Are you sure you will lose your files? Normally when you perform an upgrade to a different version of OS (certainly with past windows) it places the files in windows.old

It's still not ideal because you have to reinstall programs but at least the docs/files can be copied back.

Can anyone clarify if what I described happens when upgrading to windows 8?
 
Just installed: my god this is bad. I mean the Start screen looks great, but this is an awkward mash-up of two completely different paradigms. There's two Control Panels now...? Two versions of Internet Explorer...? The backlash is going to be epic if this is widely adopted... I've used a billion different desktops over the years and I'm finding this incredibly confusing and unintuitive. I shudder to think how the general public will find it.

If they wanted to do the tiles, why didn't they just make them the desktop background? Metro-fy the bar and the bottom and you're set. That would have been great. This on the other hand is unbelievable.

Man I have been using computers basically since I was born, im a computer programmer and it literally took me a good 15 minutes to figure out how to associate my Flickr account to the Photo Metro app, and it still didnt work.

This is the process:

1. Click the tile
2. Try to find where you can change the setting of this app
3. Somehow figure out you need to press Win key + C to bring up a menu
4. Figure out that the "Settings" button is context sensitive and that clicking "settings" will open the settings of the open app instead of windows.
5. Press settings button, press setting text at top, click the little link that says options next to the Flickr title.

Instead of opening the Flickr website, it opens Hotmail in the IE 10 app????? Sign into live account and NOW I see the Flickr login page.

Do the whole thing, go back to the tile and it says "try again"

ugh... this is going to be problematic for the normal user.

Sounds like you just needed to know about the charms bar.

Felt the same way at first. Now I love it to death. Stick with it and learn the ins and outs.

Probably my biggest problem with the OS is it's "two faced" nature. Been using it for about 3 weeks now and the more I use it the more i wish it was all one. I feel like we're going to have two of everything now, so I'm going to be confused how things play out with desktop/app versions of programs.

Also hate that theres a universal volume bar. xbox music is pretty useless/annoying with the desktop when I need to turn the sound down while wanting to keep the desktop sound up.

There is a new way to search for things. For instance, if you cant find the Control Panel, you can just search for it by typing Control Panel while on the start screen. It searches in real time. You can also use the Charm Bar. Win+C on the KB gets you a Search icon on the right hand side, you can use that, too.

Another way to get to the Control Panel is by right clicking the bottom left of your screen while in Desktop. Really deep in the corner. That will give you an option for it plus a bunch of other useful selections.

This. There is a learning curve, absolutely. When you get it the OS is fun and definitely usable. I hear there's going to be an awesome OT on GAF with a bunch of commonly asked questions in it. When it is posted and you get a chance you should read through it.

Aha! First time I have seen that screen with all the apps listed. Couldn't they have made it more easily discoverable?

If you right click while on the start screen there's going to be an icon on the bottom right that gets you to all of your apps. I'm assuming you just hadn't noticed it yet, it's even there when you right click on a Metro tile. The terminology of "apps" probably didn't get you thinking about your Control Panel, so I definitely get that.

While in the Metro environment, generally if you right click you get options for more. That's going to be something to learn with W8.

e: Are you using W8 pro or one of the previews?

Did you do any reading on how it worked it did you jump in blind and try to figure it out?

I installed Windows 8 on my girlfriend's computer a couple of weeks ago. She hates change and she's not super computer savvy. I showed her the basics, press the windows key to get to the start screen, this is how you close apps (although you shouldn't have to), this is how you get to your desktop etc. The biggest thing was get getting used to clicking the tile to get to the desktop and then how to find the start screen again. She got used to that after a few mins. Since then she's really had zero issues with the OS at all. She's installed a few apps but mostly she just uses the desktop like she did with Windows 7. Anecdotal I know but I thought I'd share.
 
So no mail client that uses (multiple) WINDOWS and can properly handle IMAP and Exchange? (Outlook IMAP = shit)

FU Microsoft for making me pay the Apple Tax...

Windows 8 = Home Premium
Windows 8 Pro = Professional
Windows 8 Enterprise = Enterprise

Ultimate was basically the consumer version of the enterprise version.

Media Center is DLC.

i'm sure there is something to fit your needs. Windows has over a billion customers, someone else has your problem and solved it. google it.

true. i'd still say there is something out there, a email client has a lot more potential customers than a rss reader.

Very few third party e-mail clients with Exchange support in the first place though. Believe it or not, many people seem to be content with checking their e-mail on a web browser *shivers* so there really isn't something that fits my needs outside of Apple Mail.

Used Windows 8 on my laptop with keyboard and mouse and it worked great. Got to try it at BestBuy today on a touch screen for the first time and it was even better. Very intuitive. Now I want a touch screen Windows 8 device.

On CNET they actively hate Windows 8 and they don't even hide it, in fact they like to show that they don't like it, it would be ok, but of every 5 criticisms on Win8, at least 3 are wrong, ignorant or just the point of view of someone who most likely used it for like 5 minutes

Zdnet is the worst. There is this man-child that writes about Linux, it's really entertaining to read his W8 hate blogs.
 
I'm buying that IEEE student membership tomorrow and then installing Windows 8 Pro via BootCamp when I get my DreamSpark premium login info. I've been messing around with Windows 8 since the Developer Preview and I really do like it. I've gotten used to the Start Screen and the charms. It does take a bit of time to get used to the changes but, a lot of them area really great.

I'm not surprised, as Unity is far worse than Metro. It takes 3 finicky clicks to get to any sort of application list, and you end up with a grid of icons with the worst information density I've ever seen on a desktop. Painfully tablet oriented.

I thought it was clever when i first thought of that, but now i'm a little shy i brought that out XD
