Apple's October 23 Event | We've got a little more to show you.

After today, aren't we to believe that iPad is on a 6 month refresh like MacBooks have been. I highly doubt that Apple is going to have no big product event in the spring and leave iPhone and iPad to the fall.

That's what it seems like, which is actually a much better model for a tablet. Sucks for people who want the latest tech everytime though.

Ugh, I just realized that the new iMac is gonna be a problem for me.

It's got thunderbolt video in instead of mini displayport. My gaming PC has a miniDP output and I use my current iMac as a monitor.

Apple's thunderbolt displays do not work with miniDP input. they need thunderbolt

fuck.

unless they switched something up with this new iMac, I won't be able to use it as a monitor for my PC. Not sure what to do now. super bummed out about this potential mismatch. I might have to rethink my entire setup and use a non Apple 27" IPS monitor to keep the compatibility I need.

Whoa, is this true? Really glad I'm finding out about this. I thought that they were interchangeable for video...

This "4th Generation iPad" announcement is confusing to me. We have grown accustomed to new iPads being released every April. So, is this really an iPad 4, or is it more of an iPad 3.5 and we should expect the true iPad 4 (or 5 or whatever) in April?

This is important to me because I have been holding out for the iPad 4, which I have been expecting to release in April, so I have no problem waiting until then -- if, indeed, a newer iPad comes out then. But if April comes and goes, and there is no new iPad, I'll be an unhappy camper that I missed out on iPad goodness from November - April.

Get one, and if a new one comes out sell it and buy the new one. You'll lose $60/80.

So basically the iPad 3.5 will have cost $10/15 a month.

I wouldn't be surprised if they stick to a yearly refresh and this was just the release to get them on that track. It's like the opposite of what they did with the 4s.

Made a huge mistake and decided to read comments on The Verge.

They need a downvote button...

Maybe ipad minis will update in April and the 10inch ipad will update every fall from now on.

I suggest if you are buying a mini to wait until April.

If iPad 4 is Apple switching the lifecyle of ipad to Q4, then I might be tempted to grab a 4th gen - hand down my 3rd gen to my kids and their iPad2 to my parents for Christmas
I'm toying with a similar idea as my dad is starting to feel like getting a tablet. I should probably wait until April to see what their actual plans are though, in case there's another model planned for soon enough that may make it lighter or whatever.

Oh snap. :lol

I don't know why this bothers me so much but I am disappointed that all the angles of the new iMac focus on the slim edge.

Show me a dead on side view, not a misleading bullshot.

Wow, great deal. UK is only £50 off..

Yeah. I hate Apple UK. They hike the prices up for no reason and then add our ridiculously high VAT on top of that, too. I really want to get a new Macbook but I'm holding out until I go to Asia in a few months time - it's crazy that it costs £250 less for the exact same piece of hardware if bought in a different country.

Because there's a market for them. Always has been.

I don't think Apple jumped into the iPod Mini/Nano size market because they were afraid they were going to lose their marketshare; rather because they saw a good time to jump in and increase their marketshare.

I might be wrong on that...but I don't think the 7" (8") move is a very defensive one (which is what we're suggesting). Rather, I think they see a place they can expand to that can make their overall presence even bigger than it already is.

I don't think they're defensive about losing market share, I think they're defensive about not owning all the markets they feel are worth owning. Whether they'll get that 90% share of the 7ish inch market with that price remains to be seen. It's going to be one of the best tests of Apple's mind share yet.

I don't think we'll see an iPad 5 in March...

Maybe I'm wrong, but I just can't see them basically going 11 months out of the year with almost no new product hype, people lining up for a new product, etc and then launch new iPhones and iPads within 5 weeks of each other every year. Maybe I'm wrong though.

It is definitely true for the thunderbolt display. I was just reading an old story on Ars and posts in the Apple forums about this.

so I'm not holding out hope that this is changed in this new iMac. I'll need to hold off on any preorder business because of this and see what compatibility limitations it has when it ships.

