Paradox, et al: Do not be alarmed. These are some of the things you are likely to see in the next 24 hours:

It's just longer, not wider?
True 4"
Stretched iPhone 4
Sorry Apple
First iPhone I haven't been excited about
What's new with it?
No LTE on Wind?
New connector? I'm heavily invested in clock radio docks. Won't be upgrading.
No NFC?
No wireless charging, no sale.
Stylus?
How much RAM?
No quad core?

If, for some reason, you become overwhelmed by drive-by trolls or "unbiased observers" feel free to quote this post. In rare cases, examining a poster's history may be necessary. Godspeed folks.

the common defense of Apple for the Foxconn atrocities that happened and are still happening is always the same, "but other companies do it also and they are worse"

sickening and brain dead logic

Uuuh, so you disagree with his assessment that if we were to put pressure on more than just Apple it might be more effective at bringing about a positive change for the Chinese laborers? Which I imagine is the goal of the outcries and not simply to deride Apple, right?

No, its sickening and brain dead to turn it into a fanboy wars topic

sickening and brain dead logic
I think we're at a good moment to change tech industry practices, channelling the changes that were put in place by Apple to other companies, and I think this is China Labor Watch's hope with their current Samsung campaign. To show companies that "not being Apple" is not a pass, they will be attacked as well. But if you call people "sickening and brain dead" for trying to push these changes on other companies and not just Apple, I don't know what to say. You're only making things worse by saying that people that think we should change other companies are "sickening and brain dead," and it partially reflects the lack of attention given to practices elsewhere, like at Samsung.

Anyway buhdeh, I call a truce. Just got back from Yoga/Tai Chi, this isn't worth it. I just really believe in people being sincere about the things they post, and although I don't think your individual justifications are relevant to the general trend of your consistent negativity and my overall point, we'll just agree to leave it at that. Anyway, everyone can rest easy, I don't plan to be here during, or after the keynote.

Dude, like I said before your long post. I was just asking you to chill out - perhaps in the wrong manner. No one's taking shots at Apple in this thread and I'm just saying you don't have to go on a crazy pre-emptive defense crusade when the thread has been pretty tame the whole time.

LTE is a HUGE update. Going from 3G to 4G is like night and day. Obscenely fast on Telstra here. Hopefully they'll update some of their plans accordingly. *uses quota in 5 minutes*

When you and the rest of the world are ready to pay 3-4x the price of smartphones and gadgets you use... then we can have meaningful discussion on the atrocities.

Hardly anyone wants to pay the $500-700 for a phone. How many will pay $400-500 on-contract?

I agree with this point, it's just that there is always this finger pointing "look look he does it too!!!"

let's be honest, Apple (and other companies like Samsung) do it to save cost, point blank. But if Apple, the most influential tech company on earth, set an example for once in its history and made the decision to make less money on products for the sake of human wellbeing, then other companies would follow. Instead of sitting on their hands waiting for someone else to lead the way, which no one will do because again, cutting cost>>>human life for these global corporations.

Uhhh...Apple has led efforts to improve the pay and working conditions for many, many workers at the factories they buy parts from. If all companies in China were to behave as Apple has we'd certainly be moving in a good direction.

I hope you're not using this as a justification for the abusive labor practices a majority of tech companies take part in.

Fuck my $200 galaxy nexus subsidy. If making things better/more humane for workers or moving business back to the US means a hike in price for a luxuray item, count me the fuck in.

One day those young upstarts like Dell and Microsoft will have some clout, darn it.

At least Copernicus is funny.

I'm not talking from a technologic standpoint, but a human labor view, you can slowly remove Apple's grip of your balls now, calm down

I'm done talking about this topic, no point talking about this with people who feel Apple can do no wrong

Motorola Nexus Made in the USA 2013 for $400, believe it.

Checking in, like I do for every Apple event thread.

Really not expecting many surprises on the iPhone front. Probably most of the well-worn rumors. Perhaps a few flourishes like panorama pictures (and perhaps that to make up for diminishing returns on camera improvement).

Think it's possible we'll see the iPhone line shaken up a bit. Would love to see the iPod classic killed off with a mega 128GB iPod Touch option to appease that market (of crazy people who think they need that :P ). Would also love an iPod Nano that's got WiFi (iTunes Match) and/or Bluetooth (Siri remote).

lol don't forget comments on the downfall of apple, how they lost their way, don't know what they're doing, falling behind, etc...

gotta cover all the bases.

Of course they do more. I've never denied that. But read the original post I am replying to. The whole point of my argument was to respond to "why is it always Apple that gets singled out". And I gave the reasons why.

They are the highest profile company. Almost a darling of US entrepreneurship. It both raises awareness to the issue (because of how popular Apple now is) and pushes Apple to lead the way towards dealing with it. They have more resources than anyone else to do so and I'd argue they have MORE influence than Samsung in terms of setting a standard across Chinese manufacturers and technology companies. They've certainly showed that they can do it on the product level.

