I still adore the OG iPad formfactor for watching video, especially when you're in bed. Don't think a 7 inch tablet is as good for that.

I don't get the big deal about retina, but I guess apple made that particular bed for themselves..

And I don't think the ipad2 is much lower res than kindle fire HD?

Does that mean i should wait before i get the iPhone 5 now?

Me, too.

I just use my iPad 2 for websurfing and a few astronomy apps. iPad gaming has long since lost its luster for me.

Might give the 2 to my Dad and pick up one of these.

I'd say larger size and retina is more useful for browsing. I'd keep the 3.

What do we think about naming? iPad mini? iPad air due to thinness?

I bought an ATV3 today for AirPlay streaming. Works okay for international programming/app I have on my mom's iPad 2. Her and my mom can watch their news channel on TV now instead of the iPad.

3 things I expect at the show...

1) iPad mini
2) Retina smaller macbook pro
3) Pushing of the iTunes as available now

No.

Different markets are very different.

iPad mini + stuff like Angry Birds Star Wars and the like is a lot more appealing to todays kids than Nintendo systems, it's just how things are now. You'll see a lot more kids wanting this for christmas than something like the Wii U.

True,disposable income is limited.

I'm hanging on to my 3rd gen iPad. There will be a clear use case between the two and the full size will remain the premium option with its retina and extra real estate.

I think iTunes 11 will launch following the event, or the week after when products are hitting shelves.

I have a little girl and she and her friends don't give a crap about Nintendo. They either covet an iDevice or cherish the one they have. With that said, they're not married to brands. The Kindle Fire at 199 is an infinitely better value to them than iPad 2 or 3. They just want a content delivery mechanism. The 3DS isn't even in the discussion, whereas before the DS was. Most wanted gifts I see among them are small tablets, iPod Touch 5th gen, and Paperwhite. Wii U isn't even in their conversation at this point despite me showing them footage of it. Mario doesnt mean anything to them. How times change.

they must not be playing games then, because all the games are on iOS (as far as tablets go).

speaking of tablet stuff for children, whatever happened to the animated/interactive books scene? did it continue to grow or fade out?

edit: books like this -

Yeah, I don't think this is a Apple thing necessarily but more of a tablet thing (including iPod touch). It has really impacted what kids want in terms of electronic devices.

There's no shortage of games on the Fire. Games aren't what they use these for most of the time. It's communicating with each other, reading books, watching Netflix/AmazonPrimeVideo etc. The Fire offers my daughter more than the iPad can (lending library from Kindle, Amazon Prime etc). But size and price were huge factors.

Very eager for iMac/13" rMBP details.

I'll be buying one or the other so it'll be nice to finally have some spec and pricing info.

you know the ipad mini I see happening (same with Imacs/mac minis), but I think it is to early for the 13in MBPr. Haswell is not out yet and the hd4000 cannot handle retina resolution very well. So unless they put a dedicated graphics card in the 13in I do not see the 13in pro happening just yet. Maybe when haswell is released, but not right now.

Yeah, this much is true. But the Retina 15" MBP has some UI slowdown issues too. It seems like something Apple's pushing out before the tech is truly ready (hence still offering the vanilla MBP for now).

I think they'll put it out but keep the standard non-Retina MBPs around until Haswell or later.

A part of me dies inside knowing that it will sell a lot, regardless of wtf it is.

Why? Even the most anti-Apple guy out there would be hard pressed to deny the iPad product line is pretty damn solid. There is a reason you see a lot of loyal Android phone users going iPad when they get a tablet.

iPad 3: 264 PPI
Nook HD+: 256 PPI
Kindle Fire HD 8.9: 254 PPI
Nook HD: 243 PPI
Nexus 7: 216 PPI
Kindle Fire HD: 216 PPI
Kobo Arc: 216 PPI
iPad Mini (speculative) : 164 PPI
Kindle Fire : 160 PPI
Nook Tablet : 160 PPI

It would be about a hair better than a Kindle Fire.

The Kindle Fire and Nook Tablet are at 169PPI so the iPad mini would be at the bottom of that list at 163PPI

8/32/64 would kind of make sense.

I'm thinking 8/16/32

Although a 64GB iPad mini at $449 would have me seriously reconsidering the 64GB iPod touch I have on pre-order. I don't know. I'll have to see one in person...even though the 5th gen iPod touch is a 4 inch screen, it has 326PPI. Just don't know if I could go with a 163PPI screen for reading. Gaming? Sure. Video? Sure...but email and web browsing...just don't think I could handle the fuzziness.

I go back and forth. The larger screen is definitely more 'watchable', but the smaller screen is more portable. Hard to really decide which one I like more since I have so many different factors and I'll want to swap between them all depending on what I'm doing.

The kids definitely love the larger factor for watching Netflix and playing games though.

not sure what i'd want an ipad mini for above a full-size ipad. apple may need it to compete with the other tablets on the market, but personally I want the real deal unless it introduces some killer new feature(s).

What's wrong with the current iMacs? Specs still seem pretty good.

They are good but I'm holding out for Ivy Bridge and USB 3 which is likely considering what the MacBook Pro Retina has. Also, it may have a new design that includes Flash Storage standard, again like the Retina. I doubt it will have a desktop Retina display, which honestly, I hope it doesn't.

Well with the new models I expect to see USB 3, better processor, GPU, and maybe a thinner design. Do not expect to see retina models for at least another 2-3 years. I doubt they would go all flash as a 500gb SSD is still around 400-500 dollars. I know I wouldn't want an imac with only 128-256 gb SSD in it.

Well the 15in MBPr can handle the retina only due to having a dedicated GPU, but when you only have the hd4000 active it lags really bad. I just do not see even apple putting out a retina 13in when people will be really disappointed that they did not wait until haswell.

My guess is that the iMac will get a bit of attention.
It's Steve's baby. And now they made it thinner dropshape, glueing the glass on the body.
I'm betting it will look crazy awesome. But i'm hoping it will have some nice performance too.....
Kinda sceptical about that point.

I don't think or hope it will have retina but i do think it will be a better screen than before (fuck glossy). No more optical drive.
