Voiced by Rosie Perez, too. Lol.
Fuck yes it should. Black people already have a princess. Now the white African people need one.

think they nailed it, imo

Ultimate Nick Fury is Samuel L. Jackson. He wasn't changed to a "stereotypical black guy". He was changed to a very specific black guy.Example Nick fury from marvel comics wasn't a stereotypical black guy when he was changed from being a white guy but yet people complained, your just not going to please everyone no matter what you do.
Prove it.
Weird that this thread has not devolved into a "post hot light-skin latinas" yet.
I'd be more interested in knowing the mom's background. Disney is taking a woman from Spain (lived in Galdiz?) and marrying her with a German (Birk from Freezenberg). Is Disney making a statement here?
It will be hilarious when Disney does go all out full feature film about a hispanic princess. Sombreros, tacos, and maracas everywhere.
Damn. I haven't seen Princess and the Frog yet, but Hispanics got the shaft for their one and only shot at Disney recognition. Looks horrible and they're all white. The mother looks Latino, but the dad and kids don't.

Femshep playing Cinderella though? :/
It's funny that you mention it because I actually looked up the Kenneth and Mamie Clark Doll experiment before posting and you're right: The majority of (African-American) children considered a white doll more beautiful than the same doll with brown skin and dark hair. It is indeed sad that children even at a young age already make a distinction based on skin colour. I wonder however if children with a Latino heritage would mind the looks of this Sofia and wouldn't be able to connect with her based solely on her appearance that is apparently considered too Caucasian or whatever. At that point it is safe to say that there's something wrong with society when people start arguing about this.Well it actually reflects in children what they consider beautiful. There's a well known study, you can google it where little girls are given barbies and asked which is the most beautiful, they keep picking the blonde blue-eyed white barbie despite their own racial heritage. It's kind of sad too, they don't consider all of the barbies beautiful but that specific one because they're inundated with imagery that leads them to that conclusion.
When filling out information about myself, on the self nationality identification, doesn't Latin/Hispanic get lump together though? It's easy for most people to not be able to differentiate between the two.

Can cartoon characters even have a "race"?
Someone tried to tell me I couldn't cosplay as Woody because he is White. I thought he was CG/Plastic.
Yup. I couldn't agree more. It's really sad. We simply need more diversity in media, be it movies, cartoons, games and commercials (commercials I've seen are pretty diverse though). If the world is using your product then it does make a difference and it does matter.Well it actually reflects in children what they consider beautiful. Oh she's Spanish? Well, this is how they look right?Wait...so she is based on being Spanish? Well fuck off then she looks fine for Spanish royalty and this has zero to do with latino. European royalty.
Moving onwards and away.

Ah. Disney needs to just come out and admit to the mistake the person made, then actually plan and develop a movie starring a latina princess.I think the reason this is a big deal is because someone at Disney said this Princess is a "Latina". That term is causing a backlash among latinos because of her complexion.

Case in point: Guillermo del Toro.
I wonder if her design is based on testing.
The fact that Guillermo del Toro's photo is quoted in a thread about Latina princesses is hilarious to me. But a good post since there are many Latinos/Hispanics with light hair eye complexion.
What is the difference between Latin and Hispanic?
Whiter skin is considered to be more attractive to people.

If that avatar is you, then I can tell right away you are some hispanic by your eyes.Even though I'm one of the whitest Hispanics you'll meet (to the point where people tell me I can't possibly be Hispanic and other shitty things erasing my identity), I do think it's more important for girls to be able to see a wider variety of what is considered beautiful and who's "important enough" to be a protagonist/princess. So while being pale doesn't make her any less Latina, this was definitely a missed opportunity and I would love to see a Hispanic princess for girls who rarely ever get to see someone who looks like them in this type of media.
Of course the real issue is that we're asking for one image to represent a group of very diverse people and the solution to that seems to be to acknowledge the fact and just make more characters. There's a bunch of European princesses so why does there have to be just one token representation of every other race or ethnicity?
Fixed.
to all people you mean and there's a reason for that.

Of course you wouldn't.Who gives a shit? Seriously.

I know I'm smooth as silk but I'm already taken, girl
I didn't want to say it. Its the truth though. Most of the black latinos I know don't considered themselves to be black even though they are. The white ones usually think of themselves as being white though.
I never said anything about the color. It's the shape. She just has that "look", but yeah, I do see what you mean. Yeah she could be middle eastern.Well, brown eyes and hair doesn't necessarily mean she's hispanic. She could have some middle-eastern in her. Anyways, she's definitely whiter than the stereotypical hispanic person lol
From that picture, if one had no information before hand, one can easily assume the adult female is new to the family and the show is about the kids dealing with a new mother. Disney has made new princesses before. Why would they do it this way is what I'm wondering. Why just a latina mother as well? No father or brother and sisters of the same background? Fantasy setting? *shakes head*

I always thought Jasmine from Aladdin was "Hispanic" Latina looking
when I was a kid....
just a thought

Best Latina princess will forever be the girl from El Dorado.
Yeah, my guess is Jamie Mitchell simply put his foot in his mouth, and referred to her as "Latina", when it appears the official Spokesperson had said that Sophia's mother was from a country with "Latin influence", which would be much of Southern Europe, in particular Spain. But I don't have all day to read all of Disney's press releases to find out what their goal with this character and background are.
That in itself is a symptom of stuff that's already been discussed in this thread, and honestly I feel like choosing this design just continues the cycle. Although of course it's hard to say without seeing the other designs. It'd be interesting if they released them. They probably focus tested and this is the one that people liked the most.
There's something terribly wrong with society when there are certain ethnic/racial qualifications for a new Disney princess

"Ok we've got an Asian, Middle-Eastern, Native American, African-American and a fair variety of Caucasian princesses. I feel like we're forgetting something."
Creating a character specifically for an ethnic group to relate to is only reachable with a fair share of stereotyping, which I consider to be a pretty bad thing when you think about it. Are children really asking for "their own" character instead of just dreaming to be a Snow White or a Sleeping Beauty? Or is it just that parents have noticed that they're underrepresented by Disney in the realm of fairy tales, all the while their children don't really care and just want to play and have fun.
