The things people will go through in order to get a smoke.

I did mean good going forward after AGE...I think it's failure would serve as good motivation.

There are a few ways this can go after the failure of AGE. They can retreat to a familiar, sure hit to get them quick cash. Probably another SEED series. The other way it can go is they decide it's a sign they need to change things up and we get something off the wall like G Gundam.

In reality, I think the most likely scenario is we get both. We'll get something from SEED so they can make sure cash, while they experiment with something completely new.

You could make the same argument, albeit with different numbers, against every fictional representation of real world militaristic forces everywhere.

Well, asides from how that particular setup is linked to atrocities in a way most real-world military forces are not. The fascination for German stuff in a country that has had its own share of imperialistic ambitions (and continues to deny its crimes) does boggle my cahooters.

Sorry, I was making a Giantbomb reference there. lol

And honestly, I find apolitical depictions of war really weird now in any context. Just Nazi stuff is even more troubling.

I find it encouraging? (or at least amusing) that they don't do animes about how great Japan was in WW2 and how they crushed the Chinese and Koreans anyway. Nazism probably doesn't have the same connotations over there as it does over here.

I think wonzo mentioned it, and countdown.mandragon.info now lists the 14th episode, so it must be true.

Yeah, if we ever see the ending it will probably be in a year or so.

Well, at least we'll get to see it before Hyouge Mono!

But are your jimmies rustled or unrustled?

So what do you guys think of Hetalia?

I know some people find it impossible to divorce imagery or reference to something from its historical/real context. This is related to something that icarus brought up in the manga thread a little while ago in connection with portrayals of sexual assault in entertainment and whether it is ever valid (we agreed it could be). While I don't think the use of German imagery here goes beyond "it looks cool and we have lots of data on it for the military otaku", I can kind of understand where firehawk's coming from even if I don't particularly agree myself.

I have no idea how Germany's role in WW2 is perceived in Japan these days. It may be facile of me to suggest that perhaps German militaristic imagery doesn't carry anything like the same connotations to the target audience of a show like Girls und Panzer as it does to "us", and this could be a total non-issue in Japan.

While it's not WW2, did you watch Senkou no Night Raid? I remember it being controversial because of it covering the Manchurian Incident, but alas I thought the first episode was rather dull so never saw it through to that point.

I watched the first episode. It had this giant disclaimer that it was not about real history or whatever.

But it was odd as fuck watching some super powered Japanese dudes fuck shit up in China, for sure. lol

I take it you haven't seen The Cockpit?

As a show? Some boring fujoshit that I've never watched.

Probably as harmless as Tank Girls, but I can see why some people would be bothered. I'm just saying (in replying to your earlier post) that the imagery of the German military is inextricably linked to the horrors of that period moreso than most military forces.

TV toon skein

Oh yeah, I just noticed this. Fuck you Variety. Fuck you. lol

I take it you haven't seen The Cockpit?
I feel like I must have, because it was airplane porn, but since I don't remember anything about it I probably didn't.

There's also that anime about a modern Japanese warship travelling back to WW2 which SOUNDS like an interesting idea, but I have no idea how they handle it.

It's easy if it was about an American ship travelling back in time to help the Americans defeat the Germans or whatever. But the idea of someone on the losing side going back in time and being asked to keep the timeline safe is a much more interesting concept. I have no idea if that's how that show works out though.

Girls Und Panzer

First, I weep for Yoshida. You gotta eat, but this is basically the writing equivalent of prostitution. I assume she's not as soulless as Okada-bot anyway.

Second, is it me, or is the apolitical nature of the show just weird? In the same way that Leigh Alexander saying German uniforms are sexy or how every video game set in WW2 ignores the Holocaust, but taking something that's so iconic and associated with perhaps one of the greatest evils ever in the history of humanity and making it a toy for moe girls to play with is just... I dunno.

What does erotic animation writing count as then?

It'd be as if they made a show where moe girls pretended to be Confederate soldiers because... I dunno, some guy decided to write a manga about the American Civil War.

I also think re-enactments are kind of crazy too, because what kind of person do you have to be to want to dress up as a Nazi and fight Allied soldiers (or a Confederate who fights Union soldiers)?

(Of course, I'm the weirdo that refuses to watch Mad Men because apparently racism doesn't exist in that version of the American '50s, so it's probably just me. lol)

But the South gets glorified a lot.

CG dancing everywhere. Narag's dream show. This is the story of a girl who discards her fanciful, pie-in-the-sky dreams of making bentos for a living for the much more grounded and realistic aspiration of being Japan's #1 idol. To achieve these aims, she and her best friend decide to attend STARLIGHT ACADEMY, that venerable institution of higher idol learning so vital to perpetuating Japan's culture and furthering every little girl's dream of someday briefly making a life of singing hollow electronic songs in front of crowds of desperate creepers whose dicks throb at the mere thought of your dead-eyed corporate-tailored facade of purity.

STARLIGHT ACADEMY just to happens to employ the AIKATSU SYSTEM, some manner of pink-sparkled devilry that utilizes cards in the management of every aspect of an idol's performance from the clothes she wears to special "charm appeals". Hoshimiya Ichigo and her friend Aoi both ace their idol auditions and gain acceptance to STARLIGHT ACADEMY, but the real challenge begins here. Will their friendship survive the cutthroat competition to become the #1 idol in Japan? What challenges inherent in the AIKATSU SYSTEM await them? Will Ultimadrago survive even a single episode of this?

Girls and Panzer 1

Why is the main character always worse than the side characters? if the MC hadn't been such a spineless wimp and ruined all the efforts her friends had made, this might have been vaguely interesting. How stupid do you have to be to think "Oh, my friends are trying so hard to keep me from doing X, I'm so happy about their efforts I'll do X and put all their efforts to waste" Unless something changes there, I doubt I'll be sticking with this for long.

I was watching the first scene with a sort of fascinated horror at seeing all the subpar CG and general bizarreness. They totally should have gone with an artstyle similar to Valkyria Chronicles, it would've looked really cool. The final shot was nice, I'll give this the benefit of applying the 3 episode rule to it, and not dropping it right away.

I think half-glasses wins the award for "worst character design of the season" so far. Which is funny, because I like half the designs here, and hate the other half.

It sounds wonderful, sign me up!

This is some seriously blatant female wish-fulfillment. Sakura's beautiful, popular, athletic, has excellent grades, and she gets to date a cool, mysterious, superpowered bishie?

I'll summarise the salient plot points:

It's about a Japanese fighter pilot during WWII. In this version of history Japan invents the atomic bomb first but won't use it because only a 'devil' would use such a weapon. Our hero heroically kills himself to destroy the bomb before it can be used for any ill purposes.

Wait... how do they ever get serious with that premise? Does a strange man pull their triggers in the wrong way? Look down the barrel? The government takes away the girls?

It gets pretty silly.

The girls shoot up walls, signs, etc and it is permanent. The teacher gets fatally wounded at one point, but regenerates because it is humans that kill each other, not guns.

Wow. See, on the one hand I can appreciate the anti-atom bomb sentiment and the very thinly veiled allegory. On the other hand, it ignores all the other history related to the war.

The idea that the Japanese wouldn't use such a weapon is ludicrous, to say the least.