I'm a little puzzled as to why they felt the need to do a spec refresh just six months after the last iPad.

EDIT: Will Smith just pointed out that it's to get the iPad onto a holiday launch schedule, which makes sense I guess.

will smith is so sensible *swoon*

hmmm trade in my 64gb ipad 3 for $575?...

would be nice to have the same dock connector as my phone for charging. Not sure if it's worth the cost though.

did they really not change the ipad4 display at all?

the bgr rumor that had the correct upgraded camera also had an optically bonded ipad4 display

My wife and I were planning to replace her 2007 MBP next year but I'm starting to wonder if that's even an option now because she insists on having a built-in DVD drive.

Are we basically forced to buy a current MBP right now before they sell out?

I wonder if the lighting connector on the iPad 4 will make it charge faster? The charging time on the 3 is atrocious. Either way, I'm getting it for the faster wifi.

I'm sure there's going to be an iPad 4 next year so I'll be waiting for it. That said, I wonder if this "mid-year iPad spec bump" going to be a trend from now on or just a one-time thing to counter Microsoft's and Google's launches this year.

I was stunned to hear they did a a regular iPad update. To me, that means 3 scenarios are on the table:

1) It was a one-time chance to present a united front for the holidays. They get lightning on all of their products, kill 30pin, and let iPad Mini lead the way into Christmas. We still see a new iPads chassis mid next year.

I think this scenario is not very likely. If they really wanted to keep the iPad march schedule we would not have seen 4th gen today. Certainly Apple is taking advantage of the united front approach but I'm willing to believe that the March conference schedule is now dead.

2) They used the iPad mini in part as a way to buy time and stretch out next-gen iPad development. iPad chassis updates now occur every October instead.

If the only way to reduce weight and frame on the iPad is the battery, then it's likely they are stuck waiting on an A6X die shrink (lower power consumption -> less battery needed) which perhaps is not in the cards until late next year. So I think this is plausible, if only to reach iPad 2's weight/frame again.

3) The iPad has been transitioned to a product update schedule as with Macbook or iMac, meaning Chassis updates could be 2-3 years apart from now on and for most October conferences we can just expect spec updates.

This, on the other hand, is also very plausible. There isn't a big laundry list of changes for the iPad frame to make. It's too big for a glass-sandwich approach and the resolution isn't going to change anytime soon. It could slim down more and cut weight, but both of those are dependent on the battery. So it's entirely possible they take their sweet time with re-invisioning what the iPad looks like and we just can look forward to a series of spec bumps for the next few updates.

I agree, releasing both of the iPads and iPhone to close to each other seems like a bad idea. But I really can't imagine them going to a roughly 6 month cycle for iPad updates.

iPad chassis updates now occur every October instead.

I'm guessing this is now the case. Get the new consumer products available for the holidays.

I also think they wanted to rev the full-sized model to make the choice between it and the mini crystal clear.

If you don't want an external drive - yes.

Torn between keeping my iPad 3 and watching it devalue, selling it and buying a 4 or just selling it and getting a mini while I wait for the next iPad revision.

Keeping it on OS5 jailbroken for sure though.

They're still selling standard MBP, just not at 17" anymore. Standard 13/15s were still included in the slides during the presentation AFAIK.

Got the Shakes said:

That's a great point; would Apple actually just compress their conference schedule? I think at best march is no longer on the table; maybe midyear instead, but whether that's for iPhone or iPad is a great question.

Really... $2000 for a notebook with no dedicated GPU (running at 2560x1600 natively no less)... REALLY Apple??

I pity any poor sucker who buys this. That is ridiculous.

Sort of, there's no rush though as they haven't discontinued the current MBPs with the optical drive.

I'm definitely expecting a new iPad in the spring that fixes the thickness/weight of the 3rd/4th gen iPad and redesigns the chassis to be similar to the iPhone 5/iPad mini with the anodized coloured aluminum and chamfered edge.

That's good to know. She wants a 15" MBP with an internal DVD drive, so you're saying we could probably still wait until next summer?
