NBA 2k13 Demo Impressions

NBA 2K may as well be a single player only series because online is year-in, year-out terrible

Lucky for you sports games are extremely social games that can be enjoyed with all of your irl buddies.....don't see why this should be single player only when you have a wonderful 2 player mode that works like a charm.

Take advantage man.....take advantage.

Nobody wants to play 2K with me because they know I can just cheese my way to the rim everytime

meh..the league part is suspect..but i never really have that many issues playing regular head to head besides the little bit of extra latency

I played 2K12 online literally once but our League games in 2K11 sucked, then again viakado did have Yao

That was ps3 version of 2k11 if I remember right...?

If so the PS3 online play of 2k was inferior to the 360 (I had both copies....smh). It had more lag and was harder to play defense.

Speaking of defense I'm digging the new defensive controls just had a near shutout against somebody online 22-2 you can do a lot once you get used to it.

Demo was hard for me to judge since I played myplayer mode 99% of the time in 2k12.

Controlling more than one player feels weird for me. That's a personal issue though. The controls feel similar enough but I don't know if I'm loving the change to the analogue stick useage.

why dont they just fix the online mode? :( they should have enough money to do it. hopefully it works this time. gonna preorder the pc version soon.

After all these years 2K still doesn't let you change the camera in the demo....

ITS CALLED THE 2K CAM, do I look like I want to play with some shitty horizontal NBA Live perspective? Why do they do this every year. Frustrating.

Online indeed sucks every year but last year they rewrote the net code right (with disastrous results)? Perhaps it will actually work this year. Would put money on it being mostly non-functional though.

Full controls listed below. Separate the MEN from the BOYS! :

Wow controls have sure changed a lot since the last NBA game I played. Might have to pick this up that looks amazing.

not gonna lie 2k is harsh to new comers...once you get the hang of it though its fun

guess i have to live with that. bought the ps3 version in the last two years and online never worked either. at least the offline stuff is worth the money.

i would go with the pc version myself just for the mod support alone...and cheaper price..but i play too much online so i gotta go 360

No it has add'd latency. I can ball hard in SP but the added lag online makes it very hard for me to play D properly like I can do in SP.

well yeah there's latency like any other online sports game...really not that hard to adapt to it after a few games. then again my view may be skewed because 98% of my time was online and so i'm used to it...

did they bring back the online mode where you play 5 on 5 online? That had amazing potential with the right netcode. It was even fun with 2K's shit netcode on PS3. Does PC online even work? I have it and even when you do get a game it has all of the graphics settings on low. Add in the latency, and it's just horrible.

online is hit and miss so far, in my experience.

i've had some incredibly smooth games that were really just a hair bit different than offline in terms of latency. however, i've also had a handful of games that easily had 1.5-2 seconds of input delay.

not sure what to think...

if online associations work, i think i'm in.

No to all of your questions. Well online on PC works...but it really doesn't work

Yeah it's definitely hit or miss. Most of mine have been fairly smooth but I've had some of the ones you speak of too and I just immediately quit. I haven't been disconnected yet so that's good. Progress! btw where have you been......?! jail lol j/k

Also OA worked in 2k12...it was just stripped to hell when it came to commish options and made it not worth it to me.

Been playing 2k12 since it released and this seems like a huge improvement (besides graphics). The animations are amazing as usual. Good to see that alley oops aren't 100% FG anymore, had a player miss a bunch of alley oops with Wade and James. No more magnetic player interaction, at least from what I've played (Played the demo 10-15x today).

A bit too easy to get into the paint, as the OP pointed it out. The euro step is so freakin good but a bit too easy to pull off with elite athletes (I got into the paint with EASE using Westy). The controls are just so much more intuitive compared to 2k12, I love them. Also, the manual flop (Double tap B) makes me lol irl.

Edit: Played about 5 online matches and it was flawless (Can't say the same for 2k12)

yeah, if this is indicative of the online experience for the full title, it's definitely progress. the disconnects killed 2k12.

been around, don't post too much. almost got madden to try and get in the gaf league, but ended up passing. hoping that we're able to do an OA for 2k13 :)

i probably should have clarified my comments on OA. they definitely "worked" in nba 2k12; assuming that working means you can't customize anything, while being stuck in an auto advancing nightmare.

has 2k even mentioned anything about OA yet? i'm scared... but i hope they give us back slider adjustments and manual advancement. i'd love to play a multiple season OA assuming we can get it working to our own desires/needs.

Hot damn, yeah, seeing all the controls listed out like that makes me realize how complicated the controls have become. Thanks for posting. Been a bit lost with the iso moves.

You definitely get the feel for things after some time playing full games, though. Sort of interesting how they now have basically two entirely different control schemes for shooting that you can use (LT + Right stick or X & B + Left Stick).

Like I mentioned before, the speed, strength, and height of players actually factoring into the game is great. Westbrook will blow by slower defenders, Durant can shoot over the top of people, Lebron can post smaller dudes up, etc. Good stuff.

The elite players should be able to get into the paint.Try doing the same moves with Battier or Chalmers for example.

I haven't heard anything regarding OA. May not be a good sign. Then again I don't usually start following the game until the demo hits...which is now. So there have been something mentioned but I just haven't been paying attention.

Ill try the demo tonight. Smokey we gotta see what we can do to get a league going.

-Controls take a second to get used to. Look a few posts up for full manual.

-Players have more weight also takes some adjusting too especially when you play online.

Just saying in case you come back with "this SUCKS etc etc" after playing one quarter aka pheeniks (who aleady had his mind made up).

