Fuse (Insomniac's Overstrike) Trailer - March 2013 [Update: GTTV Episode]

yet the reaction to the first trailer was pretty lukewarm, as others have pointed out in this thread

People hate the brownish look now so much they'll look at any substitute as something better. I do remember the lukewarm response to Overstrike too as people felt it was missing 'something' but they couldn't tell what. But now they retroactively like it because they think the alternative is much worse. It's very weird sometimes.

I remember when Infamous came out everyone hated Cole's look because he was bald with a raspy voice and no unique features about him. Then they redesigned it for Infamous 2 gave him some unique features a different voice and people started to complain saying they got used to the old Cole they want bald Cole back the new one looks hipster bla bla. Then they changed it back to bald and people started raging about him looking generic. You already know how the internet can be.

But seriously, I will play this with friend. I mean, Insomniac has at least tendency to make alrighty games, not something that is GOTY quality, but they do create enjoyable games to some degree.

$5 bargain bin here we go

Let me guess the plot twist: the final boss has stolen all the personality in the game world as part of his evil plan. Smart way to get the player to feel real hatred against him.

Sorry to say but no, someone even gathered quotes from the old thread to post them here and you can see that most people loved the style of the old trailer.
Maybe the first trailer was received a little lukewarm because it was all CGI with no gameplay?

At least it did not receive the extreme negative reaction this one is getting. I understand you want to defend your game, but this is not how you do it.

Your characters are devoid now of any charisma, if you cant see whats wrong with them, you have a design problem. Or have been forced to change it and you cant talk about it, something that I would also understand.

Lukewarm is better than freezing cold. Or boiling hot (with anger).

No, but I think we will get used to it.

Heck, I even like it as it is right now because I think this will get some crazy price cut REAL FAST. I'm all for some cheapo-games with some quality into it.

is this coming out for PC too?

Looks like another generic shooter, I liked the first trailer because if had that tf2 vibe, maybe they could have toned down the care free attitude a bit when doing the missions etc, but I don't like what I'm seeing now

No PC version.

I've been defending the possible changes from the initial trailer to now, but I have to say after watching the new trailer I'm just going to stop. The environments and enemies seem to be missing the popping color of the Ratchet & Clank series and everything seems to be grey and orange and brown. I really miss the unique designs of the characters. I'm just not a fan of the new art design.

I understand what Insomniac was trying to do here, but I think in a gaming world where everything is co-op now, they should have stuck to their strengths and stood out. If they had stuck with the previous art style, I think they would have found a strong following in their user base. With this fairly generic style, nothing makes this game stand out from any other co-op game, and at the end of a generation it's basically a death sentence for this particular IP.

The reason Borderlands took off as a co-op shooter was because of the neat visual style and it brought something new to the table. Nothing in this trailer really made me need to buy this game over any other co-op game, as opposed to the first CG trailer where I immediately wanted to play it. Now, eh, I'm ambivalent.

The humor may still be there, the gameplay may be tight (I am excited by the LEAP mechanic), but I, personally, am superbly underwhelmed by the style change.

Watching the trailer for a second time with the sound off, and noticed two things:
1. Their expressionless faces while shooting are creepy.
2. FUSE logo reminds me a little too much of HAZE.

Not only does FUSE sound like a Codemasters racing game, the FUSE logo looks like the PURE logo. So basically, what I'm saying is, I keep thinking this game is a racing game.

I love co-op shooters, so I'll be keeping my eye on this, but so far it's really not setting my world on fire.

Yup!
Nope
Which reminds me I still need to beat Haze.

The Infamous change is essentially the same as what's happening here. The original Cole was bland, absolutely. So the devs tried to make him more exciting, but the new Cole was design-by-committee with tribal tattoos and now he's an extreme BMX biker! No one wants a Poochy redesign. The same thing happened here, whoever it was decided that the cartoony look was overstrikes weakness and copied what they assume gamers like: bland serious soldiers.

jstevenson, I hope this game sells great for you and everyone at Insomniac keeps their jobs. With that said, I think upper management needs to trust your artists and writers more. They had a vision originally for what Overstrike would be. Was the reception lukewarm? Maybe it was, I don't know I wasn't following E3 last year. Let's assume it was. So what? If you trust that your team knows what it's doing and can create an appealing product, maybe give them more than 1 chance before the committee comes in and completely alters their direction. The lukewarm reception may turn into a strong following when the audience becomes more aware of what your team is trying to accomplish.

I always wanted Brute Force 2

also, where are all these 'awesome' weapons they keep talking up? All I see is the shield that's been in Resistance already

Hmm, I don't think it's a fair comparison. I wasn't there when the thread for the first trailer was shown, but wathever the reaction was I think you can't expect gamers to go dancing naked in celebration for a CG trailer.
What I'm awkwardly trying to say (damn rusty english) is that if we could compare the newest trailer with both aesthetic, the result would be the same one we have here.
Obviously just my opinion.

