Cataclysm at launch (when that spec was terrible and everything was really hard) was a great experience. People are idiots and suck, but there's no better way to tell them that than to point out that they were in fact standing in the fire and that my skills as a healer couldn't save them.

The closest class to a healer would probably be an engineer, you can drop health packs, throw healing grenades, and drop a healing turret.

Dude, dude. Pid looks absolutely amazing! A 2D action platformer not going for retro visuals, anyone know what the art style it's inspired from? Any art critics want to chime in on that? Cause the blocky style looks so CUTE.

Is it Jakob Tuchten behind the art?

Yeah having no holy trinity doesn't make everyone magically better at working together.

Sigh.

The real time events are cool but if you somehow miss most of them, you could end up seriously under leveled and be a bit frustrated.

Still digging the game. No monthly pay is amazing.

In my experience you have to actively avoid events for this to happen, since they pop up ALL the time.

Nope. I've been spending a lot of time wandering without events popping up for 10+ minutes and wished I had standard MMO quests to be doing while waiting for world events.

This might be true, but the other day we cleared a dungeon with 4 warriors and 1 engineer, it was just a matter of asking "so, who wants to come?" and we were all ready to go.

That is certainly something.

Pid looks really intriguing.

I'm hoping it's like Jeff was suggesting (these things could be more natural at the point in the actual game), since it looked like it could easily become frustrating. However, I think the mechanic was being used in a relatively varied way from the levels that it would make things more rewarding than frustrating to the point of wanting to quit.

It's okay, Brad. I have no patience in platforming games either. : (

Guild Wars original recipe had hybrid classes which created a lot of variety in what makes up tank, aoe, and healer. I played a fighter/ranger that was almost unkillable. It also had a great PvE set up and very little pointless wandering. I was hoping like Jeff that the new game would be closer to that. GW2 looks like a single player game that happens to have other people in it.

Jeff describing his playing style in borderlands 1 reminds me that he plays games in the most boring way possible.

Efficient, but boring. :P

Seems like just the standard preview most sites are getting though. Hoping for a proper one when the game is released.

Good god, the loading times, the pop-in, the constant frame-rate drops, the unability to hit ANYTHING with a gun and thus relying on the turret. Reminds me again not to play this game on 360.

Yeah, he seems to find the path of least resistance early on and sticks to that path until the end if it continues to work. He also seems to have very little desire to play anything cooperatively.

This is 100% true.

true. now i know why they never showed the console version before. looks like shit and runs like shit.

:(

There is nothing I want more than to get this on PC but my coop buddies only have 360s. It'll be a hard pill to swallow in this case.

This seems true from when you see him play and talk about FPS games. He always seems to go for the "assault class" style of playing and he doesn't seem to want to experiment with other weapons unless the game actively encourages him to do it.

How many times has he said that he finished a game using only weapons X and Y because it worked?

Yeah that's always been an issue I've had with how Jeff talks about games. Far too often he says "and you'll use X because there's no reason not to". How about cause variety is fun Jeff, how about that for a reason?

One of the dumbest examples I can think of is the smartphone HUD thing in 007 Bloodstone, which he constantly insisted you had to have on. All it did was show where to go and give a view of where enemies were. Fair enough use it a bunch in combat, but it's a linear as hell shooter there was no reason to have it on constantly, his insistence on using it was fucking bizarre.

These types of quick looks are always good for putting me to sleep, so I paused at about 10 minutes in and I'll continue later. Really, it has just as much to do with the game as it does the very straight presentation from Jeff and That Dude.

Am I alone in thinking the Borderlands games don't look so hot? I really don't like the art style. Yuck!

That was actually a pretty informative video compared to the other gameplay demos of Borderlands 2 because Jeff asked about mechanics which other sites did not ask about, probably because other guys didn't play the game as much as he did. Still, the guy playing didn't have an interesting personality/voice so yeah that made it kinda bleh.

I played this same demo at MLG Raleigh a few weeks back. It was fun, but holy hell am i glad i ordered the PC version. PS3 controls were absolute garbage. I couldn't hit a damn thing.

Game was fun though. I love the variation of the guns this time around. Borderlands 1 was a good game that too many people thought was GREAT. I think Borderlands 2 (PC version) could actually be great.

It's like...looking into a mirror. Although I like mixing things up with weapons when possible, but he plays exactly the way I do.

It may be boring, but it's not a wrong way to play. Having co-op is fun, sure, and I've done that with other games. But if the game can't stand great on it's own without it...

Nothing wrong with it, it's just the complete opposite of how I view weapons in first person shooters. To me, the weapons are there to provide variety and to experiment with. I don't think a game has to give me reasons for using every single one, they just need to be fun to use.

The EX Quick Looks can be really fun or really boring. Sadly the Borderlands 2 one was the latter. So much dead air. I wish Randy Pitchford would have been there.

Surely not because of other previews and having played the first game.

So you're able to review games without ever having played them simply by playing the game that came before it? That's amazing. Bravo. That sound you hear is everyone dismissing your opinion as stupid.

They just play ratchet 1.

:/

Kind of wanted to see the evolution (or lack of it) from game to game but whatever.

Also I just noticed I haven't bought a HD collection since the Ico collection And I haven't bought a HD version of a game I already played. I have kind of used these HD collections as a chance to replay games I haven't before. Anyone else kind of the same?

Are there any decent HD collections left other then the ZOE collection?

Final Fantasy XII HD would be the only thing left from the ps2 era I feel is left that I missed out on back then that I really want to play.

I guess The Jak and Daxter and Sly collections as well but I am mostly interested in them since I really liked Uncharted and Infamous and want to see what came before.

I wouldn't bother with the 'Collection', but Chaos Theory HD is incredible.

There's still quite a few HD Remasters I'd like to see. Can't wait for Okami.

It's all about who is doing the QL. The Gearbox dude they have doing it is just...boring. Honestly, he doesn't even sound excited about the game like Pitchford always does.

The 4 player Borderlands 1 ql was amazing. Hope it comes soon for 2.

Maybe they will do a TnT for it. Jeff loves him some Borderlands. I think the real QL will be the more informative one. The QL Ex seemed to just answer a few basic things that fans wanted to know, not really an in-depth jaunt through the game.