True, I'm also glad they are calling more fouls in this game. Can't wait to see how Rose does in the paint in this one.

I played 12 games online on the PS3 only had two that were unplayable/laggy. The other 10 were solid and enjoyable. So that is roughly 83% of the games were enjoyable/playable. My definition of enjoyable/playable may be different from others. I suck at the game :)

I think the weakside help is way to slow sometimes to come over and stop the ball. But overall I feel like the AI is better than last year. I hope they fixed the issue last year where your teammates would just stand around. That and inbound plays taking way to long to develope and leaving you in a time crunch to inbound the ball.

I am still concerned about steals, but at least it was toned down.

Are you able to invite friends to a multiplayer match? I just may try out the demo if that's the case.

I agree about the AI. Defensively still a little sluggish like you said, but worlds better offensively. Both the other team and your teammates. They actually cut to the basket, they post up, they won't walk in front of you when you're trying to run a play. Especially with the pick & roll, they actually space the floor. Players good at certain shots will gravitate towards them (like Battier camping out near the corner 3). It's pretty good overall.

Can't really speak to inbounds plays yet. Really wish they would give us playcalling in these demos.

Word. If the OA commish options aren't an absolute mess this year, I want in again!

I'm buying this game specifically for the online association. The my player and offline modes are just cake. A rl friend and I did an association last year with both of us starting out with all rookie/sophomore players and building our teams over the course of several season. We kept trades and whatnot realistic and despite it only being us 2 and the CPU we had a blast with it.

I barely play 2k or any sports game online. My friends usually come to my house or ill go to there house and we play. Sometimes I'll fire up online but majority of my games or offline at someone's house.

But anyway I really enjoyed the demo. Had to get use to holding l2 to shoot and the one guy screaming "wooooo!" Was annoying. But other then that its fine with me.

Those shot stick controls look fucked up... Holding LT just to be in shoot mode? LT & RT + Right Stick to dunk? Wtf?

What was wrong with the controls before?

You guys can just hold square to shoot I dunno why you think you have to hold L2 it's optional.

Anyways, tried the demo and pretty upset that it makes you play with horizontal camera. Also the animations seem really bad even compared to something like NBA Live 08 and why in the world are Battier, Westbrook, and Sefolosha looking like white doods?

Gameplay feels pretty sluggish and unintuitive as well. I miss NBA Live:(

Think i'm gonna pass.

There's like two simultaneous methods going on, it is a little weird. But all the listed controls together make it seem more complicated than it is.

You can dunk just by using right trigger (turbo) + X. And a jumpshot is just X.

The thing is that over the years i've gotten used to using right stick to shoot... I don't like using a button anymore.

Oh, my bad. Yeah, it takes some getting used to, though I kind of like having all the different shot types and layups use button presses. Feels more precise than using the stick.

That being said, I'm almost positive they've said you'll be able to use last year's control scheme. Could be wrong, though.

I know the feeling I can't get out the habit of using just the stick.

It will get easier though gonna play the demo as much as I can just to get into using the triggers.

I won't jump straight into myplayer now, I'll have a good shoot around with a similar player I hope to create.

I think they said you swap what the modifier does, as in if you press it down and use the right stick, it shoots, but then if you switch and press it down, it will now act as the move stick. So if you can't get passed using a modifier to shoot, you can swap it so you use the modifier to do stick moves, but not to shoot.

Is there any interest for an OA for PS3 owners? I would be interested :).

I agree. Offensively, the AI has improved quite a bit. I tend to run plays on offense a large percentage of the time because I am terrible at ISO motion/creating my own shot. So any improvement on the offensive AI is good news for me :)

EDIT: 2K streamed it's NYC launch event on their Twitch.tv channel. You can find it under the video section. I think there are one or two full games played of the retail version.

EDIT #2: On the 360 w/ Kinect you can use the voice command to change camera angles, call zone defense ( aka get 2K view in the demo ). :P

Hated the demo more than any other 2k before. WHY THE FUCK ARE WE CHANGING THE CONTROLS AGAIN? The controls were perfected in 2k11 and it seems like they are just fucking around with shit in order to sell it as a bulletpoint.

Visually the game reminds me of 2k7, Court spacing seems a little worse than I remember.

Mentioned this in the NBA thread - I'm at least able to connect effortlessly to games this year but the games which lagged didn't have the standard visual lag that I can adapt to--the game literally LOOKED like it was on a local connection--i.e no slowdown, very smooth animations, etc just like you'd expect in singleplayer except that there was a ridiculous controller delay that made it infinitely more unplayable than a standard laggy game of 2k. Hoping that was just the exception to the rule here, but given their track record...

Other than that IDK, couldn't really determine if defense is easier this year because I just can't play in broadcast view. Pick control seemed a little odd. Flopping is interesting, gotta wonder if certain players have more success using it.

Can't really judge it based on this demo since all 2k demos are trash but I'll gamefly this and if its good I'll just buy it.

2k demos never let you change the camera. Its ridiculous. I didnt realize more than a small minority of serious 2k players even used the horizontal camera.

And really? Animations of nba live 08?

According to dev posts on OS, flex scheduling & slider adjustment is in for online association.

dont play with me link please!!

Not a bad idea to gamefly it. How many games did you play btw? It is very annoying that they change the controls every year, especially to us who play for hundreds of hours. With the full game though there are usually a lot of tutorials and hands on drills that I do for a long time. I usually don't even play against the CPU most of my time is spent in the controls section until I feel comfortable and head online.

Agree on the graphics. Again this could just be a demo thing though. I actually thought court spacing was better.