Maybe it's just me but I expect a company to follow through with what they preach. You yourself argue that "it's no surprise" that Samsung treats their employees like crap. That's the sentiment I'm talking about. People almost expect that they're a shit "employer"(?). People don't expect the same from Apple.

To reiterate, I'm giving reasons WHY Apple gets targeted in these reports. And I also believe they SHOULD be the target because they're probably the one company (if any were to do this at all) to actually change things.

Also, sorry but I don't subscribe to threads, so if a thread goes past the first 3 pages in OT, I usually won't bother looking back.
Well, you can go back to the thread. I was addressing specific points that you made. You somehow think that Apple can do more because they have "more influence." The only things Apple can change is with their supply chain, they can't fix Samsung's supply chain, and that's evident with the current abuses in Samsung's China operations despite Apple's changes. Samsung and other manufacturers did not make any changes after Apple did, they did not join the FLA or open their factories up to independent auditors. They are not leading the way in changes to the industry--they are leading the way in changes to their own supply chain. Others are not following. And Samsung's supply chain in China is so large that they own at least 6 factories in China.

I said it's no surprise that people don't care about Samsung's practices. But I don't think we should expect anyone to be a crap employer.

It all comes down to whether you care about workers or whether you care about specific brands. If you care about the conditions for workers, you would push as many companies to adopt better practices as possible. If an activist group launches a campaign against a manufacturer, you'd take that opportunity to press for change. Even if Samsung doesn't care about its workers, it starts caring when facing a PR debacle. China Labor Watch is trying to create a PR debacle for Samsung, but it doesn't seem to be catching on with the public. If you only care about the brand, you only care about specific brands treating workers well.

Excusing horrible labor practices like forced underage student labor, requiring workers to pay to get hired, gender and age discrimination, forced and excessive overtime, because you "expect that they're a shit employer?" No, you shouldn't expect any employer to do so. Even if they have profit that is in the billions, but fewer billions than Apple.

And I just don't like the phrase "singled out." It literally means ignoring others, and I don't think they should be ignored.

I'm just really hoping for NFC. I left the iPhone camp a few months ago and have no intention of going back, but I recognize that putting NFC in the new iPhone will be a huge boon to mobile payments.

We should really play Apple Announcement Thread Bingo. Or perhaps a drinking game, based on the above.

The only thing that's really a bummer is that I'm a 4S owner... Not really in the market right now for a new phone. Kills the buzz.

It's not justification. It's just reality. While you may be ready to spend an additional 2-4x the cost... 99.9% of the world is not. Just look at the backlash the Google Nexus Q received for being priced at $299.99.

Until the world evolves and human beings actually fundamentally become more conscience of the world they live in... we'll get child labor abuse making $200/250 on-contract smartphones.

If they include the 4G hardware will it be backwards compatible or will the phone also have the 3G hardware?

There are a lot of towns that only have 3G and I dont want to be knocked all the way down to EDGE simply because there isn't a 4G tower

I don't think 4G/LTE even allows phone calls, so it has to be compatible with WCDMA/GSM.

Man, using the niche Nexus Q to prove your point?

In all honesty, I'm not sure HOW you'd put humanity to the test. When exactly can you tell when people are ready or not? Who makes the first move? Does someone start a petition to have prices increased to compensate? Do companies just come to an agreement, raise wages across the board and move product pricing accordingly? How would people past the test then?

Panoramic mode has been in the code for a long ass time now, so for them to not finally 'enable' it would be idiotic imo. I think the only reason they didn't do so already is because they've been saving it for iOS 6.

I can't fucking wait any longer.

I almost feel like using sleep as a time machine of sorts. A mess.

I'm not as psyched as I was for the '4' conference. Possibly because I'm not looking forward to locking myself into another contract, but also I don't see them implementing anything all that extraordinary this time around.

So long as we want *any* product at mass volume we are open to either things being built by cheap labor or being built by robots.

The Nexus Q is pretty much a bad example because it was produced at such small numbers that it would have been expensive due to low volume production.

Question:

What do you guys think is more enjoyable?

Being stuck in contracts so that each iPhone that you get will be a new "whole number" model or being stuck in contracts in which each new iPhone you get is an improved "S" model?

Just asking.

Easy there troll.

Troll? Seriously?

I own virtually every single Apple product other than the Mac Pro. I own significant amounts of Apple stock. I love Apple

My point was referring to the fact that Apple rolls

The iPhone is a relatively mature product at this point. We've seen a bunch of leaks this year and none of them point to a revolutionary change of course. This is playing out very similarly to the iPhone 4S reveal, suggesting that we shouldn't expect any unexpected changes (outside of subtle/hidden/software flourishes). They're iterating on fine touches on the iPhone at this point, because it's nearly perfect at what it currently does.

And that's unlikely to change until (or if) they hit the reset button on it (just like they did with, say, iMovie or the Retina MacBook Pro).

I'd say whole. More hype because, chances are, it's a brand new toy.

*shrug* widescreen allows for better, more natural viewing of wide panoramic pictures.
