Been studying on it... I've never owned an iPad... I think I'm finally ready. 32GB wi-fi 4th gen ipad shall be mine.

I might have opted for the mini if it had the faster chip, but I'd rather just get the 4th gen and have the faster hardware that won't become dated as easily

i'm scared that it will be it'll be replaced again 6 months but at least i'll own one!

I'm sure there's going to be an iPad 4 next year so I'll be waiting for it. That said, I wonder if this "mid-year iPad spec bump" going to be a trend from now on or just a one-time thing to counter Microsoft's and Google's launches this year.

It suddenly stopped working?

This so much.... I remember people saying this about phones in the past, and I could barely find a soul that agreed with me. Glad to see people being rational though. A new version of a device you own does NOT invalidate your current device. It still works, it still does what it was promised to do when you bought it. I don't get this, we all know how fast things move in this market.

Nice.....so my iPad is obsolete within a few months.

I truly don't get reasoning like this. Do you only own an iPad so people can fawn over it because it's the latest model?
As far as I know it is still the exact same device it was this morning and there's no indication that software support is going to be dropping in any way.

Apple's release schedule for tablets/phones has so far guaranteed that you would have a whole year of being owning the best product out there, and at least two years of being close. I think that people underestimate how important that is.

Pretty much what I said earlier. You buy one with the idea it will be the latest tech for a year. I feel like a chump now.

Whatever comes out next year will be the fifth gen.

The meltdowns are funny. Speaking as someone who bought an iPad 3rd gen last month I'm not bothered by this upgrade as to me it's about the same as it getting a refresh in March. People not only are acting like their devices turned to shit but also like an extra 5 months would be a wild long ride with the new thing™. Haven't felt any sluggish performance with mine either so maybe I have one of those magical units.

The only real reason I can see for annoyance is if you do the resale thing, in that case a surprise update like this can damper that plan. I assume they did it to move the refresh to this season as it makes more sense for the holidays (unless they do another refresh come March, then I don't even know). Hopefully in the next revision they'll focus on battery and weight improvements.

Same :/

Just bought a refurb iPad 3 for my mother: 3rd Generation iPad discontinued, refurbished models available starting at $379 http://t.co/fE6kcve4 . That price is a steal.

Not sure why people are so upset ..

Look at Apple's other lines, cycles are some times short and long. It's normal.

Hard to look down at people when you are sporting last years (months lol) model purse (iPad).

Someone explain to me the iPad3 obsolete comments? What happened..

ipad of last march has an A5X in it, it's good but not brilliant as most of the power is used on the resolution of the device, the new ipad today now has an A6X in it so it's much beefier.

I just checked Amazon.... iPad 3 64GB LTE trade-in value is $660 like-new, not bad at all. Gotta be careful with the highest end iPad models, because the storage and cellular radio become irrelevant if paired to an outdated device. So I'm going to trade it in and get the 4th gen for that reason, minor hit.

Exactly, it's shit. I bought at launch and you expect at least a year of having the "latest and greatest". When was the last time apple refreshed a phone/tablet within a year?

Aren't all Android devices which don't get updated to the latest version of the OS after a year obsolete/outdated. What happens to those then? Do they suddenly stop working?

So how come no one is dicussing the fact that everyone was expecting the next ipad to be 16:9 ratio?

I thought that was the route they will be taking now, no?

Why drop your junk into the 7ish inch market except for competitive pressure?

Because there's a market for them. Always has been.

I don't think Apple jumped into the iPod Mini/Nano size market because they were afraid they were going to lose their marketshare; rather because they saw a good time to jump in and increase their marketshare.

I might be wrong on that...but I don't think the 7" (8") move is a very defensive one (which is what we're suggesting). Rather, I think they see a place they can expand to that can make their overall presence even bigger than it already is.

7" size is a popular size, and has only been partially tapped by Kindle/B&N and others. I would not be surprised to hear Apple has outsold all other 7" tablets released and sold to date COMBINED...by January 1. The fact that I can make that statement and people not really even bat an eye testifies to the pole position status Apple is in right now.

I believe only Win8 tablets can impact Apple's tablet market share. Even then, it'll be a couple of years.

So how come no one is dicussing the fact that everyone was expecting the next ipad to be 16:9 ratio?

first of all, who's expecting that?

secondly, this is a refresh; not the iPad 4.

Now that the iPad Mini's at roughly $329, that leaves me in a dilemma. I'm eligible for an upgrade through AT&T to the iPhone 5 (currently have an iPhone 4) for roughly $300, which I was originally going to go with. As a college student who owns a mid-2010 MacBook Pro and an iPhone 4, would it be worth it to get the iPad Mini or the iPhone 5?

I know this is a joke but can people even notice which version it is? Isn't this a iPhone 4 to 4S situation looks-wise? Anyone worried about having the latest one can just pretend it's the new model, it will be alright.

If iPad 4 is Apple switching the lifecyle of ipad to Q4, then I might be tempted to grab a 4th gen - hand down my 3rd gen to my kids and their iPad2 to my parents for Christmas

where is the trade-in section of their site? I'd like to find out what mine is worth.

it's just an internals refresh. they all look the same.

that appears to be what's happening, but we can't say definitively because...what do we know? It'd be nice if they put them on the same cycle, because it would synchronize them with their SoC updates.

If you're thinking about selling your 3rd generation iPad do it now. I was watching gazelle.com - they're offer on a 16 gb wifi model was $300 before the conference, now it's $215. buymytronics.com is still offering $294 so I just put in an order. I prefer the 7" size over a 10" tablet (had the Blackberry Playbook, HP Touchpad, and new iPad).

I'll probably wait for reviews on the Amazon 8.9" model, then decide between that and the Nexus. Most of my usage on a tablet is web browsing, facebook, Pulse newsreader, and Flipboard, so there's nothing exclusive on the iPad that I'm missing going with one of the other tablets.

Whatever comes out next year will be the fifth gen.

But what does it mean for the iPad cycle now? Is it on a 6 month cycle now or did they pull this "4th gen" out off the ass, to push the cycle back? The next iPad is going to be everything I want (same shell as the mini, laminated screen, better CPU), but I don't think I'll be able to pass on this refresh.

Ugh, I just realized that the new iMac is gonna be a problem for me.

It's got thunderbolt video in instead of mini displayport. My gaming PC has a miniDP output and I use my current iMac as a monitor.

Apple's thunderbolt displays do not work with miniDP input. they need thunderbolt

fuck.

unless they switched something up with this new iMac, I won't be able to use it as a monitor for my PC. Not sure what to do now. super bummed out about this potential mismatch. I might have to rethink my entire setup and use a non Apple 27" IPS monitor to keep the compatibility I need.

edit:

look for the lightning connector at the bottom

This "4th Generation iPad" announcement is confusing to me. We have grown accustomed to new iPads being released every April. So, is this really an iPad 4, or is it more of an iPad 3.5 and we should expect the true iPad 4 (or 5 or whatever) in April?

This is important to me because I have been holding out for the iPad 4, which I have been expecting to release in April, so I have no problem waiting until then -- if, indeed, a newer iPad comes out then. But if April comes and goes, and there is no new iPad, I'll be an unhappy camper that I missed out on iPad goodness from November - April.

Are you including tax?

I paid $651 total for my 32 Black Wifi iPad 3. Amazon is offering $475.

$176 difference there...

=(

After today, aren't we to believe that iPad is on a 6 month refresh like MacBooks have been. I highly doubt that Apple is going to have no big product event in the spring and leave iPhone and iPad to the fall.
