Resident Evil 6 - Review Thread | Activist Reviews and the Hate Patrol Destroy Truth™

I feel this is, like, the perfect summation of opinions regarding RE6. I've never been more fucking confused as to whether or not to get a game before in my life.

Here's my situation: I loved RE4, I enjoyed RE5 but only played through it once and felt it was comparably "meh".

Will I like RE6?
Screw it. I'll just rent it and see what I think.
This game (from what I'm reading in like 5 threads now) and the demo is not only John Cena, but

a clusterfuck mishmash of awesome/WTF?/sucks

Yeah, I may wait for a Black Friday Price Drop or for angry buyers to resell it on Amazon/GAF/eBay.

Re: the CVG review... I don't see how a review that ends with "Let's put it this way: we wouldn't buy it full price" warrants a score of 8. I'm sure CVG is deserving of the hate they get for breaking ethical codes and whatnot, but something is off with his review.

The "CVG hates women" linked on the original blogpost was great entertainment, too. Pictures of attractive females in revealing clothing somehow left you feeling violated? How is that a sane train of thought?

Where is that modern review scores chart when you need it.........

8 is like "game sux" territory these days....

Were you in the Uncharted 3 review thread when Eurogamer gave it an 8?

No. Was it filled with conspiracy nuts like this one?

Wow, the action in this video is pretty awesome.

I have a feeling the hate for this game is overblown.

It really is, you should check his channel, there are some good stuff there. This one is also great, and it has commentary:

He talks about things like how effective it is to aim for the shoulder (at least against zombie enemies), because it makes them turn around, allowing you to do a one hit kill finisher.

Maybe? Imagine a Resident Evil that's like a parody of every AAA western action game released in the last 5 years, but it's being totally earnest about it. Ideally you play it like a realistic Vanquish with less shooting and more suplexing, where every mistake results in a QTE, and the camera sucks, and it's co-op. Do you like the sound of that?

I think it's pretty damn good and yet kinda awful at the same time.

Does that help?

I don't have a clue what is going on here. Damn Twitter.

You have the writer of the review going full retard, the Senior Editor of CVG defending his actions, and the RPS dude calling out SrEd for bad form.

Here's a comment on the reviewer's blogpost:
Okay, let’s see if I’ve got this right.

1. You find CVG distasteful, but signed a contract allowing your work to be used in it for money anyway.

2. When that duly happened – something that was entirely your own responsibility – you slagged off some fellow journalists in public (while still, I’m certain, banking the cheque).

3. You got criticised (I know not whether justly or unjustly) in return by an editor acting in an unquestionably petty and unprofessional manner, but really no more so than you had. One-all on the “behaving like a bit of an arse” scoreboard, then.

4. You’ve then perpetuated the fallout by moaning about it here, calling people “dickbrains” and tacking on a gratuitous, pious and rather shabby accusation of misogyny – apparently believing it to be the same thing as sexism, which I can only put down to your having a grasp of the English language that I only wish was less common among games journalists in its dismaying inadequacy.

5. And for a final twist in this bravura display of lack of self-awareness, you add that the evil thing about booth-babe features is that they’re done for hits ie money, even though we’ve aready established that you’re happy to take money for work that can be used for exactly the same ends, namely generating hits for CVG.

That’s about the size of it, yeah?

If Dead Space 2 is a "full-on action game," then what is Gears of War? Or Vanquish?

Fine, maybe "full-on" was not the right modifier, but it was definitely an action game more than a survival horror game. You always had more than enough ammo, they threw enemies at you by the truckloads, you were expected to kill them all, there was minimal exploration, and it relied on Uncharted™ set pieces like that train sequence where you end up hanging upside down, or anytime you got sucked out into space and had to dodge objects while you flew headlong into another area. Dead Space 1 may have had survival-horror trappings, but DS2 definitely did not.

Sounds like a typical GAF debate.

More or less. The matter definitely should have been addressed in private and I can understand the guy's frustration being thrown under the bus, but calling everyone at CVG dickbrains and woman-haters is not the best way to go about things if you intend on having a healthy career. The guy doesn't seem to realize that he's quite disposable.

Survival Horror ain't what it used to be, and we can thank RE4 for that. Dead Space 1 AND 2 are about as close as we're going to get in these days. Dead Space 2 does have a lot of action ... compared to early RE and Silent Hill. It actually keeps to a pretty measured and deliberate pace and it does have a fair bit of exploration and puzzle solving, relatively speaking. It's not all monsters all the time. I've never bought into the "too much ammo and healing items" argument, because Silent Hill was always guilty of that yet nobody ever claimed it wasn't survival horror because of it.

In fairness to SH, you couldn't aim for crap since Harry Mason was just a regular guy. You needed more ammo since you could only hit targets medium distance away, and even that wasn't reliable. Also, the best tactic in the SH games was to run away, that's never been a recipe for prolonged success in the RE series.

Also SH wasn't survival horror as much as it was suspense horror. It was the sounds/static/sudden noises that scared you, not so much the creatures. The sudden squeak of a ghost baby, the crackling static of the radio, the clicking sounds of the "mantis-creature" in the sewers... and don't get me started on SH2.

Oddly enough, that Giant Bomb Quicklook actually convinced me to go out and grab a copy of the PS3 version (which is supposedly a bit better performance wise).

I’d have to say that my favourite part of the RE franchise (and MGS) is the fine art direction – particularly in the later entries. The earlier ones had fantastic static set pieces that I just loved sit and examine. The Quicklook and demo showed me enough to know that that quality is still in tact. This may seem like a weird reason to ignore valid issues about game-play, pacing and the game in general. The honest fact is I know I’ll enjoy myself despite all of that. Call me a sucker for great art but that’s the way it is.

Looking forward to giving this a roll tonight .

Speak for yourself, I've found SH's creatures to be the most disturbing due to their strange designs and animations. RE's baddies are just grotesque monsters things I want to kill rather than run away from.

I am completely dumbfounded at these reviews now that I am playing the game. I guess what I expect out of games and what they expect out of games are two completely different things.

I take it you're enjoying it greatly? I downloaded the demo last night for a taste and will give it a spin later on to experience for myself the awesome/awful.

Yeah. My impressions are in the main thread. Camera is a disaster, so I can totally see the hate coming from that as if it bothers the player it can totally effect the entire game. I can manage, enjoying everything else about it.

Camera is a little weird but my thoughts are the same as yours. Game is so varied, just having an awesome time.

Just refused my order from Newegg. This would have been the first game in like year which I paid nearly full price. Meh, will just wait especially with the fire sales I now expect.

There are just too many instances of hearing danger around every corner that may or may not exist in the series to me. Perhaps I should've said "more than the creatures", as the faceless nurses/skinless abominations are something to fear back in SH1. Stuff just got weirder as it went along but I ended my SH days after 3, not a big fan of The Room/Homecoming/Revelations/etc.

moving on...
No, you can thank RE0 for killing the old RE formula because of how bad it was. Let's get our blame right.

Difficulty suggestions? Started with Chris on Pro and got SMOKED in the demo area. Ive beaten all the prior games on their max difficulties, should I bump it down to Veteran or Normal?

EDIT: I'm in the wrong fucking thread!