Shield that has a "burst" fire that can rip enemies apart using the kinetic energy of bullets it stops.

Naya's weapon creates a black hole inside enemies that rips them apart. When it collapses it sends out a burst that damages / staggers other enemies.

Izzy's weapon crystallizes enemies, vaulting them higher off the ground for easy killing. Crystal shards that come in contact with other enemies will instantly crystallize them as well, making it perfect for crowd control. Very fun to crystallize a large group of enemies, and then Dalton kills them all in one blow with his shield burst.

Jacobs weapon fires bolts with mercury and fuse that immolates enemies after a few shots, and also pins them to surfaces on killshot. I also believe (could be wrong) that when enemies "melt" near enemies will also catch fire and melt if the splash hits them.

This look horrible, this thing seem even more soulless than the Resistance games. also it's too ugly.

Then again we know that Insomniac completely lost it this gen, as many said before Insomniac is a mere shell of its former self (of last gen).

The game is for sure going to be good but I think that Insomniac may be going to end up with this as a second Bizzare Creations. There are a million other shooter games on PS360 - so Insomniac, is there a real unique selling point? One which will convince 1M+ people to buy the game?

I have doubts. However, we will see how things turn out.

Changing the art style to fit the mature, serious story line seems unnecessary too. Name one coop experience where the story even mattered? Borderlands proved that isn't necessary in coop. Rather have interesting art than story in coop shooters. I'm too busy talking to friends to pay attention to the NPCs.

Before even seeing the gameplay, Insomniac gets some points from me for going on the BBLLSLLSLSLSLLLLive.

Points now subtracted for just showing the trailer and trying to convince us about it again. Boooo.

Why is there still no gameplay out there? Or am I just missing it?

Yet the reactions to this second trailer and gameplay footage are ten times worse than that of the first (and not just on GAF on the YT vid as well), as others have already pointed out.

Speaking of the old CG trailer, I think we should gave Blur Studio (who made the CG trailer)some credit for trying to add colors, soul and identity to this lackluster and soulless thing.

Much better work than what Isomniac has done, thats for sure.

Looks like Binary Domain.

That's not a compliment.

Without the character you mean, becuase one of the good things that Binary Domain had was the cheesy but really fun characters and story.

Yeah, the past is definitely being romanticized and exagerrated. I was surprised at how Overstrike was originally kind of ignored. The first couple of thread about the gsme barely made it past 2-3 pages of comments.

The problem with Sucker Punch was that they went way too far when changing Cole and still had the gall to say they are the same guy, which caused a lot of ire.

They went from one side of the spectrum to the other hoping people would suck it up.

As for this the first trailer had a interesting style and for some saw it as something different in a sea of the same stuff and also a interesting mixture of the Ratchet and Clank style and the resistance stuff. But hey go with what you guys think is best.

I found an early review summary on Eurogamer.

The debut Fuse trailer is finally out. It reveals a visually clean but unspectacular shooter, but one with great guns and abilities.

I've got reviews averaging 7.5 with an over of .5. Any takers?

If Insomniac wants to save this game from being a complete bomb in the March release, they should stop all marketing right now, bunker down and get a proper handling on what they do best, and re-adjust at the very least the art and tone of this game. Otherwise, this game will bomb itself back to the Stone-Age with the current reaction to everything released thus far, coupled with the fact that it's going up against Gears of War: Whatever, Dead Space 3, Army of 2 3, and so on.

I'm thinking the lower 80's at least. The EA Partners name alone will help IGN & Co. give this game around 9's all around, which should help making the Metacritic average a bit higher than the "disastrous" 70's.

Yes, I was only referring to the visuals of BD, not its story or characters.

.

EA didn't helped Alice: Madness Returns (which is actually a better game than all of Insomniac games of this generation) getting good reviews.

Reviewers mistook Alice: MR for an high-budget indie art project. Fuse's sleep-inducing art style and shootbang tone will make sure that the reviewers are aware of the EA brand on the box.

To some extent I am obviously joking. My point is that the shitfest that the review culture is will tend to intuitively love shootbangs from established developers with publisher backings (Insomniac + EA Partners), while they completely lack any standard brain functions when it comes to reviewing something they aren't used to (non-AAA titles)

Btw, Totobeni, check out Spicy Horse's next game.

Alice Madness returns better than tools of destruction, crack in time and RE1 and 3?

Da HELL...

I think they meant better than any of Insomniacs games this generation, not all of the games Insomniac have made this generation combined. Least I hope that's the case.

Very hard to get excited for these types of games now. The look, the atmosphere, the mechanics, the scenes... just meh. Lame really. That's not to say it can't eventually be a good game, but just looking at them, I fail to see anything special.

Year from now when gamers look back and wonder why there's so much(more) disdain toward shooters, I hope they remember that this is the generation that ruined a good genre.
