Cronos: The New Dawn | Review Thread

"Playable" on Steam deck, usual UE5 traversal stutter of course but at this point who is surprised

It can't be that bad in performance can it? Is there perhaps a setting in the high/ultra that is borked and kneecaps performances? Wouldn't be the first time.

How is that this AA-AAA studio managed to release 3 games in 4 years (The Medium in 2021, Silent Hill 2 in 2024 and Cronos in 2025) and other AAA studios sit 5 years on a sequel.
They have over 250 employees, probably have a minimum of two teams working concurrently on projects. Cronos started development after The Medium shipped. They seem organised at the very least.

The Medium was a AA game made prior to its 2021 release.

This is almost surely a reskin of Silent Hill 2, which is fine. Makes sense to make another TPS survival horror. Also, everyone says it's linear.

Pretty cool scores.

Except the great visuals in the trailers, the other mechanics always felt average. I was expecting something like 70 metascore, honestly. It's satisfying to see more than I expected. I'll start the game tonight.

You had good performance on a PC game locked to 60 FPS?

There are more potential problems in games than capped framerate.

Pretty sure most people would taks a 60 cap over your average ue5 stutter.

And how many gpu on the market can do more than 4k60 with an heavy ue5 title? 60 cap is probably a niche problem in this case.

Why would you trust what the reviews are saying. Haven't you learned the hard way to not take into account what reviews are saying?
I don't trust them (i haven't read a single one) but that still doesn't sound good since i REALLY disliked callisto, so even small similarities are gonna be a negative to me :lollipop_grinning_sweat:

Hopefully the similarities end with the graphical prowess and general atmosphere because they are both survival horrors.

I already paid for the game.

Callisto had some great ideas but in my opinion executed poorly. Cronos might be the one that does it better.

How the fuck this game got this score? Entire franchise is like 7.5 MAX. Boring, repetitive, woke etc.

Honestly there would be an argument if it was the same type of game. Like comparing Cronos to Callisto Protocol. Not Spider-Man since that's a different type of game and attracts a different audience.

Not sure what those ideas are but i hope cronos is 10x tikes the game that callisto was.

A clunky ass melee combat with zero challenge that doesn't even require timing or directional awareness, the monster changing mechanic that was a wet fart in the end (with some of the dullest enemy design)? The dull story that tried to pull a dead space with none of the charisma and world building?
They even tried to copy the clickers from tlou2 but at launch they were bugged so you had an entire 2 hours section of the game killing those enemies in stealth because you were untraceable...

if i have to praise the intentions alone, we should not speak negatively about almost any game in existence because devs probably had good ideas and intentions...

I'm not comparing them, just can't fucking believe those inflated scores. Sony + Big Marvel IP = success, even if the game is not even close to 9/10 quality.

I'll create the OT if everyone wants. Agent_4Seven Agent_4Seven claimed it but won't be able to make it until Sunday. Seems way too late for an OT.
Doesn't it mean if someone claimed the thread, then it's up to him / her to make it, unless he or she can't do it for whatever reason and then let everyone know about it? Is there strict rules about when OT should be created? As I've said, you can use Review thread for the time being - nobody had a problem with it before, it's not like it's the first time either. Have some patience, man.

Why claim a thread when you can't create it until 4-5 days after launch?

1) It's 3 days
2) Nobody claimed the thread before launch so I did
3) There's no strict rules when exactly OT should be created
4) Rules are rules, it's not like I'm doing it cuz I created them, I'm just following them

Why not create the thread now since you're available enough to defend your claim

Lol you know why, it's the wokest high profile AAA in existence except maybe veilguard.
Even veilguard scored a respectable 82.

You think journalists could score that one lower than the one where you are friend with the police?

Cmon.

I'm writing here now doesn't mean that I have time to work in PS and design everything, it's also ~22:00 here and I need to go to work tomorrow at 7:00.

What's with all this nonsense anyway? Where were you when solid release date was revealed for you to safely claim the OT? Nobody complained about using Review thread before ever. Impatience will get you nowhere.

Doesn't need to be a work of art. Don't claim threads if you can make them in a reasonable amount of time. The forum doesn't need to be held up because your own personal commitments.

Got Callisto Protocol day one and while i enjoyed the game. It wasn't worth the entry price. Based on reviews alone, if you can wait, might as well. It seems to be a divisive game in terms of gameplay. Some say is great. Others, not so much. I wish this had a demo.

There is only one rule I recall from years back, and that's not to create an OT earlier than a week prior to a games release.

I appreciate your OTs Agent but if Kacho wants to create an OT why not just work with him or just create the OT and update it over the weekend? It's never ideal using alternative threads to discuss impressions, because those threads are often derailed.

I dont care about 4k. I play everything at 1440p. 60 FPS is retarded and does not feel smooth unless Im playing with a controller and even then, I'd prefer over 100.

Sweet. Loving those headlines, overall better than I expected. But even if it were to land at low 7s - this is survival horror in 80s brutalist Polska, set in the city I used to work in... so that's an instant 9 due to guaranteed, endgless easter eggs nobody will ever notice unless you lived it. Just like it was in The Medium. I'M IN! ...just not sure when

Honestly, this is exactly why I'm very skeptical and cautious with this game. The medium sits somewhere around 75% average metascore. This is suspiciously close to chronos. And the medium was a horrible, horrible pile of dung.

The SH2 Remake was good, but they merely build on something extraordinary.

This game seems up my alley. I'm looking forward to it. Also reviews have been saying it's harder than a lot of the more popular survival horror games, so we'll see if that ends up being a good thing or making it tedious. But I love survival horror, I'm confident I'll really enjoy this.

I'll wait to see how it gets harder but it has a flow that more component players should be fine with especially if they want to save scum.

The game has healthy save points and each encounter has a checkpoint auto save prior.

Typically the game tries to fool you with one or two enemies coming out, and a variety more on the floor potentially there they could absorb. When a fight starts your initial reaction is to shoot bad guys, but there could be explosive tanks in the room. If you lead enemies to you then you could get out with only one bullet used. Or you could go drop a fire nearby when everything is grouped and it stuns the enemies while killing the ones in floor allowing you to maybe one shot shotgun destroy the standing enemies.

I'm also a hitch and will run back to save rooms to get my one free fire canister repeatedly here at the start. So far only one section had a back track but I wasn't risking these corpses being a shit show so I ran back and forth burning shit quickly.

If I had one complaint right now it's that the game does auto save noticeably before an encounter so you can't even get jump scared you know it's coming.

I'll wait, this is another "Callisto Protocol" situation. Already overflowing with games atm. I'm a sucker for these visuals/atmosphere (scifi space horror) so I'll get this someday when it's discounted heavily like Callisto was last week.
